mrvitalis: you are very wicked. Imagine supporting this evil govt. just because of little peanuts you do get. since you want comparison, lets start 1. Can you compare the minimum wage in USA to Nigeria. 2. Can you compare the salary receive by Usa officials to naija govt. Officials. I mean you people are very wicked. I never seen a dump Nigerian youths like you people. Other countries, youth are fighting to take over while in Nigeria, youth are just supporting evil govt. that care about their unborn generation. it shall never be well with you for seeing the truth yet lie against it. |

mrvitalis: That comparison to US may not work. Different indices , different contexts. Minimum wage in the US is $10 per hour for the lowest paying state . At 40 hours a week , that’s $1600 a month (not including overtime) and $19,200 a year ( for the lowest paying state) There are thousands of universities and colleges in the USA. One state in the US has more universities than the entire Nigeria. There are universities with fees as low as $10k per semester in the US. Ivy League schools in the USA are just eight in number. Why are you using Harvard as an example ? Is Havard meant for the masses ? A janitor in the US can afford to put himself/herself through a public or missionary college/university by taking advantage of a staggered payment option. Even if he wants to attend a slightly more prestigious university, a loan $15k per annum will suffice so long as he’s not a medical student. The loan is still less than his minimum wage of $19,200. Also you can be sure that after graduation , he’ll not be earning minimum wage again. The Nigeria FG wants to increase fees at public universities which is most affordable to the masses. A janitor in Nigeria earns 18k . That’s 216k a year. It means the said janitor will have to save 100% of his income for 2 and a half years just to pay 500k school fees for one year if he’s studying engineering. The minimum wage is a reflection of the broader health of the economy. It will be crippling on any charity organization or group that wants to take up the burden. Coming out of school with 4-6 million in debt to come and join the million of jobless graduates roaming the streets doesn’t make sense. But it will make sense to APC and it’s supporters sha. 4 Likes |

mrvitalis:stio comparing Nigeria to abroad. Stop it! Abroad has welfare packages, abroad has social services that take kids away when parents can not afford to care for them. What is the minimum wage abroad? Is it equivalent to 18,000 Nigeria? When you are talking, you don't just open your mouth and talk, you take into cognizance present realities, living standard and other things. Don't just say, "what obtains abroad" as if Nigeria has everything that abroad has and we just want cheap education. A nation that does not even have basic amenities like electricity and clean water is what you are comparing to abroad. Be reasonable abeg 3 Likes |

Y'all are branding the man's suggestions as evil but yet Nigerians cough out between 3.5 - 4million Naira for a masters program that last just a year in foreign universities...and yet you wonder why Nigerian universities are rated so poorly. Until we all come to the realisation that university education is not a right but a privilege we will continue to wallow in these glorified secondary schools paraded as universities in this country. Any parent that want qualitative education for their ward should be prepared to pay for it, there's no over emphasizing the fact that quality is expensive. |

Unsad: No they aren't actually. The problem is that we are fighting the symptom and not the cause by wanting university education to be dirt cheap. The REALITY is that even if Nigeria is corruption free, providing quality tertiary education for the millions of youth on this country is a daunting task. USA can't do it, neither UK. How then will we do it. Yet we want petrol subsidize and we also want electricity subsidised. Where will the money come from? Yet, we also need funds or roads, Rail, Ports etc. Theefore, like I said the real fight isn't about the cost of education, its about the amount of the minimum wage. That's where energy should be devoted to. We cannot continue to look at the past. The point is that even if The Pope becomes president if Nigeria today, he can only start to plot a future for this country based on where we are now - which is already inside a deep hole. And continuing subsidies won't get us out of it. The only subsidy I support is primary education (and possibly secondary) for All children. University is not compulsory and should not be subsidized. Neither should petrol and electricity or anything else for that matter. Getting the wage up is the real issue. A plumber or builder makes more money than a fresh graduate in UK. How come all our building and pop is now being done by Togo and Benin people? Cos our own people are not learning any trade? We've made that type of work to be for others and not us, even when many people in Nigerian universities today don't really have the aptitude to be there. And evidence of that can be found in the type of comments we see on social media. People can't argue a point without resulting to insults. It shows the quality of education they have had. |
