What brought other private universities this far, oga?

Do we need to start stating the obvious? How Covenant University is the best private University in Nigeria among other well deserved records? How they're internationally recognised by global ranking organisations?

I don't know what brought other private universities this far but this might just be a major contributing factor of what brought Covenant University farther than them. Everyone should stick to what works best for them.

That said, next time, stick to the context of the conversation (or my comment.) I discussed Covenant University without reference to other private universities. I would appreciate it if you don't drag me further into other subjects.
Cheers.

If education is by use of phones and absolute social freedom then what about those who can't afford phones?
Social freedom has help our direction less youth redefine education in a very bad way.

The freedom to bend to peer pressure of cultism and likes now defines education more because those thing can help graduates make money in easier ways than labour or skills. Pathetic thinking.

The emboldened statement is terrible.

Social freedom is not what corrupts the youth. The misuse of social freedom is what corrupts a lot of people. Social freedom is good. However, when it is misused, the consequences can be very grave. You and Covenant University are wrong to think freedom is bad or that freedom would make students wayward.

I enjoyed a lot of freedom while in school but it didn't make me become a cultist. I used my freedom wisely. I have friends who finished from the University of Ibadan as myself and with all the freedom we enjoyed and our access to mobile phones, we never joined a cult or became fraudsters.

Just so you know, while in NYSC camp, in my set, one of the most passed around girl was a Covenant University student. Even the indigenes slept with her. I know of one guy who ran a bar. She always drank there and he was sleeping with her as well. I caught them with my own eyes once.

Why am I saying all these? I want you to correct the impression that freedom corrupts or makes a person go astray. Freedom is good, misusing freedom is what is bad.

Bros anonymous. It's not only in Covenant University that these rules apply.. Infact its like there has been a clearly spelt out template that governs Christian private universities in Nigeria. Nigeria is such a hypoctitical nation. We love to pretend... They will argue with you that it's their rules and they didn't beg you to join the school. You chose out of your own volition to attend Christian private universities. Tho a nation where there are no laws, then there is no offence. There has to be laws... They are at liberty to set their own laws, however obnoxious it may seem.

take a cue from d Nigerian Law school, which to me has a very good standard as per discipline vis-a-vis freedom of association, expression and respecting fundamental rights.

And you wonder why Africa will always be where it is. Many European and American countries were like this before, but now, their governments had corrected so many wrongs which they believed at one point in the past were right.
Nigeria constitution unconditionally guarantee us some rights and freedom. And don't forget that constitution is supreme.
I agree with you on this. However, somebody has failed in his or her duty to uphold and use the power of the constitution. Some people took advantage of this to become nonchalant in dealing with others. Since there is nobody to use the constitution as autocorrect, we have options of staying away from institutions that wants to take advantage of the citizens, or we have dealings with them and bear the consequences.

To me, this is not supposed to be an issue.... The school was created to be a religious school... The students were aware of what theyere getting into when they got admitted, so coming here to start crying over what could have been averted by not atttending the school in the first place is useless...

Laws, rules and regulations are what makes us different from the animals..

Anyone who knows he/she won't be able to cope should leave the school and go somewhere else... Afterall, when in rome you have to behave like the romans and abide by their laws for peace to reign...

Or is it because its a christian school, and we christians do not act as aggresive as some other religions?? Do they think if it were to be in a moslem university most of these things they do would be tolerated?? Lets call a spade a spade and not a shovel, and lets be sincere to ourselves and let the school be with their rules and regulations...

grandiose4ever:
The Adooh and Marilyn case has revealed some of the absurd rule system that goes on in Covenant. I hereby use this opportunity to also call for the recall of Marilyn Effanga from expulsion but let anyone in Covenant uni that is without sin be the first to cast stones. she had sex but didn't commit it in school. I'm not sure what penalty she was given but considering CU and her antecedents i would wager it was expulsion.

Covenant university with an average NUC accreditation score of 90.48% is by far the best Nigerian university academically speaking. It is also one of three Nigerian universities founded before 2010 that has never lost an NUC accreditation before. The others being AUN, PAU . It also has the highest rate of investment on education according to NUC and the highest research output/size - Elsevier

However some very choking rules exist in Covenant University that NUC has a matter of urgency must clamp on. Why? CU serves as a model to private universities and if all religious schools adopt the CU model we would have a dangerous situation on our hand in the next few years.

Note: These rules/experiences do not apply to Covenant university Post Graduates. CU is unarguably the best place to run PG studies. But be very certain if you are going for BSc.

THE RULES

1) All students/lecturers irrespective of religious affiliations must go to church. Punishment for chapel default ranges from suspension to expulsion. It is unclear if there are punitive measures for lecturers.
b) Not bringing bible to church is also sanctionable.

