What's the Big Idea?
In our current atmosphere of high unemployment there are many factors that have prevented companies from growing faster and adding jobs. But one area that has not received nearly as much attention is the labor shortage when it comes to skilled workers. Recruiters simply can't fill these job vacancies. In industries such as manufacturing this problem is particularly pronounced, as the older work force that possessed the right skills is retiring, while the younger generation has shunned careers in this sector. After all, the outlook for manufacturing was quite gloomy for a long time.

While H-1B visas have allowed an influx of highly skilled immigrants in the technology sector, that is still not enough to meet labor demands. In fact, a recent survey found that 83% of manufacturers reported a moderate or severe shortage of skilled production workers to hire. The problem is also found across many other sectors of the economy, from energy to aerospace to consumer products and technology.
"There is a huge mismatch between the jobs that are available and the workers that are out there," says Patricia Milligan, President of Human Capital at Mercer. Milligan says the workers with the right skills need to be considered "a pretty critical asset" to businesses, and the task of keeping them engaged needs to be "one of the single most important thing that leaders and managers focus on."

What's the Significance?

According to Milligan, "never before has keeping the right people and finding them been as high on the agendas of great companies as it is today." So what are successful companies doing to engage and retain these key assets? Milligan points to "world-class companies" who are working with academic institutions to more rigorously evaluate curriculums. Many of the "skills" that are currently being taught are what could be called "transitory" because the jobs themselves are being transformed or replaced by automated technological processes. More dynamic curriculums are needed to keep up with the pace of change if we hope to train the work force for the jobs that will exist in the future.

When you look at the global picture, the demographics, the birth rates and replacement ratios in the workforce, Milligan sees a "skilled workers’ world," and they will have the power. "There’s no question that the workers with the right skills around the world are going to own their own futures," she says, "and we want to compete for those workers."

Never buy a "Tokunbo" or used car without checking the Vehicle History Report. Most of these cars have undergone severe damage from Flood, accidents, vandalism, and have had the mileage tampered with.

Please note: This is not a free service. It costs a mere pittance compared to the millions a vehicle may cost, and the thousands saved in future repairs.

How to proceed:

1. Get the VIN from the vehicle, take a picture or type the VIN. The most common locations are shown.

2. Send the VIN to CarGuideNG via any of the following:

3. VIN Report will be ready 5 - 10 minutes after confirmation. We aim to eliminate all delays.

4. We are available for any further questions or clarifications required.

I will have loved it more if the stats shared was from a Nigeria or African perspective. However, it holds a useful message, 'if one goes to great lengths to acquire in demand technology backed skills, securing a good job would be breeze'.

Did you know that a reasonable number of typewriter typists lost their jobs because they did not learn how to use the Computer? Adaptability is a skill to have in this age.

With Al, IoT, AR, VR and other technology on the rise, the future belongs to those who act now.

For Information purpose.

The article you cited is relevant to advanced countries, not third-world countries. I can tell you that entrepreneurs will "own the future" in Africa.

Unlike in advanced countries where mega-corporations dominate markets and where manufacturing is at the level of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), Africa is still an "open field" as most industries and sectors are underdeveloped and unexplored. This is where opportunities of the future exists.

Entrepreneurs with the skills and intelligence to put into practice innovative ideas and initiatives in the many untapped fields of our economic endeavors will truly "own the future."

Afterall, the Bill Gates of this world did not "own the future" working for other people or seeking jobs at companies. The rich became so because they started a business. No one gets rich working for another person!

I think a lot of people are now losing jobs to artificial intelligence and many companies are down sizing because of it. They really won't give a reason for that anyways

what u didn't consider is the fact that the advance countries are flooding the developing countries with their brand, they are monetizing the human capital. they are already taping the so called untapped field. so you either work for them as a skilled employee or compete with them as an entrepreneur or join them as partners, either they win

Skilled workers wouldn't have been enough, especially in Nigeria where Nepotism is the order, and those factories also look for skilled workers freely but do not want to contribute to thier trainings and self development.

The skill gap is also as a result of Government inability to socially include it's youth, resulting in Lack of Interest. But that's not all, this unskilled youth have began to empower themselves in other to function in their area of interest and they have started to flood the Industries and most especially the Tech space, not as a worker but as an Entrepreneur.

Unfortunately, everyone can't be an entrepreneur, the vices of skill gap is still at Large, and the Youth are not somewhat interested in it's Acquisition; No not possible, After spending so much Money, Time and energy in the higher institution learning irrelevant curriculum, I myself wouldn't have love to acquire more skills.

I always believe Nigeria and some other developing African countries are still in the 1st or 2nd Industrial revolution, check our digital spaces NTA and CHANNELS TV are crap, our Manufacturing Industries can't even fabricate their own efficient machines not to even mention Robots.

The Skill gap is as a result little social Inclusion and a countries failure to graduate from one industrial era to another.. chikena

Working for them is enslavement. Yes, you collect a salary and take care of your immediate family, but that is it. Your family maybe comfortable but your country is not developed. Do you think people in Asokoro and Banana Island are necessarily happy with the state of the country, even though they live in these nice and expensive places?

Besides, the company you work for takes a bulk of the money you generate for them as an employee, and only pays you peanuts - less than 5% of how much you make for them. Why should you settle for less when you can get more?

More so, you don't compete by being under the entity you compete with or against. We cannot develop our country or continent by defining that development to only be when foreign companies come and open a branch here. We should include and, really, be encouraging our own people to open up the businesses, instead of promote being employees of foreign-owned companies.

Doing so keeps the wealth generated here and also provides the opportunity for us to become competent and capable at running successful companies. People and countries develop that way, not by working for people from other countries or allow them to steal our talented brains through some "immigration visa program" which are all scams aimed at stealing intelligent people for use in developing their own economy.

If China had waited for American or European companies to "come and invest in China" or to come and build their infrastructure as we do here, they would have waited until eternity and they won't manufacture "pin" today. Let us encourage "local entrepreneurship!"

Neither is it a guarantee that one will get rich starting a business. The employee earning 10m minus benefits monthly and the business man making 500k monthly who would you consider as rich. Bottom line...find your path and stick to it. You will prosper there. Whether as an employee or enterpreneur.

I hope I no sound somehow o. Just my humble opinion

you know what? u are hundred percent correct. but that is not my point. my point is, they'll win either way. there is a solution though. but I'd prefer to not talk about them for now because I just wanted to point out a blind spot. tell u what, for the next two weeks use objective reasoning to reason about ur conviction. hit me up latter and let see what u got. the catch is, u must tell ur self the truth no matter how disturbing u find it.
