Lagos State was NEVER the capital of Nigeria . This is a common school boy error.

Lagos City , a very small part of the state( less than 10 %) was the capital of Nigeria.

Just like there are several other cities in Nigeria that bear the names of their states so too with Lagos City

Kaduna
Ondo
Oyo
Bauchi
Sokoto
Bauchi etc


Lagos State was created in 1967, Before then and after then Nigeria's capital was Lagos city
to which parts of the Western Region were added to create the new state. Lagos State itself had its own capital and the FCT was Lagos City

What is Lagos City?

Look for the Old Supreme Court,Federal State House, Federal Secretariat and National Assembly.

Lagos City is Lagos Island, Ikoyi and Vctoria Island,Lagos Mainland( excluding all parts that were part of the Western Region) i.e Lagos Mainland up to Idi-Oro. LUTH compound is actually one of the old boundaries

Ikorodu,Epe,Ikeja and Badagry were never part of Lagos city or the FCT .
