lol!...Kind of yes/no at the same time.

Yes, depending on the specialties like surgeons and the likes.

No, because now some States are now allowing Nurse Practitioners to take up most of those specialties like family medicine, Psychiatrics, internal medicine and pediatrics. So the need for doctors in these fields are not necessary.

If the answer is yes and no, then, even if there was indeed a shortage, it is not acute as that my brother put it. Something acute is always crystal clear- very obvious- such that there will be no doubts or arguments at all.

Debt is not a bad thing, so is it a good thing? I would say avoid it if you can. If it weren't that serious, there wouldn't be complaints about it by those who are drown in it.

Leverage is a bad thing only if you do not know how to use and manage it! How does one buy a house, car or any other major purchase or investment without debt? Short of stealing or having access to some sweet deal to make money not available to everyone else? You will need to slowly accumulate your earnings if you do not have access to debt. Access to leverage is one big differences between the western world and third world countries like Nigeria. In America, nobody waits to accumulate funds to make investments. You leverage, invest, make gains and pay back. You are not truly successful until money starts to work for you vs. you working for money. Think about this, in the U.S., personal income taxes can go as high as the 35% bracket. Capital gains tax is capped at 15%. In other words, if I work and I am paid $250k, I can potentially pay 35% in taxes. However, if I invest money in stocks and earn $250k gains, I pay 15% in taxes and the interest on my debt is also a tax shield.... tax deductible.

The people who drown into debts are the ones who got carried away and were not disciplined enough with borrowing money they could afford to be able to pay back without breaking a bank over a short period of time in order to avoid unnecessary interest.

There are some school loans that people can borrow who have very little to no interest as long as they continue to make the agreeable payments with the lender.

Lol thanks for the advice , i come to nigeria regularly so i know what to expect. I know it wont be easy but in the long term i stand to benefit wayy more than living here.

My parents didnt steal 1 kobo so i cant just abandon everything they have worked so hard for. Im speaking well beyond material things. All the connections that have been built over the years are invaluable.

For example i was able to exchange numbers with Innosun last time i was there and this is just oh mumsi said i should escort her for Nnewi. Can you imagine opportunities ive missed just by being here? I was supposed to get the contract to rebuild the innosun website

I wont even know where to begin to start making those type of connections here. As a black man i have to prove myself everywhere i go. Im technically a nobody here at best just a high wage earner , which is nice but i want more. For all my work there has to be more

My Canadian passport and my career will always be my fall backs just in case. But to be frank there are opportunities there , if everyone leaves who will change the country?

I've kinda lost hope

Nigeria emebigo undecided

Not always , some have medical debt that can run into the millions, it’s not someone fault if they get really sick. Some jobs are really strict and will let you go even for short term illnesses. Even with health insurance, some things may not be covered.

See, I live in the US so I know what I'm saying; I don't have to argue with you. If it was the way you said it, the rich would choose to live abroad instead. If you have some time, get a copy of AMERICANAH by Chimamanda Adichie, and find out why Obinze chose to go back to Nigeria with his wealth, and why Ifemelu later went back after acquiring US citizenship. If you could afford to buy a range rover and pay for it in cash at once in Nigeria, isn't that wealth? How many Americans can afford that? Is that what you will call "normal" in America. How about the paying of taxes? Do you know how that affects the rich? Why are you intrigued by the visa-free opportunity? First, if you are rich, no one will deny you a visa, so you can still visit the same countries that the visa-free citizen visits, so what exactly is the advantage of the visa-free chance you get? How many countries do you necessarily have to visit if you are rich, is everyone interested in travelling like that? Most times, the rich is going to these countries for one conference or the other which is by invitation, so who will deny them a visa?

Look, I want us to be very objective in our conversation here. There are a lot of things I could say, but I'm at work now. If you have some time, this discussion was already on Quora, it has over 100 answers: Is getting an American citizenship the best thing? Take time and read through, and it will explain a lot of things I wanted to tell you: https://www.quora.com/Is-having-a-child-born-into-U-S-citizenship-the-best-thing-that-could-happen-to-a-prospective-parent-from-another-nation

Don't get me wrong, getting an American citizenship is great; but this is only for the poor and middle-class. If you are rich, you don't need it. If you are Nigerian and RICH, you will rather live in Nigeria than abroad. Have you ever wondered why people like Dora Akunyili renounced their green cards? Or why Wole Soyinka would not apply for a citizenship, and not live in the US? Or why Obasanjo still keeps living in his Ogun State farm even after leaving politics, though he could still be embezzling money for America if he wanted? Or why Davido or Tiwa Savage would rather live in Nigeria even with their US citizenships- do you even think these guys will break through in music if they remained in the US?

well different strokes for different folks

Nigerians in particular like Nigeria because it's a LAWLESS COUNTRY

I mean, if you have the cash, there are SO MANY poor people around that are ready to be your lackey undecided

Exactly, America is stolen land ,so a good portion of Americans have benefited from this law. Almost 2 years into presidency he has not successfully ended daca, an executive order by Obama , he now wants to change part of the constitution , he must be out of his mind. Also the Nigerians supporting him must be out of their mind , either they have or children have benefited from this birthright citizenship.

