Located on the Andaman islands, the Jarawa tribe of only a few hundred members have remained isolated from the modern world for more than 55,000 years. Poachers arriving on the island have tainted them with some modern items, and threaten their ancient way of life. Without help, this tribe may not survive.

Jarawa History

The Jarawa, meaning People of the Land, live off the land. They have traditions dating back to the beginning of mankind. Although some modern devices, like flashlights, have been left behind or have been given to them by poachers, they use the earth and debris to make everything they need.

They’re so against changing their ways, that the tribe is hostile to outsiders. Members of the tribe will use violence to keep intruders out, if necessary. When offered help, they reject it. After all, they’ve survived this long on their own.

Poaching Interference

The Jarawa people have a distinctive language and have had little to no contact with the outside world in thousands of years. For the last few decades, poachers have been landing on the island to hunt wild boar. This not only interfered with the Jarawa by leaving modern conveniences for them but severely cut into their food resources.

Unless the poachers are dealt with, the Jarawa may not survive. They depend on the land and its gifts to survive and thrive, as they’ve done for tens of thousands of years. Modern man taking what they want from the island could change or decimate their existence forever.

The Future Of The Jarawa

If the Indian government doesn’t step in and help the Jarawa, experts say their tribe won’t last another ten years on the island. Roads have been built that run through Jarawa territory and through their jungle. This disrupts their way of life and makes it easier for more people to move through the island.

Hopefully, this ancient tribe will accept help, so they can continue to live and survive as they’ve done since the beginning. So far they’ve resisted any kind of assistance, and react in a hostile way to outsiders. They’ve survived natural disasters, sickness, and tragedy over the lifetime of their existence, but can they survive modern man? Only time will tell. We hope so.
