Hello,
Is there a direct way to contact you? I have some questions.
Re: My Experience In NYSC Orientation Camp, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State by nonye6194: 4:44pm On Dec 03, 2018
The weekend before resuming at my PPA, I began a UKHSE certification training with novelle. Here's a bit about UKHSE for those who don't know what it's about;

HSE (which is acronym for Health, Safety and Environment) is a course provided by the British international safety organisation (BISO) to teach, train and certify employees on the safe practices associated with the workplace, the individual and the environment.
In some advanced nations, Safety certifications is a requirement for a couple of professions but down here in Nigeria, it has been adopted to be only for the engineering profession alone. Individuals from other disciplines undergo it still but each class set is usually made of (almost) entirely engineering trainees, just like mine.

For fresh graduates seeking entry level jobs after their service year, certain skills and knowledge (aside the first degree obtained) together with their certificates is key to standing out from others. UKHSE certification is definitely one of such certifications for a graduate.

The certification comes in levels ranging from 1-9. The levels 1,2&3 is usually what is expected of a graduate. Once an employee, one can then pursue the rest of the levels certification individually or the firm could sponsor that. The first three levels costs about 45k (19500 for corpers) and levels 4-9 for 240k (200k for corpers).

So I gisted Emi and Ru about the training ahead of the inaugural day and they were both on board with the plan. Ru is one of my school mates that was also posted to Lagos but she had her orientation in Ondo camp due to the last changes by nysc.
So we all cleared our weekend plans ahead of the training day and when it came, it started with a torrential rain that fell all morning until noontime. When it rains in most parts of Lagos, movements becomes more difficult for commuters. So Emi bailed on us early that morning because of the rain, but Ru and I made up our minds to attend nonetheless. I left home at about 7am and getting into the rain, I realised I had made a huge mistake.

Rain showed me shege that morning eh cry

Buses were scattered all over bus stops with none moving. To get a bus headed your way, you'll have to stand in the crazy rain until one comes along and picks you. It was so confusing for me that I ended up in a bus headed to Mushin, instead of Ikeja along grin. When I realised my error we were already in Mushin angry, so I had to pay extra fee to get back and head on to the right destination. Even Google maps wasn't helping that morning as glo network deserted me long ago. Las las, I got to the venue all drenched and joined the few others already there to wait for the session to begin.

When our trainer arrived, he did the normal introductions and we kick-started with the inaugural training of the day. The training provider is novelle training centre, a licenced and renowned firm I'd known for their excellence in trainings/certifications.
Towards the end of the day's training, Ru arrived and joined up for the rest of the last session. At the end of the day, we were told the difference between novelle issued certifications to other trainers' certification.
In addition to the UKHSE 1,2&3 certificates, novelle issues two certifications (Basic first aid and risk assessment/Environmental Impact Assessment from the DPR) which gives their training a unique edge over their competition. To me, that was a cool addition which I wasn't even aware of before now cool.

Since we were both on board with going ahead with the training, Ru and I made payments in full for the levels 1,2&3 and we were shown the sample certificates which is attached below for those interested. After then, we dispersed for the next weekend.

The out of camp episodes are slow to be updated because work and Lagos stress wee not allow somebody to have small time to rest, talk less of writing sad. Especially now I resumed work and it's been hella hectic.

Even with the (not so close) proximity of my PPA to my residence, one gats to wake up and prepare early cry.

Unless you want Traffic to make you late (which I've been several times angry )

Nevertheless, I'll still try to keep y'all posted wink. Hopefully, more in this Yuletide season.

Speaking of Yuletide sef grin, a couple of friends I made here on NL are planning several tours around attractive sites (such Nike art gallery, Badagary history museum, Kalakuta museum, Lekki conservation centre, etc) here in Lagos.

We're hoping to begin from next weekend and more after that, consecutively or not.

Anyone with interests to join on the tour living around Lagos can send a WhatsApp message to zero seven zero eight nine four eight seven two five zero for plans and etc.

Suggestions to other places is welcomed too

CONTINUATION FROM LAST POST OF 2018

The month of September was drawing to a close yet the reposting I applied for at the beginning of the month was yet to reflect on my dashboard online. By now, I was even thinking about it. Emy and I applied for this sturvs within 24 hours of each other and she got related in less than 72 hours. And it's almost been a month and I haven't been reposted too cry .

