Sources close to top PDP leaders have revealed that governor Wike of Rivers State is currently in talks with former Senate Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio to shelve plans to engineer the defection of 15 Senators from the PDP to the APC when the Senate resumes plenary. According to these very reliable sources, governor Wike and the PDP national leadership have been having sleepless nights ever since Akpabio dumped the party and resigned his position in the Senate as Minority Leader. It was gathered that this move by Akpabio dealt a serious blow to the PDP and its plans to maintain control of the National Assembly and its wider plans for the 2019 general elections. On the move by governor Wike to forestall further defections from the PDP, our sources indicate that the Rivers State governor met with Senator Akpabio both directly and through emissaries to plead with the Senator to shelve plans to engineer the defection of 15 Senators from the PDP because such a move would spell doom for the party. It would sound the death knell for the former ruling party that once boasted that it would rule Nigeria for 60 years before any other party smelt power. Our sources say governor Wike, in a bid to make Senator Akpabio see reasons with him, wondered why the former Akwa Ibom governor is bent on destroying the house that made him who he is today, having served on the PDP platform as Commissioner, Governor and now, Senator. In response, the former Senate Minority Leader told the governor that the PDP has veered off course from its founding ideals and has lost touch with the people both at the national level and in Akwa Ibom state, hence his decision to quit.
