Senator Uchendu's Second Term Bid: A Welcome Development by Nobody: 7:35pm On Sep 20, 2018

Senator Andrew Igbonule Uchendu's expression of interest to recontest the Rivers East Senatorial District seat in the 2019 election, is in all fairness and sense of responsibility, a most welcome development and in the best interest of all.

A non-cursory glance at the legislative trajectory of Rivers East Senatorial District in the last ten years, clearly reveals a vexing deficit in quality and effective representation for the people of the district.

Rather than improve, the situation continued to grow worse, plunging our people to lower limits in the Senate and country at large, with no one possessing the requisite experience, passion and courage to speak up for us.

In 2015, Senator Uchendu recieved a call by the people of Rivers East Senatorial District to represent them in the Red Chamber to reproduce the same effective representation that he offered the people of Emohua/Ikwerre Federal Constituency, during his remarkable years in the Green Chamber.

Typical of him, he obediently responded to the call to service and contested for the Rivers East Senatorial District elections. To him, it was a rescue and sacred job; someone needed to quickly fill in the void that was created by years of poor and ineffective representation borne out of unpopular political decisions.

Sadly, the result of the election became a subject of series of litigations that lasted a period of almost three years. Eventually, on August 24, 2017, he won the long legal tussle and was sworn in into the Senate on September 27, 2017, with barely 18 months left to see of the tenure of his office.

Despite this setback, Senator Uchendu, broke limitations and exceeded expectations by providing tremendous and impactful legislations that have, to a large extent, improved the lives of his constituents.

Ranging from bills seeking to reposition the youths for leadership positions in government institutions, to interventions in civil matters, and passionately pursuing the cause of his constituents and speaking up for them, Senator Uchendu has within his short time in the Red Chamber, covered the entire gamut of productive legislative business.

One remarkable feat that endeared me the more to this colossus of a man, is the impact that he made in the lives of 108 Federal Civil Servants who were recruited by the Federal Civil Service Commision (FCSC), in 2014, but were denied their salaries and other entitlements because for no fault of theirs, they were not captured on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

In a clear demonstration of his selflessness, Senator Uchendu, took upon himyself the burden of these Nigerians and moved a motion on the floor of the Senate for their immediate inclusion into the payment schedule of the FCSC and prayed that an investigation should be carried out to uncover the reason why they were not captured on the IPPIS, in the first place.

Even though his prayer was unanimously adopted by all his colleagues who were present at planery on that fateful day, January 30, 2018, to be precise, the "Alternative Voice", like so many people now call him, did not leave the matter to run cold. He mounted considerable pressure on the necessary quarters until FCSC finally enlisted for payment the 108 Federal Civil Servants who were starved of their salaries and allowances for over three years. I just love this man!

Given this astonishing performance and an array of others, especially within a very short period of time, one can boldly state that, he is deserving of more time, at least one more term, to consolidate on his achievements so far, and further impact lives through his remarkable intellectual prowess and outstanding legislative capacity.

I make bold to say without bias or sentiments that, Senator Uchendu's return bid to the Senate is in the greater interest of the good people of Rivers East Senatorial District. Let's give him the needed support, irrespective of political affiliation or ethnicity.
