Well, we live in a cash and carry society. Money is king. Too many coups, especially that of 1983 did not give our economy the chance to grow steadily and organically increase the middle class population before the advent of digital age. We are bombarded now with imports from China and online purchases etc. So we have lots more things to buy and consume/flaunt but little money to afford them.

Whoever now has money, irrespective of social class can suddenly "form" rich and successful. No matter the source: politics, yahoo, yahoo plus, corruption at work, kidnapping & robbery (as long as not caught), high class olosho, money ritual, religion, etc.

Nobody cares. Just have your money. So morality is long out of the window.

It was a critical point in our democratic history. Because after truncation of democracy in July 1966, we finally got it back in 1979. Between 1966 & 1979 was so much bloodshed, up to 3 million dead during civil war. A country that went through such trauma ought to know the value of a fresh democratic start of 1979.

It was a time events leading to the end of cold war was gradually starting under Reagan. We needed to position ourselves as a democratic bastion in Africa, to garner much credibility as South Africa was still mired in Apartheid. Our incessant silly coups also somehow favoured Apartheid views that black people cannot be trusted to peacefully and progressively ruled themselves. After all Nigeria with so much human and natural resources could not.

I had the pleasure of being Archbishop Dr Desmond Tutu's student many years back. Some of these issues were covered. He was travelling across the world campaigning against Apartheid during those days, even winning Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. He encountered all these discussions in his travels. People across the world discuss and assess what we do locally. Influencing their foreign policies.
