It will be only foolish of Emmanuel Macron to return those artworks and also a gross violation of the French law that prohibits the government from returning State property.

Where will they even be kept?

In the Oba's palace I guess; where one of his wives can break them a fit of rage or where one of his sons or palace guards can sell them off.
They can even be gifted to politicians who come visiting.

Nigeria is not ripe for such returns.
The West should continue keeping our artifacts.
They are safer with them.

Ordinary Abacha's money that was returned can not be accounted for.
Let alone these artworks.

Oba please just face your Gelegele seaport and forget about these artifacts.

dainformant:
Report has it that the president of France, Emmanuel Macron has agreed to immediately return 26 African artworks claimed by Benin, Edo state, Nigeria.

It was gathered that the decision on Friday came shortly after Macron received a report detailing how former colonisers can return looted artworks to Africa.

According to AFP, government officials from Ethiopia to Senegal eagerly awaited the report, commissioned by Macron and compiled by French art historian, Benedicte Savoy, and Senegalese economist Felwine Sarr.

It recommends that the thousands of items in French museums taken without consent during the colonial period be returned to the continent.

Unless it can be proven that the objects were obtained legitimately, they should be returned to Africa permanently, the report's authors say.

French law currently forbids the government from ceding state property, regardless of how it was obtained.

Or Benin Republic?

France will return 26 works of art to Benin more than a century after it took them from the west African nation.
President Emmanuel Macron ordered the pieces returned "without delay" to the former French colony, according to a report commissioned by the French government.
The pieces have been in France's possession for 126 years, ever since they were taken from the palace of King Behanzin, who was deposed and exiled when France claimed the region as a protectorate in 1894.
Macron's decision to return the artworks stems from a report authored by French historian Bénédicte Savoy and Senegalese writer and academic Felwine Sarr. French collections now house at least 90,000 pieces originating from sub-Saharan Africa, the report said, with around 70,000 works just in the Quai Branly -- a museum featuring art indigenous to Africa.
It recommended that the French government return stolen artifacts to their countries of origin.
"These works can be presented to the Beninese public and to the international public as part of the ambitious project of museums carried by the Republic of Benin," the statement said.
And these 26 pieces may just be the start.
The report suggested a three-phased approach. The first, the return of "several symbolic pieces whose return has been requested fro a long time by various African nations." Then, an international inventory of stolen pieces. And the final phase would include African nations submitting claims of restitution.
The Elysée Palace said there will be a meeting at the start of 2019 between African and European nations to develop a new policy on the exchange of stolen artifacts.

Re: President Emmanuel Macron To Return Benin Artworks 'Stolen' From Benin Republic by Nobody: 4:09pm On Nov 24, 2018
Just to inform the miseducated fools running their mouths. Benin Kingdom is a large precolonial African country ruled by a King, Omo n'Oba n'Edo. The capital of that Kingdom is called Benin City. The name of the people of the kingdom is Edo and their language is also called Edo. The french colony formerly called dahomey changed its name after independence (the 70's) and chose the name Benin from Benin Kingdom. Benin Kingdom also gave its name to the bight of Benin several hundred years ago. This piece of education is given to you for free, now some trolls will go to their graves with a nonempty brain.

Some people here are confused. It's Benin "Republic, the country. . .not Benin "Edo " the state.

The British took our own Artwork cause they were our colonial masters. . .while the French took Benin Republic's artwork because they were the colonial masters there. .hence the French speaking.

1-I used the word "colonial masters" so everyone could understand what I was saying. . .calm down. We all know they were invadeea looters and pillagers.

2- For who's info? Every student who studied history knows an Empire is basically a ruled kingdom. .just as the Benin Empire was, so why ate you for your info-ing me?

3- Don't play dumb, if you're smart as you feel, it shouldn't be hard for you to know that France would be returning stolen arts to a couple they they once ruled. .and since the Benin Empire had problems with the British (not France), therefore losing thousands of Artworks. . so which other Benin would it be in west Africa, if not your country's neighbour?

Don't bother replying.
