How Nigerians Are Wasting Money On 4K Ultra HD TVs. by TechCapon(m): 8:01am On Jun 24, 2018 |
@TechCapon 4K UHD TVs are the best display TVs in the market but it's not for the Nigerian market! What am I even saying ? It's not even for the African market ! But we see this TVs in the showrooms and eventually in the homes of people, even some government office connect their CCTV cameras to 4K TVs so the security men can see what's really happening around the building. Funny, they just buy it without understanding the concept behind it. This post is for enlightenment purpose because people are fund of buying electronic gadgets without doing little research or at least seek the advice of an expert. They rather rely on the advice of salesmen/saleswomen who are just there for one reason, make profit ! It is a good thing to embrace new and better technology, but there’s a difference between embracing new technology and just wasting money. In this post I’m going to explain exactly why Nigerians are wasting money on one of such technologies. THE 4K ULTRA HIGH DEFINITION TV. First of all, what is 4K ? It's not a fancy name, 4K is actually a resolution (2160 X 3840). The highest video display resolution right now! To enjoy the power of true 4K UHD technology, you must have a high video resolution of 2160 X 3840 pixels to match with the 4K UHD TV, that's when you can say you're watching 4K TV. This display is a lot better than the usual HD and full HD displays and produces super-rich quality, life-like displays. Sorry to say this but a lot of Nigerians don’t understand how resolutions work. A lot of people who buy 4k UHD TVs have never watched 4k videos before. THE MAJOR PROBLEM IS, there are few 4K contents available. A 5 minute 4k video is about 2GB in size how much more a full movie of almost 2 hours. A lot of TV shows, movies and TV networks are not even available in 4K resolution ! Not even MTV, CNN, BEIN SPORTS, SUPER SPORTS, FOX NEWS, AFRICAN MAGIC, SOUNDCITY, NAT GEO WILD etc displays 4K UHD videos. They only display in HD. So what’s the point of splashing huge amount of cash on 4K UHD TV only to go home and watch the regular videos or cable TV channels. You’re not different from the guy who bought a much cheaper FULL HD TV because its same video resolutions and you can hardly notice the difference. Agreed it does upscale the video quality to some extent but it's still not 4K. TV stations around the world are not ready to embrace the 4K UHD technology yet! Unless you ready to stream 4K videos directly from NETFLIX or AMAZON PRIME at mind blowing data rates, you can hardly enjoy the 4K experience. Even if you have the cash to burn, which internet service provider in Nigeria can give you enough bandwidth to stream 4k movies non-stop on Netflix at 2160 X 3840 pixels everyday ? This is a secret no TV sales man will ever tell you. Buying such TV in Nigeria is like buying a Ferrari and driving it in a street full of potholes. You can hardly enjoy it ! Do you think Nigeria will be ready for the 4K TV technology in the next 5-10 years ? Tell us in the comment section SOURCE: http://techcapon.com/how-nigerians-are-wasting-money-on-4k-uhd-tvs/ 349 Likes 36 Shares |

Nigerians nor send this type of analysis, so long as it is expensive and fine they will buy. I remember walking into one of the Foauni stores and one of the attendants started marketing a Tv that cost "8 million naira" to me, even if i could afford it my ancestors will not be happy with me if i buy it......... 514 Likes 17 Shares |

Op going by your analysis, even buying HD TV is waste of money..... No local Nigerian station shoots and stream in HD. Even the almighty dstv has very few HD channels, unless you go premium. And that still is limited, most channels are on SD standard definition. 202 Likes 10 Shares |

Well said OP Unfortunately Nigerians are a breed of humans that don't care about analysis, insight or facts .they cheer mediocrity and superficially For now only Ps4 pro owners and xboxone x owners really utilize the 4k the in Nigeria, let's not forget pornhub also have 4k porn vidoes So unless you are using any of the above then you are not being intelligent by using a 4k tv .even in the states the PS4 pro didn't sell so well hence alot of people didn't upgrade to 4k , but in Nigeria where people can hadly feed well you see them running to get 4k TV's just to watch a N200 naira 480p DVD on it? I laugh so hard at Nigerians most times 253 Likes 11 Shares |

TechCapon:hopefully it doesn't take long for dstv to upgrade to 4k,but for now Netflix and youtube offer 4k content and most 4k TVs come with Netflix and youtube preinstalled.watched the last of us 2 e3 gameplay demo on my phone at 720p and on a 4k TV and the amount of extra detail was amazing.people with Xbox one x,ps4 pro and PCs with gtx 1070 and above will also be able to take advantage of it so 4k isn't a waste of money 43 Likes 2 Shares |

You are underestimating Nigerians. I use a 4K with Netflix and I’m not the only one. There are also lots of 4K videos on YouTube which I can stream from my YouTube app. The fact that you subscribe for 1gb does not mean everyone else does same. I was recently amazed at the number of Nigerians who have ditched dstv for Netflix, many who haven’t are limited by their TV’s capabilities. So, maybe you should look deeper, before casting ill thought aspersions. Buy the TV you can afford and move on, don't hate on people's TV even if they don't maximize on its capabilities, it is somewhat sadistic. 63 Likes 6 Shares |

TechCapon: Well.... I'm surprised you're bothered. Same people that'll buy iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy s10 without having an idea what the devices are capable of save for camera and name. Little do they know, if they knew little sef, that this iPhone X can deliver 4k video quality. Like you rightly analysed there, common 5min videos can consume over 1500MB of storage or streaming data. Where do we get such data in this archaic country? Except Elon Musk fast forward his global internet satellite service. 45 Likes 1 Share |

Lol op said exactly said what's on my mind when I tried educating my friend on why 4k tv is rubbish and only serves for i pass my neighbor mentality. The reason I switched to led tv from my lcd was because of low power usage. We are not even fully ready for HD TV. How many hd channels are on dstv and the more it up scales the uglier it gets unless you love black boarders around your viewing screen. Yet someone above is claiming to get better resolution using hdmi, lol that's basic and that hdmi will still output rubbish resolution if the video is in rubbish resolution to begin with 55 Likes 2 Shares |

krattoss:See that someone. Using hdmi cable will still output the standard resolution if the video u are watching is standard to begin with so no difference. And if the video is full HD or from some games on ps4 pro or Xbox one x a uhd hdr enabled led tv will definitely be better than your Samsung TV. It has nothing to do with hdmi 51 Likes 2 Shares |

tidedroid:What extra detail it's 720 p on a 4k TV to me its a downgrade. Also full 1080 HD in 4k is still a downgrade because as the 4k TV upscales some details are lost unless u prefer small viewing angle with black boarders. Watching a 720p on your phone that's 1080p to me will be much more detailed than watching on 4k TV. Best case scenario their won't be any noticeable difference. That 720 video will be better viewed on a 720p or 1080p state of the art tv 19 Likes 1 Share |

Have to agree. Even here in the US, the cable tv providers have very few 4k content. And one is required to upgrade to their latest cable boxes in order to be able to receive 4k. Unlimited internet data, which rarely exists in Nigeria, is a must as well. Pretty much every Home has unlimited internet here, so that limitation does not exist. So unless you have unlimited internet and a provider that transmits 4k content, having a 4k tv there in Nigeria, a country where most people still access the internet via their mobile phones, makes no sense. 57 Likes 2 Shares |
