Hello everyone.

Please I need your advice. This is my first post on nairaland

I was interviewed for a job at a hotel and when it came to the "How much do you expect us to pay you?" question, I didn't know what to tell them.
Its a 5 star hotel and I will be overseeing their Information Technology Department. I will be in charge of their website, social media accounts, hotel management system and also be in charge of their software and hardware maintenance. They have two branches and I will be overseeing both of them.

I was thinking 200k but I don't know if it's too small or too much.

I need your advice guys.

I have to get back to them tomorrow.

Thank you.

You should have done your homework about how much the position pays before setting out for the interview. You would not want to shoot yourself in the foot by asking for too much or too less. Since its a 5 star hotel, I'm pretty sure they must have a salary standard for the position, just tell them they should pay based on the salary scale and make sure you psych them by saying you believe the payment will commensurate with your experience and the value you are bringing to the company.

However if they insist on a figure, give a range that you think will be hard for them to object to. Say for example you are thinking 200k, give a range of 180k - 220K.

I've always used that tactics if I cannot come up with the pay structure before any interview and so far it has worked well for me. It may do same for you.

Best of lucks..

Are there opportunities for growth or salary increase for you?
If yes, 180k or 200k is not bad to start. Ask your self other hard questions.

Good luck!

Since U said it's a 5-star hotel, I will advise U go with the 200k as u planned.

...I would also urge U to get a spy device (spy car key camera, spy pen camera, spy clothe button camera etc), U'll be needing either of those gadgets to enhance Ur professionalism cos ur duty will involve monitoring and I.T security alertness. U'll appreciate my exposure in the long run...

I think you should find a way to enquire from the staff of the company what the salary is like.
Cos if 200k is too much, they will feel they can't afford you, and you lose, and if you tell them 200k, and that is equivalent to what the receptionist receives, then you will shortchanging yourself

#200,000 is ideal as far as you will get enough time to move around for other businesses.

Btw, you should know your worth and that should be the determinant factor.

OK

N200,000K FOR JUST SMALL IT WORK ?

ARE YOU TRYING TO ROB A HUMANE COMPANY THAT MADE THE MISTAKE OF INVITING YOU FOR AN INTERVIEW

DID SOMEONE NOT EVEN BOTHER TO TELL YOU THAT IN TODAY' NIGERIA, THAT N200,000K CAN EMPLOY 5 PERSONS AT N40,000K EACH

DID YOU GIVE ANY GIRL BELLE AND DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR CASH ?

JUST GET BACK TO THEM AND THANK THEM FOR SAVING YOU FROM THE UNEMPLOYMENT MARKET OF NIGERIA.

THAT WAS WHAT I DID YEARS BACK, AND TODAY I AM THE CHIEF RECEPTIONIST OF MY COMPANY.

I ALONE CAN DECIDE WHO GETS INTO OUR COMPANY OR NOT.

AS THE CHIEF RECEPTIONIST OF MY COMPANY, A LOT OF PEOPLE ALWAYS bribe ME ON A DAILY BASIS.

EVEN THOUGH MY SALARY IS N75,000K PER MONTH, I MAKE BETWEEN N3M TO N3.7M PER MONTH.

IF YOU ARE SMART, THEN TAKE MY ADVICE.

The best way to answer them is to first ask for them to give you an offer (the amount they want to offer you) then you can now add to it as your request.

Size them up. Do you really think a hotel can pay that much??

If they are big enough then that 250k is just ideal considering all the listed job roles.

Good luck.

Jesus Christ look at how you're pricing yourself to oblivion. These are too much responsibilities for 200k, up it to 300k, give them list of responsibilities, economic surge and issues and tell them your experiences and more this is why they need you.

Quote jargons they don't know those technical jargons nor can verify, what you tell them is what they'll believe. How you sell yourself is how you will be priced. 200k self. See this guy, if i catch you by the tie ehn?

Also never rush to undermine yourself before any employer, tell them you're open for offers when asked how much you like to earn, answer the question with the responsibilities you will be providing the company, managing two branches means like working at two different stations, transport in between, ups and downs in between, you'll train other workers and impact some of your knowledge.

