The hot sun did not deter them from attending the meeting.On the contrary,it had practically turned the men of Ugwumba into 'hot'heads. Ever since the maimed body of Ezenna had washed up on their riverbank 2days ago there had been speculations that there would be war.
Ezenna had left for the market of Orieukwu in the neighbouring village of Umuichi a week ago to sell his farm produce.When nightfall came and he hadn't returned his wife went and alerted the chief...

The chief had assured her that her husband must have finished his sales late and must have opted to sleep over at the chiefs house.After the assurance,she went home.By noon the following day, when it had become clear that he was missing the youths were assembled to go look for him.They youths had searched the whole forests in Ugwumba to no avail.They decided to venture into Umuichi but were stopped at the river which bordered the two villages by the border guards of Umuichi...

The men of Ugwumba were outraged but could do nothing.The men of Umuichi assured them that they would search by themselves in their village and the youths of Ugwumba went back home.After a week Ezennas body had washed up on the riverbank of Ugwumba.The council of elders were quickly summoned and two days later the youths were called together.

The village square was packed.Every able bodied man made sure he was present.When ogbuagu the chief was certain that every one was present,he stood up and the bickering stopped."My brothers" he bellowed,"The people of Umuichi take us as fools but they have underestimated us!". "Yes!" came the massive response.'They have pushed us to the wall this time around'. 'Yes,they have' the men shouted. 'This act of theirs calls for war,and we the men of Ugwumba are not known for cowardice..'

'blood!? They answered in unison
'then blood u shall get..'Ogbuagu boomed.That was the magic word. they youths all rushed home and got back with their sharpened matchetes.They started chanting war songs while heading for Umuichi.They were clearly out for blood as each man brandished his sword like he was beheading an unseen opponent.On getting to the boundary river,the men of Umuichi were startled by the sight before them.

On sighting the men of Ugwumba battle ready the men of Umuichi fled.Before the attackers could wade acoss the river the defenders had widened the pace between themselves.But the attackers were hell bent on drawing blood so they marched angrily cutting down every fruit tree in their path and killing any unfortunate person who happened to cross their path.
Meanwhile the people of Umuichi had been warned of the coming danger so the hastily prepared and moved out for battle.

The attackers were suprised to see that the men of Umuichi had assembled so quickly that the halted.Ogbuagu walked out and spoke:'The murderers have already prepared to attack us despite being the ones to cast the first stone'
'Nonsense' was the reply from the defenders side as a bulky,well built man in his early 40' stepped out.
'I am Ezeka' he said beating his chest 'the chief of Umuichi.Am ordering you to stand down or face our wrath'
'Stand down?'Ogbuagu sneered 'stand down?'...

'We will only stand down when you and your mens head are on a pike' Ogbuagu yelled.'Men! cut them down!!' He brandished his matchete and started towards Ezeka.His men followed suit and ran.Ezeka brandished his sword and shouted '50 Cowries for the man with the highest heads'.His men yelled and rushed out.There was a loud clang of steel against stelel as both armies clashed.The men swung there matchetes with reckless abandon as screams erupted almost immediately....

Ezeka pulled his matchete and swiped at the first opponent he met,he held the next opponent by the hair and beheadedhim.He lifted the mans head and gave a blood curdling scream.The attackers quickly regrouped behind Ogbuagu.'Your're a murderer' Ogbuagu yelled.But Ezeka smirked ahead.'5 male slaves for his head' Ogbuagu screamed and rushed for battle.The defenders ran towards the attackers as they started their battle again.But the tides had tipped to the side of the attackers as...

the attackers wanted to draw blood from Ezeka.Two of them made it to Ezeka only to be cut down by his sword.Ogbuagu weaved through the men and made it to Ezeka.Both men paused and looked loathingly at themselves.Then without warning Ogbuagu dived for Ezeka.He was in mid~thrust when he saw Ezeka's sword going straight for his neck.He stopped in the nick of time as the sword grazed his neck to draw a thin streak of blood on his neck.The momentum with which Ezeka had swung his sword had.

...thrown him to his side hereby exposing his back to Ogbuagu.He swung quickly and slashed his back as Ezeka gave out a shout of pain.The fighting men stopped and looked towards the source of the noise.Ezeka who had fallen on one knee after the cut stood up and faced his opponent.'You shall pay for that'he growled.He swung his sword at Ogbuagu who in turn dived back.He grabbed Ogbuagu by the neck and sunk his sword into his thigh.He shouted at the top of his voice in pain.A horn sounded from...