Not at all.. but I just smile when I see people abroad displaying such passion to return home.. that used to be me until I saw things for myself.

I was born and brought up in Lagos.. had a wonderful childhood filled with amazing friends and family. Moved abroad as a teen and for many years dreamt of returning home. After getting my stay, I eventually returned home.. I was promised heaven and earth by friends and family.. although had already made up my mind that no matter what I face I will slug it out.. there's no place like home. etc..

I eventually learnt that INDEED there is no place like home because Nigeria is a special kind of hell.

The Nigeria of the 90s is not the Nigeria of today. Mediocity & superficiality is the order of the day. Everyone wants to "pepper dem" with nothing in their pockets. I personally know of a doctor who is often borrowing money from his junior brother abroad to repair his car, pay his rent etc.. A doctor abroad can never suffer in his life.. whether black white or asian..

When you see the way bankers dress ehn .. you will think they are gods on earth whereas their day to day job is parading up and down in the hot sun looking for "clients" for the bank. The salary is next to nothing. What other decent paying jobs are there for graduates?

In Nigeria you will see people renting decrepit apartments but driving flashy borrowed cars, stunting on instagram etc.. why? Because people respect you based on how you dress and not the content of your character..

Basic infastructure = zero..

Friends and family will famz you only when they have something to gain. Or if you simply appear to be a "big girl" or "big boy" A poor man has no friends in Nigeria.

To cut long story short. I have returned to my base. A country where I actually have a decent career, a place where you can save your earnings and live a decent life. A place where I feel no pressure to prove myself to anyone or "pepper dem".

At least here, I have made roots: decent friendships (most of them are fellow blacks like me) theres no food in Niaja that isnt here.. my family is here too.. what am I missing? I have learnt that home is where you make it.

People will encourage you to come home to "invest in opportunities" either because they want to gain something from you or they want you to come suffer the hardship there with them... but believe me, once money finishes .. your so called "loved ones" will leave you high and dry. Some will even scam you off the little you have left.

unfortunate

Chimamanda is married to my second cousin....true story.

I was just at their family house in the village this past June. So they are always coming in and out

interesting

I think we have rolled in similar circles in the for you to know some of these people

One thing I do know about anambra people tho is that they often have that magnet that pulls them back to that zone

Even a childhood friend who never lived much in Anambra state before (he is from nnokwa, I have followed his family there once to attend a trad wedding) is planning to build a house there and I'm like cheesy cheesy

Unfortunately, it's not like that for me because my parents kept me away from all that (I'm from imo btw)
that's why it seems odd to me that despite being of Igbo origins, the craze for "going home" is virtually non existent for me.

you see so many of them planning to go back to village this December and all, (planned weddings and all) so that might be the case for chimamanda and indeed many others.

Naija sweet , forget this thread. I went clubbin in enugu at that time period of my cousins 50th birthday (Ivara's Sister) and was blown away. The flexing no be here oh. My uncle was even telling me how theres no point in leaving , he just finished an estate in awka.

Funny story that day the Governor of Anambra , Imo and Enugu plus their deputies and aides were all there. See big men dey drag politics about how they want Buhari to be president. I was in the midst of power quietly sipping on hennesy.

My point is those connections are seldom made here on some shit. They just finished mayoral politics in here in Vancouver. No single non white even won a mayoral seat for any of the cities.

Really?...and here I thought they are claiming that Canada is a very immigrant-friendly country?

What about the Asians living there?

true

a lot of Asians live in BC

but then.......

It's all abt Good governance

Canada did have a black governor General of Haitian origin in the past

Lagos on the other hand will most likely NEVER have an igni governor, nor those communities in Ebonyi with significant Hausa populations ever have a Hausa man represent that plsvd despite the fact that it is aboki that habit in these places

Whatever to them.

They can give up their US citizenship and move to those European countries they can still acquire citizenship from.

The population of America is more than enough they can even handle now.

Getting rid of some the 300 millions plus US population will not be felt.
