yes o. lace front wig everyday. what really is she hiding? i'm sure her real hair (whether relaxed or natural) isn't that bad.
i mean once in a while is acceptable but every single time!! come on same with tyra. fakeness to the core lol

i don't think relaxed hair in itself is fake. but i do find a problem with the fact that probably over 95% of all blacks are relaxed or have relaxed their hair at some point in time. i don't like that relaxing is part of our culture and a rite of passage for black girls. even some as young as 2 yrs or younger.
Re: Natural Hair Pics by Sissy3(f): 5:02am On Aug 08, 2009
so being natural means you're the real deal? the real representation of what a "black" woman ought to be/look like? i cant laugh! and here i am thinking that whatever people chooses to do with themselves was all about personal choice and preference.

how about we start by removing race from the subject and defining natural?
to me, being natural is being free of superficial enhancements
something "not altered, treated or disguised"  (answers.com lol)
for example, you can't say make up is natural. it is clearly not.but it is not something generally bad either. enhancement is not bad
but it becomes bad when abused or we become dependent on it, wearing make up 24/7 to work to school at home etc everyday it becomes something disturbing and unattractive. same with wigs, weaves etc
relaxed hair has the same effect on the societal scale rather than on the individual. ie not in the quantity of time people use but rather in the quantity of people that use (almost all black women) it since it is more of a lasting procedure and meant to be a lasting procedure (ex permanent make up, hair dye, tatoos etc)

i'm glad you mentioned choice and preference. that is the individual level. if u go back to my post i said that i prefered solange to her fake sister. "prefer" being the key word.
the real representation of what a black woman ought to look like. hmm that's controversial. black people look different from person to person and people have different preferences for what they like as well. as long as each is true to herself then that's fine with me. natural or not.

relaxing one's hair doesnt signify self hate or 'un-naturalness' its simply an alternative way to sport the african hair
same as dyes and hair cuts
Re: Natural Hair Pics by Lita(f): 10:40am On Aug 09, 2009
@bluespice- natural means untouched, i have colour in my hair, so technically it isn't natural.  doesn't mean anything, its just a definition.  as for the self-hate question, unfortunately,  too often it is a factor. i know too many who don't feel feminine unless their hair/weave moves in the wind, is the opposite texture to what grows out of their head and falls on their shoulders. we've forgotten how to manage our hair, and we see it as unmanageable, as we use tools and methods that don't suit it (small toothed combs, pulled through the hair from root to tip etc). length has become some holy grail because we can't retain it due to bad practises and are addicted to a vast arsenal of products that don't help.  what nonsense when a naija hairdresser says she can't manage virgin hair? where's the variety in that?

Exactly. People who imply this get on my nerves and they're usually natural nazis who instead of making their own natural hair nice, they just rather whine about how other people do their hair. Then you also have the guys who yarn dust just to get into some girl's panties. Bunch of miserable tarts.

BTW Solange wears weaves. Beyonce wears lacefronts. There's no bloody difference expect lacefront is more expensive. Now she haved her head like its nice or something. No everyone can do the cueball cut. Save that for beauties like Amber Rose.

Quite a number of women with natural hair that use weaves. LFs and such to protect their natural hair from environmental factors. eg Oprah and many models/actresses. Instead of stylist constantly ruining their real hair with hotcombs and what not, they use the weaves as a protective style.

Amazing how ignorant these nazis are, just like to assume anyone who does such is self hating. Please get over yourselves and mind your business.

I agree with you Lita.

what nonsense when a naija hairdresser says she can't manage virgin hair? where's the variety in that?

esp. this is annoying. I have one trying to convince me to get a relaxer. thanks but no thanks, i'll do my hair myself if it comes to that. lol
Re: Natural Hair Pics by Lita(f): 6:19pm On Aug 09, 2009
extremists occur on both sides- look at those who are so angered by the sight of natural hair, on themselves or anyone else. i have heard people say 'we aren't slaves any more' as though we have been saved from our hair by dark and lovely. there are plenty who are belligerent in countering a natural supporter, acting as if they, in relaxing or weaving, are in a tiny minority. i for one never said everybody who relaxes or whatever is self hating.  i'm simply arguing against the idea that there are no people who relax out of some level of self hate. i would just like to see more variety.

