President Muhammadu Buhari has formally made the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, Presidential election Grand Commander of the Federal Republic.

The conferment of the honour on the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola comes 25 years after the election, which is recognised as the freest in the country’s history.

It comes almost 20 years after Abiola died in detention after being jailed by military dictator General Sani Abacha for trying to claim his mandate.

This is a great day for democracy in Nigeria and I am happy to witness this historic event. Those that conspired to deny MKO his due honour in the past will watch today's event in shame. Justice can only be delayed, it cannot be denied forever.

MKO's place in history as the hero of Nigeria's democracy is sealed today. Generations yet to be born will continue to read about him every time June 12 democracy day is celebrated. This is an honour well deserved. Congratulations to the MKO Abiola family and everybody that fought for the actualisation of his June 12 mandate. Thanks also to PMB for this historic recognition.
