Falana: Those who cornered our commonwealth shouldn’t talk of restructuring

Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, says those who have cornered the country’s commonwealth should not be allowed to talk of restructuring.

Falana made the submission on Wednesday when he delivered a paper at the Mike Okonkwo annual lecture in Lagos.

According to the lawyer, restructuring would not guarantee unity or political stability without the “democratisation of powers.”

He said former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar who is a leading advocate of restructuring has not addressed the issue of wealth redistribution.

“The country has always been restructured by the ruling class and that the current structure was imposed by the fiat of military dictators. No doubt, the country is ripe for restructuring or power devolution but it cannot guarantee unity and political stability without the democratisation of powers and equitable redistribution of the commonwealth along egalitarian lines,” Falana said.

“Restructuring without the equitable redistribution of the commonwealth will not promote unity or political stability.

“A leading PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has become one of the leading proponents of restructuring. But his support for restructuring has not addressed the crucial issue of the redistribution of the national wealth.

“After all, in his capacity as the nation’s vice-president and chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, alhaji Abubakar presided over the restructuring of the nation’s economy through the liquidation of public assets and the privatization of the commanding height of the economy.

“The nation cannot be seriously restructured without equitable redistribution of wealth. Therefore, those who have cornered our commonwealth should not be allowed to talk of restructuring in vacuo. In other words, the campaign for restructuring should encompass the decentralization and democratization of political and economic powers which have been privatised by all factions of the ruling class.”

He said Nigerians must demand an end to a policy that allows political office holders and civil servants who constitute less than one percent of the population to continue to allocate 70 percent of the country’s resources to themselves.

“If the federal government could withdraw $12.4 billion from the foreign reserves to pay questionable external debts and subsidize the local bourgeoisie with intervention funds running to trillions of naira it cannot turn round to complain of lack of fund to fix collapsed social infrastructures, education, health transportation and agriculture and create jobs for our army of unemployed youths,” Falana said.

“The recovery of the stolen wealth of the nation from foreign and local thieves should be a collective battle while the fund recovered from corrupt public officers and their privies is spent on job creation and fixing of hospitals and schools as well as the provision of other social services.

“Out of despondency and disenchantment with the political system some groups of young men and women have demanded for the balkanization of the country. However, the majority of members of the ruling class have insisted on restructuring as a basis for the corporate existence of the country. Religious groups have recommended prayers as the panacea to the myriad of problems plaguing the nation.”

“The nation cannot be seriously restructured without equitable redistribution of wealth. Therefore, those who have cornered our commonwealth should not be allowed to talk of restructuring in vacuo.

People like Atiku are only talking about restructuring just to win election and nothing else. Ask him about creation of equal numbers of States between the south and north and see how he will quickly jettison the idea.

Restructuring is not an ending activity. We will always continue to thinker with our structure as we evolve. For us to progress, we need sincere, knowledgeable and patriotic political leadership across board. Without changing the crooked mindset of our current crop of political elites, we can never progress irrespective of the political structure that we adopt.

Typical Nigerian. We leave the subject and attack the person's personality.
Why dont we set another day or page for the messengers crucifixion?
Let's deal with the message today.
And if people that squandered our common wealth shouldn't talk restructuring, who else should? Is anyone a saint in this country ?

smiley , truth be told, atiku should explain what his own restructuring is all about, (is it removing items out of exclusive list, is it state police, is it regional resource control, is it return to regional government and collapse of states to form region) he should let us know how he plans on achieving this with or without the legislature. the last time Mr atiku was in government with his Fulani crony El rufai of BPE, they both restructured all of our asset, and money making ventures to the pocket of few. they even restructured peoples brain that government don't have business doing business. yet Germany own shares in Benz, Qatar has shares in Porsche and has an airline, Dubai and UAE owns hotels and airline. Just like a Yahoo boy banks on the unlimited supply of foolish White folks, The Nigerian Politician banks on a huge population of docile, and forgetful people who never read. Am sure if abacha was alive and wants to rule again he just needs to find something to cajole sentiments of people, and claim to be a reformed Democrat

In as much as I don't like this current administration, any party using restructuring for 2019 election campaign is just a propaganda. I won't say more than this. The truth is most of us knows the way forward for a better Nigeria but we tend to ignore it.

After Osibanjo Lecture on Restructuring so many people in my Department who are against PMB agreed with Osibanjo's submission.
Most of them asked why did Osibanjo refused to grant press conferences throughout their tenure, they said had it been he was doing things like that people would have understood where the administration is driving to. Poor communication is one of the spanners this administration threw into the wheels of their reign.

Atiku is a very useless and cunning man and I pity those who will vote for him.

Earlier this year (or last year I guess), Atiku cleared the air on his promise of restructuring. He implied that states would still rely on crude oil proceeds. I can't dig out that info now but son enough I will.

Words on marble by Falana.

Those who ruined Nigeria should not be allowed to talk about how Nigeria should be fixed. They had their chance but scattered the entire system and made it work for only them while the masses suffered.

This is the status quo that PMB has aggressively altered and this is why many of the 1% who make up the elite are now clamouring for his removal.

THE SYSTEM NO LONGER FAVOURS THEM!!

Word on the street is that Falana and EFCC have been sharing properties including houses seized from the so called looters.
For example, one very gigantic property seized from AA Rano was allegedly used to settle Falana.