300k must be the minimum you present o. Don't come back and tell us story, i want to hear you come back and say you both agreed for 250k. Cause when you deduct expenses and forced transportation shuttling two branches will make you undertake, you'll know 200k is peanuts

Tell them all experienced Freelance ICT gurus earn 300k monthly from home, and very few free ones are very skilled, it's a fact. Don;t accept 200k for the work easily unless you have a written agreement for increment after a mutually agreed time

BY THE WAY I'M WELL INFORMED FIVE STAR HOTELS PAY 300K EVEN AT ENTRY LEVEL FOR NORMAL WORKERS LET ALONE ICT CHIEF

I CHANGE MY MOUTH, TELL THEM ANYWHERE BETWEEN 350 - 400K MONTHLY BECAUSE OF YOUR QUALITIES WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE, THE CONTRIBUTIONS YOU WILL MAKE TO THE ORGANIZATION, AND YOU'LL MAKE A NEW INNOVATION MONTHLY, BROS IF YOU LACK IDEAS FOR EACH NEW MONTH, THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE BROTHERS HERE. PLEASE 400K PER MONTH, IT'S A FIVE STAR HOTEL, MANY TIMES A ROOM IS CHARGED ALMOST TEN BILLION, THEY HAVE THE BAR. RAISE YOUR BAR. DRESS CUTE, GET A CLEAN SHAVE, WEAR A SUIT, JUMIA ONE FOR 15K WITH A NEW SHOE FROM LAMORE AND SMACK THESE GUYS BACK DOWN NWANNE

NWANNE TELL THEM ALL ICT GUYS HAVE A BACK ROOM SUPPORT TEAM TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND ADDENDUM EXPERTISE, EVEN IN CONSULTING AND MORE THAT FORM PART OF OUR BACKBONE, TELL THEM YOU HAVE SPECIALISED HANDS THAT CAN ATTEND TO THEIR NEEDS IN ANY FORM OF CRISIS ( NA LIE, NA WE HERE, WE WILL SUPPORT YOU, ON ANY KIND OF ICT PROBLEMS ) JUST TALK TALL PLEASE AND GET THIS JOB.

GOOD LUCK

The salary range for this position should be between 250k-300k.

Look at the job responsibilities;
1. Social Media/website Management
2. IT support
3. Database management
4. Network/Internet infrastructure
5. Software application

Don't under negotiate bro.

Tell your employer that for now that you're still doing promo your salary expectation will be 100k. Anything after the promo period, you'll not take anything less than N150k.

That looks like a lot of responsibilities for one person. Everything you just mentioned are usually given to a team/department, not one person. If you'll do it alone, then 200k is small, especially if you are still going to outsource some of the jobs.

Hope this helps

Be confident and approach the conversation understanding your worth and the goals/responsibilities expected of you.

Here are a few phrases that you can apply when attempting to negotiate your salary:

I'm flexible and open to discussing a reasonable compensation package, but my salary has been X amount - X amount recently."

"My salary expectation depends on factors we haven't discussed yet, like benefits and many intangibles, what range do you expect to bring someone in with?"

"Before I offer you my salary range, can you tell me more about the responsibilities and goals?"

Always negotiate, even if it's for an entry-level role.

Specifically, if you're an entry-level candidate, be mindful of your strategy, don't foolishly negotiate if you don't have any leverage in relation to experience, skillset, or competing offers.

Have a clear understanding of your worth, skillset, responsibilities, AND potential.

The relationship you have with your employer is a partnership. You should perceive it as you work WITH company XYZ.

Do not be afraid to negotiate.

Did you say " 5 star hotel"? 200k is small for that role. 300k is a good start. You will have access to lots of information and the successful operation of the hotel largely depend on you. You have a Lot to do and you also don't want to appear cheap, except you don't know your onions.

Given the job description and the expectations inherent in your field. I reckon 250k is not bad for a start. You underpriced yourself by quoting 200k.

In this present Nigerian economy, I don't think 200k can even sustain you given the nature of your job, where you have to be overseeing two structures. And of course, especially if you are in a location like Lagos.

I'd advice you plunge into further negotiations with them, For you to get such an offer means you have the requisite skill, so adding a additional 50k to your remuneration wouldn't be a big deal for them.

Cheers,

I have som1 in a 5 star hotel, F&B and he his on N120k now, though he his already 4yrs. I think quoting within N200 and N250k is okay for your job description, you're more of IT manager in charge of 2branches.
If you're paid less is slavery, when you start you'll realize you're doing more for less.
