An employee of a thrift collection company, Unilamb Global Savings Company, Ogechi Okoli, 28, and five other accused who are also employees of the company on Wednesday appeared in a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing the company’s N3 million.

Other accused are: Amarachi Opara, 27; Omotayo Oluwanisola, 27; Oluchi Uzoma, 29; Edhewres Amans, 25; and Peace Malachy, 26, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, theft and forgery and they pleaded not guilty to the offences.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Hafsat Ajibode, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 23 at 110, Nnamdi Azikwe St. on Lagos Island, Lagos.

Ajibode said that the second accused, Opara, who was the system operator of the firm, masterminded the theft because he was in charge of inputting all the data of customers and transactions carried out daily.

She told the court that the accused opened bank account where he and other accused siphoned the money collected from customers.

The prosecutor also said that the accused forged customers’ signature on their cards, purporting the money to have been withdrawn by the customers.

“Their fraudulent activity was noticed when customers that they claimed had collected their money came to ask for their money,” she said.

The offences contravened Sections 287 (7), 368 (1) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised)
Section 287 (7) and 368 (1) stipulates seven years imprisonment each while section 411 carries two years imprisonment for an offenders

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, granted the six accused bail in the sum of N250, 000 each with one surety the in like sum.

Elias said that the surety must be gainfully employed and must be a relative of the accused.

He adjourned the case until Sept. 24 for mention.
