North: ‘Don’t Blame ACF for Leadership Failure’
By John Shiklam in Kaduna, 06.18.2010
Chairman of the northern socio-cultural organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Maj. Gen. Ibrahim B.M. Haruna (rtd), said it was unfair for anybody to attribute the failures of northern leaders to the Forum, saying those in leadership positions in the region should be held responsible.
ACF also noted that the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, needs more than goodwill and moral support to succeed and deliver on the promise of credible elections in 2011, given the situation of things on the ground.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after paying a courtesy call to the Kaduna state governor, Mr. Patrick Yakowa, at the Government House, Kaduna, Haruna said it was wrong for anybody to heap blame on the forum, stressing that ACF cannot take over the roles assigned to governors and traditional rulers in the north.
According to him, it was erroneous for people to insinuate that the Forum had failed to deliver on its mandate and should therefore be held responsible for the increasing cases of frequent religious and ethnic crisis in the north, pointing out that ACF is a consolidating and advisory body which does not have executive capacity.
According to him, the responsibility of ACF stops at the limit of its mandate, insisting that the Forum has done creditably well within the limit of its powers.
Also in a communiqué issued at the end of its National Working Committee (NWC) which held at its secretariat in Kaduna, the Forum noted the desires of Nigerians for credible elections in 2011 andurged the authorities to ensure that every machinery that will bring about credible elections is made available to the new management of the electoral body.
The communiqué which was signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Forum, Mr. Anthony N. Z. Sani, noted the positive response the appointment of the new INEC chairman, Jega, received across the country and commended President Goodluck Jonathan for the “courage and wisdom to select a Nigerian whose credentials suggest he is the right man for the job.”
ACF, while congratulating Jega on his appointment, urged him not to disappoint Nigerians who believe in him with a passion.