The time came for another monthly clearance and I headed to Ikeja to do the exercise, without any document. I met the LGI after thumbprinting and he fed me with the same b.s. I wasn't having any of it this day so I demanded to know the status of my reposting. Going through their books, I found out that my application had been lying untouched in their office since I submitted it to them.

Kai this one bin pain me sad
I could've saved myself the wasted monies used to check on my reposting to buy land undecided

I took the file and went to meet LGI to register my displeasure but this uncle asked me to return it back to where I picked it . He didn't even seem to care about the importance of my issue. Instead of creating a scene and changing it for him there, I jejely did as he said and went home angrily.

The month of October came and I wasn't even bothered about the reposting anymore since I have a PPA I'm already working at. Infact, I was more focused on my HSE certification exams that were coming up.
The examination day eventually came and I sat for it with Emy and Ru. Ru was rearranged to another hall and I was worried for her since she didn't prepare enough for the exams. I didn't know that was a luck for her on a low-key since the hall had no invigilator and babe brought her training manual along wink grin.
For Emy and I, it was merely a walk in the park since I was adequately prepared for it and didn't encounter any problem answering any of the questions. We finished and I was hoping for a good result.

We left the hall and went to buy bóle and celebrate. I wasn't in the mood to eat mine outside so I had it packaged and kept inside my mini bag. On getting home, the oyel af stained my books, wallet (including monies and ID cards grin). I still chop the bóle with new oyel cheesy

You think eez me you want to do

It was a good day today cool

Now I was done with the HSE certification exams, I had a bit of time on my hand so I decided to go back to my former LGA reposting matter. I didn't check my dashboard anymore since the application hadn't even left the LGA for the secretariat where changes would be made online. I called the LGI severally and my calls weren't picked, as usual. So I decided to visit the LGA on a day I'll surely meet the LGI on seat. I settled for Monday.

This time, I was ready to give him any craze he wanted from me embarassed . I was resolved to do whatever would make me relocated to my present employer and LGA before the new week runs out.

So on 22nd October, I skipped work to visit the LGA and like I guessed correctly, the LGI was around. I narrated my issue to him that has been lingering on since 3rd September and by the time I finished, he was practically calls and sorting for my application himself. After several checks, it was discovered that my application and file had been sent to the secretariat, but for another reason.

Excuse me, say what

These people sent my file alongside files of corpers that were meant to pass out next month for whatever reason I don't know. Just imagine how you'll apply for something and it's processed for something else angry.

With this new discovery, I had to make a fresh application since they weren't even sure of the whereabouts of the one in Secretariat.

Just negodu undecided

I had to re-apply using photocopies I came with. After I finished, it was authenticated and he advised me to take it to the state secretariat in Surulere today and ensure it was worked on the same day. I took his advice and went with a fellow corper with similar issue. We got to Surulere and followed the procedure we were told. We finished up and went home after we were assured our problems would be sorted before the week runs out.

And just like the official assured me at the secretariat, I checked my dashboard on Friday and the new reposting letter was there. I heaved a sigh of relief.

Finally!

Looking back on what I went through for this, I realised how ignorant we can be at the execution of our jobs, even when such calls for urgent attention. It took NYSC 40 working days to repost me from my former PPA/LGA to the present ones.

Messed up system, everywhere undecided

(the new letter below)

Re: My Experience In NYSC Orientation Camp, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State by nonye6194: 4:37pm On Jan 22, 2019
The next Monday I went to my PPA and submitted the new letter and received an acceptance letter, plus clearance letters (for the previous missed months and present month) for my new LGA. The next day, I proceeded to my new LGA (Oshodi-isolo) for the first time for documentation.

The LGA with the highest Agberos in Lagos.

Who did I even offend angry

When I arrived at the LGA and located the NYSC office, I met a locked up place . I sha later met some corpers who on inquiring from them, I learnt that everyone went for daily CDS group meeting at the legislative hall and no one would be attended to until they're done there and come back.

I never even land, I don dey collect frustration. Haba now sad

These people took like three hours o and it wasn't funny waiting for anyone for me. But what can I even do sef? Nada!
When they finished and returned, I completed the registration and was ready to leave before the aunty official told me to come back tomorrow because it's general CDS day for everyone

I couldn't even vex at this point, I wanted to go home and sleep. And that was exactly what I did.

