No fewer than seven persons have reportedly died under a mysterious Chemical emission in Anambra State, following a continued burning lignite in Umuzu Mbana, Otolo Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the State.

The lignite, which sends out gas with irritating sulphurous odour, has also led to the admission of scores of residents in different hospitals in the area, Tribune reports.

President General of the community, Tony Afam Muodielo, who made the disclosure in a statement, lamented the devastating effect of the chemical discovered at a site in that community sometime in March.

He regretted that government had not done much to save his people from the killer chemical.

According to him, a new dimension to the problem is the smoke from the site that enveloped the entire community with offensive and irritating odour that subject residents to suffocation every evening.

“The emission has recently become more damaging and escalating. Surroundings of the chemical site are caving in and the emission becomes stronger. We have tried to put out the fire burning underground to no avail and we decided to leave the rains to deal with it.

“But despite the heavy rains so far experienced this year, the fire has been as if the rains are fueling it.

“Last night [Friday], after a little rain, we were unable to sleep. The most astonishing thing is that we have been recording sudden deaths in recent time.

“Within a space of two months, we have lost seven persons and we do not known the cause of their death. But if you put two and two together, you find out that it is not natural death. We never recorded that number of deaths in the past in this community,” he lamented.

This is really unfortunate... It's a tip of the iceberg compared to the harmful gas emissions that the good people of Niger Delta have been experiencing for decades now..
And successive governments have done little or nothing about it.

Difference between Anambra And Niger Delta is That Anambrarian will keep on fighting maintaining the course of the fight until government reacts(which will be very soon)

But Niger Delta doesn't know what they want, they just cause nuisance to the people in the community, destroying their fish farm,Threaten hell on Earth but when they are bribed through the back door, they will go in like snail into it's shell.

That factory should be shutdown immediately. And its owners should be punished for air pollution

News about the site had been reported on Nairaland before. It seems more like a volcano that may erupt in the near future. It was earlier reported that fire was burning at one location in Nnewi, and it was bringing out smoke with a sulphurous odour.

They are inhaling sulphuric acid. The sulphuric odor is some sulfur compound burning in air and water vapor. it's very acidic and corrosive.
There is most likely a volcanic activity in the area if it was of natural cause.
In any case, drastic and urgent steps should be taken and the residents should be evacuated.

Oops! Never read this anywhere. Thanks for enlightening.....

The state government should not wait around for the federal government, then. There is no capacity by our government; we haven't built any from all the stealing, so they should seek technical help directly from the UN, through one of its agencies.

Upon testing and ascertaining what is happening there, a line of action can then be crafted to address the problem. The emitted gas may even be a useful natural resource that we don't know what to do with, but when a country refuses to lay emphasis on science and technology, then we remain vulnerable to even the smallest challenge that nature throws us. We must invest in science and technology! Enough with stealing!

Meanwhile, the locals must save themselves. They should vacate the affected area.

You should have equipped yourself with details instead of coming online to say this your thrash. The cleaning of Ogoniland is not the same as cleaning up of Upper Iweka to down flyover just over the night. The UN recommendations say it will take up to 20-30 yrs. UN recommendations come in different stages among which the FG just completed one of stages which started 2yrs ago. If you care to educate yourself and stop listening to every propaganda you hear from Radio Biafra and your semi god, Nnamdi Kanu. Log on to WWW.hyprep.gov.ng .You will see how far the government has gone in implementing the UN recommendations on the cleaning up of Ogoni Land instead of the fiction you daily hear from Radio Biafra.

I think the issue of Niger delta is self inflicted and will continue if they did not curb the issue of pipeline vandalism which the major Beneficiries of the oil bunkering are the same indigenous people of Niger delta.

But for that of anambara I suspect fake product or drugs manufacturing gone wrong. Now u want govt of Nigeria to come to ur aide, wondering what happened to almighty biafran govt with their sophisticated team scientist.
