The Federal Ministry of Water Resources on Friday, said that the National Water Resources Bill is consistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Land Use Act, and should not be politicised.

The ministry also urged Nigerians to disregard misleading allegations, which were evident from the various commentaries noticed from those opposing the Bill.

The Minister, Mr Suleiman Adamu, in a statement, noted that the Bill was not a new law; rather an amalgamation of Water Resources Laws that have been in existence as enshrined in LFN 2004.

He said reports in the media appeared to had neglected the provisions of the bill which was for the development, management and efficient use of the Nation’s water resources in line with global best practices.

The Minister further appealed to stakeholders and Nigerians, in general, to have faith in the bill as it was for the good of the nation.

“It is in the overall best interest of every citizen of the country that the process of its passage is not politicised.

“The general public is invited to note that this National Water Resources Bill when passed into Law, will better serve and provide for the enhancement of the Nigeria Water Sector in line with global best practices,” he said.

He said the attention of the ministry was drawn to the erroneous and distorted analysis of the National Water Resources Bill, which was currently before the Senate having already been passed by the House of Representatives.

He noted that the overall objective was geared towards efficient management of the Water Resources Sector for the economic development of Nigeria and the well-being of its citizens.

“These Laws are Water Resources Act, Cap W2 LFN 2004, the River Basin Development Authority Act, Cap R9 LFN 2004, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (Establishment) Act, Cap N1100A.LFN, 2004 and National Water Resources Institute Act, Cap N83 LFN 2004.

“These Laws are being re-enacted with necessary modifications in the new bill to actualise current global trends and best practices in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). “

He added that that the bill, drafted in 2006 had passed through series of consultations among stakeholders up to 2008, since which time it received no priority attention by successive administrations until now.

The bill provides for professional and efficient management of all surface and groundwater for the use of all people.

I wonder why people still believe this Govt!

Buhari a Fulani man, can never be allowed to control and take possession of southern waters.

This is another Gimmick by the Fulani's to control the water ways in the South.

We have more pressing issues in this country for FG to take care of, other than seeking control of everything.

Like water resource bill, like cattle colony bill, They are both systematically the same. The federal government will get to control water resources in my native territory, who controls the federal government? The North. Ordinary ogini cleanup you people cannot do, na to control water resources. Abegi, repair our federal roads first then we will take you seriously.

Restructure this country so we can all control what is ours

The FG already has too much on their table, including these won't make it any better for the FG and the nation.

At a time when the entire nation is calling for devolution of power from the center, FG shouldn't be bringing up these. Whatever the FG plans to do with the waters, the States can also do it and even better if the nation can be restructured.

This bill is unnecesary and should be opposed. It must not become law. Tell your senator and representative not to sign this bill. Hold them to democratic account should they do so.

If they don't sign it, it won't become law.

Buhari till 2023; Igbo Presidency in 2023.

In a time when sensible people are asking for more devolution, this Fulani federal government is looking for more oversight and control over more resources.

And the sad thing is that you can't trust this government or its motives.

This old man and his government is very far from the people.

How come the proposed law doesn't have any supporter from the southern senators?

Does it mean they too have not read it?

You people also said cattle colony/route has been in existence before.

It turns out you are trying to mop up people's ancestral land for cows. (You have not relented)

Water laws should be left the way they are without any modifications.

Don't modify anything.

Don't use your government to appropriate people's God's given resources for the sake of your tribe and ethnic group. It will backfire sooner or later.

If you want to relocate your business to another part of the country you can do so by obeying existing laws of the host states.

You cannot plan to relocate your people and relocate your laws to supplant the hosts communities just because you have power today.

You don't own Nigeria.

Please my Yoruba neighbours be wise oh!
As one Yoruba has already said, Yoruba Land is under siege!

It was not politicised.

It was regionalized.

The South opposed the bill, the North supports it

Why are the Fulanis in a hurry to take control of Nigerian waterways and rivers? This is clearly another agenda on the Islamization check list and we reject it ... Anything Buharis govt is interested in must be giving Fulanis the upper hand ...By ceding water ways to the Buhari govt do you know you have ceded the rights of all adjoining shorelines to the Buhari govt and in turn to Fulani herdsmen where the can set up water drinking routes for their cattles ... Nigerians wake
