Career Growth: Heart To Heart Talk Between Collins And Kemi by qanda: 7:28am On May 18, 2018
Dear listen to me, “Kenneth and I got employed on the same day as Graduate trainee, within 5 years, he has been promoted 3 times and he is now a Manager”. Collins wore a dejected look as he shared his pain with Kemi, his wife. He continued, “He now earns N900,000 monthly; that’s about 5 times my salary!” Kemi interjected, “Dear, what do you think is responsible for this?” without a second thought, he retort, “He is of the same tribe with the Human Resource Manager and they are fond of each other”. Kemi consoled her husband, “I know how you feel dear. Let’s pray about it and go to bed, its 2:15AM”.

Kemi could hardly sleep afterwards, she felt concerned about her husbands depressed state. He had not been finishing his meals of late, even his favorite Pounded Yam and Egusi soup. The next day, while reflecting on how she can help Collins; she remembered sighting his Company policy and procedure booklet in the drawer by their bedside, she reached for it and read through the 35 paged document including Collins Job responsibilities and Key Performance Indicator (KPI).

Later that evening, she had the following conversation with Collins, “Dear, how was work? I read through your Company Policy document earlier today, have you read page 12? It reads ‘…Promotion to the Position of Assistant Manager requires a Master’s Degree in a relevant Course and a MBA required to qualify for the position of a Manager/Director’”. Collins looked on as if he had never read the document or maybe he forgot. Kemi asked if Kenneth met the requirements, he replied in the affirmative. In a firm and assuring voice, Kemi advised, “Darling, we have discovered the challenge, your lack of promotion in the last 5 years is not a witch hunt. How about you get enrolled for a Part time Master’s degree Programme?”

3 years later, Collins occupies an Assistant Manager position and has also enrolled for a MBA programme in one of the leading Business Schools. He counsels his subordinates to be intentional about their Career goals and Growth.

This account is fictional; however, it explains why many career persons are stuck on a particular job grade level. To grow and attract a better pay requires value addition in terms of attending Seminars and Workshops, Getting Certified in relevant areas, obtaining a Master’s degree or attending a Business School.
