by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Background: The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), with headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria, invites applications for a Food Science/Technology Expert (APO Position).

IITA is an Africa-based international research-for-development organization, established in 1967, and governed by a board of trustees. Our vision is to be one of Africa’s leading research partners in finding solutions for hunger and poverty. We have more than 100 international scientists based in various IITA stations across Africa. This network of scientists is dedicated to the development of technologies that reduce producer and consumer risk, increase local production, and generate wealth. We are supported primarily by the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR, www.cgiar.org).

Responsibilities: The Food Science/Technical Expert will be part of a team working towards sustainable production and utilization of cassava and soybean. She/he will work towards improving our understanding of the physical and chemical basis for the differences in suitability of cassava and soybean for food preparation. The incumbent will develop value-added cassava and soybean based products that are suitable for domestic use (competitive with imported products) and export, investigate shelf life of novel food products in consultation with processing industries and user groups; characterize cassava and soybean varieties for specific desired functional and nutritional quality traits; document traditional/indigenous processing and utilization practices and improve traditional processing technologies, in terms of efficiency and product quality. In addition the incumbent will promote newly developed processed products through training of trainers and linking with the private sector and other stakeholders to broaden the consumer and industrial base for these crops and to contribute more stabilized market prices. This position reports to the Food Scientist who also oversees the Crop Utilization Laboratory.

Duty Station: IITA-Mozambique, Nampula.

Qualifications & Experience: The successful candidate should possess a Masters (or equivalent) degree in food science or food technology with relevant experience in food quality assessment and product development. Familiarity with foods from cassava and/or soybean would be an advantage. He/she should have the ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a cross-cultural environment and also be able to spend long hours per day working and/or traveling in-country. Fluency in English (both spoken and written) is required, while a working knowledge of Portuguese will be an advantage.

General Information: The initial appointment is for one year extendible to three years. IITA offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.

The position is for developing countries nationals only while candidates must not be more than 32 years of age at the time of applying. Nationals of the duty station are not eligible. Please check the list of eligible countries on the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Applications: Applications including curriculum vitae and names and addresses of three referees should be addressed to the Human Resources Manager. Please complete our online application form.

Application deadline: The position will remain open until 1 May 2007.

IITA is an equal opportunity employer and particularly welcomes applications from women candidates

Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted
