A prophecy is a prediction , it can be Divine ( from God ) , satanic , false or man made.

The owner of a Divine prophecy is God and always comes to pass or be cancelled by God Himself.

Satanic prophecies do come to pass if not cancelled by a higher power than the prophesying.

That of man is most times not coming to pass.

In the old testament, prophecy mean prediction but since the new testament is fulfillment of the old, prophecy doesn't mean prediction IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.

There is no new testament prophecy. in every generation A prophet will always be a prophet , and prophecy will always be prophecy,the seer will always be the seer

Divine Prophecies can be positive or negative which would come to manifestations depending on our obedience , repentance and faith.

Like that of Hezekiah in 2 kings 20 , there was a prophecy that he would die , but with prayer from him , God added 15 more years to his years and he did not die .

Moses gave good prophecies to the Israelites regarding the promised land but told them it is on the condition of their obedience to the commandments of the Lord.

2 Chronicles 15:1-2 KJV
And the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded: [2] And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The Lord is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.

As you rightly said , some fake Pastor have exploited this to dupe and lead people astray .But if we all know what the words of God says and we obey it , we don't need to go to anyone to pray for or with us talkless of prophesying to us.

there is a general WOF movement doctrine that prophecy in the new testament is preaching and comfort. misinterpretation of 1Cor 14:4 has a lot of injury to prophetic ministry. there is difference between prophesying, The gift of prophecy and the office of the prophet. Someone can of course make prophetic declaration by faith and based on the knowledge of the bible and not necessarily by the gift of prophecy. the gift of prophecy has to do with divinely inspired utterance which can be accompanied by word of supernatural knowledge and wisdom. of course such a one may give comfort and exhortation as inspired and also experience ability to see ,know and predict but with all these ,that doesnt make the person a prophet. The prophet occupies an office . There is authority in his mouth. He can pronounce judgement on a nation,persons etc. He is a seer. i believe its the highest office. the principles about the prophetic is thesme in both old and new testament. One of the reasons prophetic ministry is attacked today is based on american teaching
