I grew up in a society where any career you chose that doesn't begin with going to higher institution is discouraged. My parents made a mistake believing going to school is the ultimate ingredient for success and that made me ignored my talents, as a result of that; it slowed down my success pace.

A friend of mine discovered his son's boxing talent when they were playing and his 7 year old son gave him an outstanding punch grin. He never saw the negative side of it but he got inspired and enrolled his son in a boxing school. Today, the little boy is becoming something spectacular.

We often ignore the God given talents of our children and selfishly choose what we want for them. A teenager who doesn't know anything about Mathematics or English but she is a good dancer will be seen as a potential slayqueen or wayward person. The parents will ignore the fact that she is already gifted and her gift is not morally wrong.

Education is not everything, for me education is Plan B to success. The plan A is your talent or gift. That is why those with talents and gifts will always survive in a country where employment rate is poor especially Nigeria.

If I discover my son to be a good football player, I will make sure I get to the nearest football academy to enrol him as soon as possible. grin

Una weldone! cheesy

Very true.
One of the deputy governors in Nigeria was my classmate, he stole from almost everyone in my class. He later became a yahooboy, his father encouraged him to join politics, today he is doing very well. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

dear parents, that talent your child or ward exudes, please never i repeat never take it for granted for if taken seriously it would surely and definitely put food on their table and he wouldn’t ever have to work a day in his/ her life

Thats our greatest problem and it starts from the most sensitive time of our life.... Too bad many if not all parents fail in this aspect....

Last last you're on your own to discover your talent and prove to the world that it is SO!!!

Good point but don't rule out education at all!

Parents can also study their kids to know their strong point in academics. I am a victim!
I was d best in intro tech in jss and tech drawing in sss and my flair n love for architecture grew (though I was also good in other science subjects). When jamb form was bought for me, I applied for chose architecture first choice. Pops saw it and screamed that that course is worthless that anyone can design to cut long story short he forced me to study any engineering course. Today I feel kinda lost (though am doing well as an engineer), like am not living d life i ought to be living career wise.

I know many people that has lost their way because their parents forced them to study courses other than what their passion is and are regretting obeying them.

I my kid has a passion for lets say music and wants to study it in uni, I will give him my 100% support!

As much as being talented and following that path is good, education rooted in exposure and enlightenment is still the best policy. Too bad most Nigerians get educated but lack the other two ingredients, that's why we are still where we are undecided

School is not really everything. Parents are too hard on their kids, they want their kids to always top the class, put them in extra moral classes. These kids are suffocating.

How do you allow your kids to be in school from 8am-To 6pm and you're happy as a parent. You're killing the kid.

As for me, as long as my kids are done with their secondary education, whatever they decide is cool with me. If they gonna go to the University or not, so far they make good use of their time, it's all right.
And while they are growing up academically, no extra classes angry

I hate it so much with passion. Let the kids grow.

Exactly! If parents had paid attention, they would have discovered that their girls were developing olosho aka slay mamarism talent and stopped it. They would have saved us decent men from this scourge.

How to find a wife in the midst of these ladies is my headache now.

Facing the same here...
Don't have the guts to tell them at home esp mum who's expecting a physio that I've written well over 64 songs and the musical passion is really strong...
The whole system is all messy, God save us!