Re: Natural Hair Pics by ThiefOfHearts(f): 9:02pm On Aug 09, 2009
My hair is 12 weeks post relaxer, I just got back from doing a wash and set and I was told numerous of times that I need a relaxer (Hispanic salon), I simply told them, no relaxer for me til mid Sept and they stopped. Anytime they see any kind of newgrowth, they expect the person to immediately relax.

However, I dont go around chanting that everyone is anti natural hair or whatever nonsense

as for Nigerian salons claiming they cant deal with virgin hair, why are you surprised? Majority dont even know how to use a relaxer(they actually relax your entire hair instead of just the new growth), not to talk of make nice styles for natural hair ie shingles, etc. Unless you want them to ruin your head, i suggest looking up styles yourself or looking for salons you've heard about that are good with natural styles that doesnt just stick to braiding.

and why is rants about relaxed hair even being bought up in a thread dedicated to pictures of Natural Hair Styles?

I live in NY and I've never seen this in my life. Been here over 20 years. what I do see is natural nazis claiming those with relaxed hair as "trying to be white". Infuriates me to no end.

@ TOH
if you don't think its a problem that a 'hairdresser' can't do hair, then we've reached a stalemate.  if i found an architect who couldn't draw, and had paid them good money, i would have something to say.  i also wouldn't appreciate my hairdresser pressuring me to do anything (as was mentioned in someone else's post), let alone something that wouldn't aid the condition of my hair, or that they couldn't even do properly.  (i have been to a hairdresser three times since i went natural seven years ago, so they have little effect on my life) it seems the only difference in opinion between you and me is that you're resigned to the situation, whereas i don't see why we shouldn't expect better.  i chimed in to a conversation that was already happening, so perhaps your fury isn't aimed totally at me, but i don't think i've read any 'chanting' that anyone is trying to be white.

the fact that something isn't within your experience doesn't make it untrue or invalid. i've never met a natural 'nazi' ('nazi', seriously?)- all the naturals i meet don't make a deal about it- doesn't lead to me declaring that you must be lying, or overblowing your experience.  i spent my whole adolescence in London, with people who had huge problems with natural hair (or at least certain natural hair), and when in Nigeria, or with people newly from Naija, i get looked at like i have three heads.

You are beginning to get on my nerves. I dont appreciate people putting words in my mouth. Just so you know from now on.

I never said it wasnt a problem, I said Im NOT SURPRISED. same people that cant even relax hair properly, the only thing they know to do with virgin hair is braiding. What part of "the person should try to research salons that are known for working with natural hair", dont you understand?

i chimed in to a conversation that was already happening, so perhaps your fury isn't aimed totally at me, but i don't think i've read any 'chanting' that anyone is trying to be white.

You are also way too paranoid. Did I mention your name when I wrote that? Cant a girl write general comments without people immediately assuming Im referring to them? If you didnt say anything of the kind, then obviously it wasnt directed to you? Abi?
Re: Natural Hair Pics by Lita(f): 3:10pm On Aug 10, 2009
@TOH
you have in the past declared that you 'hate people like Lita', so i didn't exactly pluck the idea from the air.  but glad to know there's no beef. in response to what you so lovingly reiterated about natural salons, as i said, i don't use salons and hairdressers.  i just think its a ridiculous state of affairs that anyone should have to search for one that specialises in 'nappy', unprocessed or whatever.  hopefully that'll change one day.

----
and for anyone whose nerves i'm not getting on (yet), there's one more naija natural link that might be helpful:   http://www.youtube.com/user/RusticBeauty .  admittedly, i haven't watched a lot of her vids, but she's gorgeous, and i like looking at pretty people  tongue
