Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja has restrained MultiChoice Nigeria from effecting its recent hike in DSTV subscription.

The company had in July increased the subscription rate for the DSTV Premium package from N14,700 to N15,800, Compact Plus from N9,900 to N10,650, Compact from N6,300 to N6,800, Family from N3,800 to N4,000, and Access from N1,900 to N2,000.

The implementation of the rates commenced on August 1.

However, ruling in a case challenging the hike in subscription on Monday, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba granted an injunction restraining MultiChoice from implementing the new rates.

Also, the court restrained the company from any conduct capable of interfering with the regulatory process of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC).

The orders were granted in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/894/2018 Federal Republic of Nigeria v. MultiChoice Nigeria Limited.

Representing the Federal Government were Babatunde Irukera Esq, Abimbola Ojenike, Eme David-Ojugo, Moray Adebayo, Teniola Medupin and Florence Abebe.

No, but in the present circumstances, it's exploitative.

What exactly is the role of Consumer Protection Council (CPC)?
"The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) Act, enacted in 1992 is the primary law in Nigeria which centres on a pragmatic approach to enforcement of consumer rights making the Act consumer focused. Section 6 of the Act provides that consumers can bring complaints where they have suffered a loss, injury or damage while Section 8 provides for opportunity for consumers to get redress which makes the Act adequate to meet consumer rights."
ENFORCEMENT OF CONSUMER RIGHTS- It is not your right to watch Pay TV at low cost
LOSS, INJURY or DAMAGE- In this case, what exactly have we suffered? Pay TV subscription is not a necessity.I
Nigeria operates a free market economy
If CPC wants to be great, they should arrest those selling ram at inflated prices. FOOD IS A NECESSITY!

Price of Ram has gone up from last year but the legislative wont do anything about that. The court has no business with this is an open market. Why doesnt the CPC fight bars and hotels that sell their drinks and offer services at ridiculous price.
we Nigerians are forget that DSTV is not a must own commodity, that's why there are other cheaper Pay tv that are substitute.
I think the government and its regulating bodies should leave multi-choice alone, the cost of providing these contents doesnt come cheap either, so they have the right to increase their charges.

PayTV is a luxury, if you cannot afford it, settle for what you can. You can either sleep in a 7 star, 5 star or 2 star hotel. Nigerians like going for what they cannot afford. Live within your means and leave DStv alone. Their customers have already made payment; im sure some paid in advance sef... If you cannot enter Uber, take Moluee!

What is the business of cpc with the way private companies run their businesses? Or is multchoice owned by the Federal government?

CPC should please help Nigerians by prevailing on Electric Distribution companies to reduce charges.

PDP are celebrating the suspension of the election in Wike’s backyard.
APC are calling for INEC to declare the result.

What does this tell you about 2019?

Seriously, we need a serious cable tv company dat wil compete with multichoice. They are taking Nigerians for granted.

They keep increasing tariff when the services is getting worse by the day.

They know Nigerians dont have plenty options.

Within last 1 month:

* they announced increment in tariff with few days notice to subscribers.......

** They failed to air community shield when a lot of people basically subscribed because of it. No announcement to subscriber dat dey av dropped it

**No English FA cup and carling cup (capital one) ds year and dey are yet to announced. Only few pple dat read their article after pple called dem out for failure to show community shield btw line will know dat.

May be dey will drop epl soon self before we know

Dstv will remain for pple watching african magic

In Economics, we were taught in those days that prices of goods and services are fixed by the forces of demand and supply - a free market economy. But in Nigeria, the reverse is the case, they even killed tstv..... Since 1960.

This is where the NBC & CPC need to step in. Nigerians can be ripped off all the time. I went to a country and I saw what the government are doing, for instance as a company can't pay it's citizens peanut. There is a minimum rate you pay it's citizens for every level. The rights of its Citizen are well protected. But just as someone said in Nigeria anything goes. When shall we arise o sleeping giant!

Last month, when SLOT refused to refund my money over the fake spare phone batteries that they sold to me, it was the CPC that helped me collect my money to the last penny.

Agreed, focus should be on other more important issues but individuals directly affected have to report the matters to the CPC or else, they will linger. Even this case probably started with private complaints before it snowballed into a court case.

We can rant and rave all day on our keyboards but, until we start making demands at the right quarters, the status quo will persist.

Can you see? This Nnamdi Dimgba was one of the judges that the Dull-ard wanted to imprison for not dancing to his tunes. Thank goodness he overcame his ordeals and now he is serving the ordinary Nigerian's interests in ways that the Dull-ard can never understand.