...behind the fighting men.They all looked up and saw another bunch of warriors approaching.'The warriors of Akwuna are here' one of the attackers shouted happily.Ezeka quickly dropped the injured Ogbuagu to the ground and stabbed him in the chest.'Nooo' his men screamed in unison as the once again ran into battle.Men on both sides fell even before clashing.They stopped in suprise as more men fell.They looked back and saw that the men of Akwuna were firing arrows randomly into them....

Pandemonium broke out as every one made for the shelter of the trees.But many more were cut down by the flying arrows.When the arrows seemed to have ceased flying the men of Akwuna marched in and cut down every man they saw.Ezeka fuming with rage dashed out and started fighting the new invaders.As if on cue the fighting broke out once more.'Stop!' a shrill voice ordered as the fighting died down.'You all are to drop your weapons or die on the spot'
'Why should we do so' Ezeka growled

'Because you're surrounded' The shrill voice answered.The men looked around and saw the warriors of Akwuna had completely surrounded them and faced their arrows towards them.'You wont kill your men' Ezeka said.'I would do anything to achieve victory' An armed,sleek man said as he stepped out.
'Ikemba?'Ezeka spoke looking dashed
'In the flesh and blood' was the reply
'What do you think your doing?'
'Ending a war'
'You...'Ezeka rushed for him while Ikemba stood his ground watching calmly.

Ezeka was a few paces close to Ikemba before a barrage of arrows were set loose on his legs.He tripped and yelled in intense pain.'Drop your weapons'Ikemba spoke softly yet authoritatively ignoring Ezeka who winced in pain at his foot.The men of Ugwumba now leaderless complided and the men of Umuichi followed suit albeit nonchalantly.Ikemba smiled and spoke to the nearest of his men "Round them all up"."Chief what about this one?"the man asked Ikemba while pointing at the groaning Ezeka.

"Tend to his wounds and lock him up with the other prisoners"."..And Urasi" Ikemba said
"Chief?"
"Make sure they are properly guarded"
"Yes chief"
"The rest of the men not on guard duty should follow me i think it is time we had a tour of our sister tribe"

Back home at Ugwumba the elders were getting agitated."They battle should be over by now" one of them said.
"Nduka,calm down.Our men have never lost a battle,not yet anyway but.."

"Look here Ukaji" another elder Agu spoke up "just because your a coward does not mean our youths are one.You.."
"Shut up, you pig what do ..." Ukaji started
"Me Pig, I will..."
"Its enough!" Onowu the prime minister shouted."This is not a market place you can come and haggle insults anyhow"
"Tell Agu oo.He started it." Agu was about to retort when a woman rushed into the meeting."What is this?" Onowu asked standing."Speak up woman" Agu barked."My elders,the warriors of Akwuna are..."

"Yes? They are what?"Agu cut in."Agu keep quiet!" Onowu barked."Yes woman,go on." "They warriors of Akwuna are headed to our village battle ready". "Are you sure?" Nduka asked.The woman nodded in the affirmative."Lets march out and meet them"Onowu said walking out. "Meet them and do what? Talk them to death?" Ukaji asked alarmed. "No,we are going to meet them and hand over your wife to them" Agu replied sarcastically."Bia (come) Agu are you out of your senses?" "Its enough both of you

Ikemba continued walking with the few warriors with him till he entered the village.He was suprised to see that the women and children had gathered at the village square like they were expecting them.He stopped and looked around.On seeing no men he spoke up..."

"We are here" a frail looking old man with a stick said as he stepped out of the crowd.A fat man,a short well built man and a thin tall man followed behind him."We the elders of Ugwumba" the frail looking man spoke up indicating himself and the men with him "have come to welcome our brothers from Akwuna.We are sorry for the condition by which you were welcomed but we were not aware you were coming and our king has left for war..."
"Speaking of war..."

Ikemba interrupted "...thats why we are here". "You have come to help?" Someone asked from the crowd."Yes,we have".Jubilation broke out in the crowd as the women started shouting with joy."Our husbands safety are now assured" One said."The men of Umuichi will not know what him them" another shouted."They shall pay for Ezenna's death" yet another said as the babbling continued."We are very much grateful"the frail looking man said."Tell me old man,what is your name?"Ikemba asked amused
