Festac Town is one of the oldest planned communities in Nigeria.

This expansive residential estate was originally built to host participants at FESTAC 77 – an African Festival of Arts and Culture that held in 1977.

At the time it was built and commissioned, Festac town was a model residential estate. It was the first of its kind in Africa. Festac town, then, boasted of world-class social and public amenities. But most importantly, the estate featured access to public transportation and an excellent road network.

Indeed, Festac town - at its early stage - was a choice residential location in Nigeria.

Sadly, today, most of the one-time excellent amenities and public infrastructure in Festac town have collapsed or enormously deteriorated. For instance, the expansive road networks in Festac are in atrocious conditions.

Note, Festac town is managed by the Federal Housing Authority (FHA). However, the Federal, State and Local Government all lay claim to the management of the estate.

Each tier of government occasionally issue the residents with various charges ranging from valuation fees, local government levies to tenement rates.

The battle for the control of Festac Town has lingered on between the Federal government and the Lagos State and to the detriment of the residents of the Estate.

Today, Festac suffers from a terrific neglect by the governments. There are no functional infrastructure. Public infrastructure that still exist are in atrocious conditions. Notable of these infrastructure are the network of roads.

As a result, driving on the roads in Festac have become a very bumpy and unpleasant experience – no thanks to the various roads there that are replete with crater-size potholes, eroded road surfaces and collapsed portions of some roads.

Indeed, Festac town is a classic example of a place with absolutely no presence of government.

Festac town is located in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos state.

Interestingly, the headquarters of the Amuwo Odofin Local Government is situated in Festac.

The Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government is Executive Chairman, Engineer Valentine Oluwaseyi Buraimoh.

The Governor of Lagos state is Akinwunmi Ambode.

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) reports to the Federal Government of Nigeria currently headed by President Mohammadu Buhari
You know u were already making sense and was beginning to feel your story until I got to that Buhari part. Ffs what has Buhari got to do with this? Can you not point out issues and identify the right authorities without mindlessly naming Buhari/Osinbajo as the fault? How could u u not simply tag FHA and maybe Lagos roads authority etc in this issues as the appropriate authorities concerned? If your kerosene isnt burning well, it is Buhari. If the your barber gives you a wrong haircut it is Buhari who did not teach the barber to be a good barber...if this it is Buhari if that it is Buhari. I have left the wailers to their ignorance and PDS but to think more are joining that bandwagon is really really heartbreaking.
FYI most of these roads have been inaccessible since 19-gbogboro...yes. I know for that for sure so it wasnt Buhari who created the potholes.

This one no be potholes naaaa! Just cross the "expressway" into Satellite Town and you will see the true definition of potholes. Fuel tankers have totally wrecked the roads.

I will take some pictures and share so you can see for yourself.

If those properties enter Lagos state hand na in be say tinubu don hammer.I think say na Lagos state government own that land.No wonder we no dey hear complain of land grabbers in festac like lekki, ajah,vi,ikoyi, surulere and other high profile places.I no pray make Lagos state win over those properties because them go become tinubu's personal properties .

Festac can never be given to lagos state.

It will cause crises because the people own the buildings and not fha

Must Lagos take over before they fix the road? Did Lagos take over Oshodi- MM International Airport road before they started repair works on the road? What stops Lagos from repairing the roads and taking an invoice for the repair to the Federal Government? Or is Buhari the governor of Festac?

Lagos will not repair this road, I done tell you. This festac is eyesore. It will be waste of money to pump millions here. What is the return to govt by repairing this road, ehh? Nothing! The people that live here wish bad on the govt and Eleko everyday. We are going to tear this vommunity down soon as FG hand it over. If you live here start looking for housing elsewhere. Notice will go out soon after it is returned to Lagos.

Its an eye sore. An abandoned community.

Either fg fix it or habd it over so we can demolish and build something new and modern.

Thanks for these pics. Festac was a beauty to behold in the 80/90's. Early 2000's was also a bit okay aside the flooding around 21rd when it rains.

The residents destroyed Festac Town. All playground was turned into markets, designated parks became business places and all ground floors extensions became shops. The drainage became refuse dumb.

The crises between FHA and LASG made matters worst.

I miss my 512rd,stone field and Co.
I remember then after school, we do play ball till 7pm with uniform

Night was like day with the flood lights, the drainage was so clean and the trees everywhere especially 22rd. Big dogonyaro trees that serves as canopy for relaxation.