So the next day, I went back to the LGA a little after 10 am to meet the a mammoth crowd of corpers. Apparently, I had arrived late even though the meeting hasn't even started. After the meeting, I learnt from my former OBS colleague, May that one has to show up very early for any exercise so as to put down his or name which would be used for thumbprinting either for monthly clearance or monthly general CDS attendance. And for the monthly general CDS (like todays'), attendance stops by 9 am shocked.
And I came by past 10 am.

Are you telling me that a these hustle is for nothing angry

Lemme even rant about the meeting itself lol. The exercise reminded me of SAED lectures back in camp, almost everyone (including staff) don't pay attention to the proceedings of the meeting. You are either sleeping, on their phone or gisting with a friend. Even with the public address system they used to address us, I couldn't pick anything from the speakers. It didn't take up to an hour and the meeting for over.

*Relieved*

But this was where the real wahala started.

Everyone started scampering around and joining lines I didn't know which to follow. I was so confused and didn't even want to stress myself, so I kukuma remained on my seat let them kee themselves dia grin. It was time for the real 'attendance' which was a thumbprinting exercise which is done based on which CDS groups you belong to.
Before long, the hall got decongested and conducive for me to do mine so I finally found my line and queued up to follow do my own. When it reached my turn, the auntie checked the attendance and couldn't find my name. On finding out from me that I actually came late, she made me to pack a dozen seats from the hall to the store just to write my name and do the thumbprint.

Since I didn't want to jeopardise things here, I kukuma did if and returned to thumbprint. My people, the scanner refused to read any of my fingers o

cry

After all these stress. Which type of winch is this sef angry

I tried several times to no avail. That was when the lady told me since I was new to the LGA, my data isn't yet on their base so I had to put down my name with other new guys on a different list for same issue.

Why didn't she inform me of the other list instead of giving me high BP sad

The next day was a new month (November) which marked the beginning of monthly clearance 1st - 7th. So technically I could go to the LGA the next day and do my clearance. But this would make it my fourth consecutive day visiting the place. I decided to take a break and do it the next week.

I don miss work three days in a stretch and you me to make it four? Una want make dem sack me ni grin

Before now, news of the impending NLC strike was all over the place and the LGA had already sent out a notice to us during the general CDS meeting that everyone should ensure to do theirs before the 7th which coincides with the date set for beginning of the industrial action.

So the next Monday, I carried myself again back to the LGA and did my clearance, attaching the previous lost months inside too. I got there a little after 8 am only to find out I was #116 on the list. We never even reach #50 for the place.
To make matters more serious, this list would be used to clear each person according to their respective number sad.

Ayam already tayad of these people and their 'lists' o angry

Since I wasn't leaving soon, I found a seat and put on my earphones to listen to J Cole's 'Friday night lights' and 'the come up' mixtapes. About two hours later after the clearance started, it got to my turn. I did my thing and went home to sleep.

Now to the gist of the day cool

(This is actually the first post I'm doing this year, as the previous ones I made were backlogs from last year I couldn't post for some reasons I am sorry for. So I'm gonna backtrack to noteworthy sturvs from where I stopped to keep y'all up to date with this scam of a service life I'm living undecided )

Back at my PPA, it's the same story everyday;

-Come to work before 8 (i.e. if Ikotun -Isolo traffic doesn't finish somebody angry )

-Arrive at the factory and take small nap if I arrive before work starts (I oversleep sometimes. And nobody will wake me grin )

-Join and do small 'soft work'

-Take rest from lunchtime at 1pm until closure at 5pm (this is the time I usually use to prepare posts for y'all, surf the web or mostly sleep grin )

-End of the month, collect salary and bone for everybody grin

-Repeat

It's funny how even with my wayo lifestyle, my salary hasn't been reduced ever (like other staff) at the end of the month. Even my supervisor and factory managers get theirs reduced o.

I call it perks of being a 'kofament pikin' tongue.

Plus, I don't earn same thing they collect so free me abeg. I sort of use this my theory of 'untouchable salary' to take a day or two off per week. The highest question I've answered concerning skipping work is usually:

'what happened corper, I didn't see you yesterday'

My answer: CDS (or SAED) o sir/ma. They want to kill somebody sad grin