2) No student is allowed to use SIM enabled devices(Phones)

3) Islamic holidays are disregarded - Usually almost all Christian schools in Nigeria acknowledge islamic holidays and allow their community to rest or even travel to felicitate with their loved. But CU folks are denied this priviledge enacted and backed by both the constutution and presidential order.

4) Christian holidays are disregarded - Easter comes and CU will force everyone to attend youth alive by winners chapel. Folks are prevented from going home. Punishment for violation is suspension to expulsion.

5) Exeat Required To Exit Campus: Students are required to make detailed application to student affairs before granted right to leave campus. At certain times people have been denied exeat for weddings of siblings, visiting sick parents etc.

6) A War Against Traditional Wears And Songs:
The student handbook doesn't prevent this but there has been an halt in student being allowed to wear traditionals. Traditional songs in church have also come under attack.

7) No Peaceful Protest Allowed - Punishment ranges from suspension to expulsion.

cool Sexual Activities Outside Campus Are Sanctioned.

9) The University handbook permits the university the right to invade your privacy
and search your belongings or devices for incriminating materials such as Porn or past sexual escapades.

10) Secular songs, "ungodly music", are banned in Covenant, Parties are also banned with the exception of picnics which is often monitored by
SDC.

1, 3,4,5,7,8,9 are potentially in violation of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria

POPULAR SCANDALS IN COVENANT

1) Virginity and HIV test conducted by university - Vice Chancellor, Prof. Obayan was summoned by Education Minister and the practice was discontinued.

2) Students suspended for not bringing bible to Church. It's unclear how the case ended.

3) 200 students expelled for not attending a certain departure service where the chancellor was angry. Halls were searched subsequently at about 10:00PM in the night, students in a bid to escape the search team started jumping from one window to the other on the fourth floor! Expulsion letters were dished out to students caught at about 4 - 6AM in the morning. The expulsion verdict was in breach of the prescribed punishment stated on the handbook and was lacking of any hearing stated in the handbook. NUC later intervened and the explusion was reduced to letter of warnings.

4) Students were once expelled for making noise during a football match. Apparently the chancellor warned them repeatedly after which they were expelled for not listening... I don't know if an appeal was accepted.

5) Rumour Alert: A student was once suspended for using two straws to drink coca cola - it is unclear whether this is true or not. But it was a popular rumour in CU.

6) Muyiwa Oludayo, current registrar once led a team to cut student trousers on the streets that were not compliant. While i cannot independently verify this one. CU students have a reputation for wearing trousers that do not reach the ankle which has been an issue between management and student.

7) Dean, Student Affairs, Timothy Anake a clearly disturbed individual led a team to cut the hair of hundreds of boys for misbehaving in faith tabernacle.

OTHER THINGS

1) Rules are relaxed for international students #Hypocrisy Some are allowed to have long hairs, other males are allowed to keep jelled hair. An American accent can keep away SDC in CU grin

2) Results are sent to parents with or without student permission - i don't really have a problem with this really.

3) Student council members are imposed by the school.

THE CORE PROBLEM OF COVENANT UNIVERSITY

The problem of Covenant University is the Seven core values which is absent of LOVE. Love, Mercy and Forgiveness are values alien to Covenant university. When you remove love and mercy then christianity is unrecognizable. Covenant university can become the world's best university if it wants but if it continues to abandon the important tenet of love then it has no value.

COVENANT UNIVERSITY A POTENTIAL DANGER TO CHRISTIANITY!
Covenant university: A time ago i witnessed two 500 level boys of CU blasting the idea of Christianity and making tremendous arguments against God. Most serious christians around that place just flee because those guys were dangerously intelligent. It made me sad that most Christians there were running away rather than engaging them. I did engage them though.

Now the interesting thing is the boys appeared to have become Atheists on CU campus. Secondly a friend told me before leaving for a university in Canada that all the services he has been forced to attend is enough to last his entire lifetime therefore he won't go to church again.

Now CU failed because we didn't focus on the right message. CU teaches you well when it comes to conquering the world, daring the impossible, making exploits. But messages on love, mercy, grace, charity(also important) were not propagated as radically as it should have, therefore we created a campus of spiritual but loveless beings.

COVENANT THE ANNOINTED!
Covenant is an highly annointed university, despite her shortcomings. I knew that clearly because the Holy Spirit led me to that school. My initial plan was to attend a prominent Christian school in the US, but God wanted me in CU. I am forever proud of that heritage, in that though i struggled it gave me the opportunity to encounter Christ.

The reassignment of Pastor Victor Oluwadamilare to CU marked the period of an intense move of the Holy Spirit. It was so intense that people who would rather hide under the bed than go to church would come to church with enthusiasm. Drug addicts and Porn addicts in their numbers would come and repent on the alter in brokenness. Some boys would complain bitterly that their lovers were no longer agreeing to have sex because they had gone with the move on campus. That was revival inspired by fire not by control. Infact Victor gave people the choice to come and came they did.

IT IS TIME FOR CU TO BECOME BETTER AND RISE ABOVE PETTY RELIGIOSITY AND BECOME AN AMMUNITION FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

I never said or implied the bold and don't think Covenant thinks same way.

Social freedom doesn't start and end in closed campus system like Covenant University. In fact the students spend only about 7 months on campus in a whole year and are as free as birds for the remaining 5 month unlike what people seem to imply always. Some of the student have freedom before coming to covenant and some even spent 2 or 3 yrs in public schools.

I tire o.. .i personally went to a Federal Uni . ..but I still don't support people campaigning against private schools.. ..it isn't written anywhere that it is compulsory to attend them.. .besides there are more rule friendly private schools like Babcock UNI....
Anybody that cannot cope with the rules in any institution must not attend it and later start castigating the school.. .it is optional. ...im sure the students were made aware of the rules and given a handbook before entry.. ...

Please understand, indeed, no one is forcing anyone. It is also not a campaign against private universities as you claim, it is instead a campaign to stop human right infringement in most private universities that no one deserves. My friend, no one deserves to be treated in those awful manner we've learnt about in the past few days.

Even in our various alma mater including the most secular government owned universities, when human right is infringed upon by the management, it is usually condemned by all and sundry. It is humanity this time and not a matter of who force anyone to go anywhere.

Finally, majority of these private owned schools hand their handbooks to the students after admission, at least, I can say of Bowen university so most times, there is no going back.

There is. You don't have the right to take anyone else's right. For those rules to have existed till date, it shows the judiciary is as messed up as it has always been or no one is going to court to tackle the issue from the root. They only go when they have urgent need for a court miracle.

By anonymous? Wonderful! cheesy

The style of writing gives the author away, and I believe other readers can easily guess the writer. Who is the major poster of news about Christians and Covenant University on nairaland? cheesy

We may have several students of the institution on this forum but only one of them goes this far to write and argue for/against the school. Even the method of presentation of arguments and use of language is also apparent. cheesy

Moving away from that, the fact remains that those rules are what brought Covenant University this far. If they changed all the rules because people cried foul, would they have achieved this much?

If you don't like their system, drop out! If you're not yet in the school, apply for federal universities and enjoy your fair share of the annual strike.

It's bad to be part of a system you voluntarily agreed to join only to start making posts like this. And worse still, you hide behind "anonymous" to post it.

And to cap it all, if God sent you there to learn as you said, keep quiet and learn what you need to learn - then leave when you're done. Or did God send you there to be an activist?

You're a believer, I suppose and you can engage me biblically if you think my position is wrong. I have not denied your points, I've merely asserted that you have the choice to leave, and that by virtue of the fact that God directed you there to learn, learn all you need to and move on.

P. S
I'm no covenant university student. I just love to see from another angle. Cheers!

Didn't really occur to me who the could be until I read this. So much exhibition of fear by members of the university community.

One thing about this religious bigot is that they seek issues where there is non, it a university and nobody forced anyone. They choose to school there and if the place is not convenient they can as well change! Nobody is forcing anything on anybody. Your post shows how narrow minded you are. To analyse issues as this you need to ask yourself why then, with all the 'abhorrent rules' do people still choose to study there? At least you will not tell me they have been jazzed because that's not possible. Don't be quick to judge young man.

One thing I've come to understand is that while Jesus was here on earth, he never forced anyone to serve him. He preached the gospel, healed the sick and was an epitome of mercy and love.

Now, the above truths gets me thinking about CU. If Oyedepo believes in the power of God, why does he force people to perform Godly acts? Why is CU forcing the tenets of Christianity down the throat of its student? If they truly believe in Gods power, why don't they allow him to work in the lives of their students? Let them receive the gospel freely without coercion, or go to church because they want to know him not because they are forced?

The answer, the so-called christian authority of CU don't have faith in God to change lives or influence people. They feel they have to help God by forcing religion the throat of unwilling students and meting out punishment to the recalcitrant ones. How is this warped ideology different from boko haram or Isis that canes people or even kills or metes out other severe punishment for refusing to follow their ways. I think CU is only breeding future Adolph Hitlers[/quote]

To think that some youths are attacking the poster makes one sigh at future of this country. Imagine such backward rule this 21st century and some Nigerians are still happy to have it laid out to them. In civilized countries, you can't even beat your child over any circumstance, yet are all western kids corrupt because of this?
Few years back, a very popular holiness inspired church doesn't permit the use of TV sets for their members because it's the devil's box. Fast forward to 2018, they built one of the largest auditoriums in Lagos which I believe it would be virtually impossible to reach the congregation without a giant TV. Imagine the devil's toolbox in a magnificent form in the house of God. These petty rules are what keeps us in this state as a nation.
As a faith based institution, certain standards should be expected but there is a point it becomes too outrageous
