Strange Origin Of 9 Everyday Objects We Use

#1. Viagra

You must have heard of Viagra right? It is a drug that was initially manufactured to treat High Blood Pressure.

However, trial studies unveiled that the pill wasn’t effective. But patients reported erectile dysfunction as one of the side effects, this is how it became a popular erectile dysfunction pill for men.

#2. Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola was initially advertised for its health effect. As a matter of fact, the creator an Atlantic Pharmacist, John Pemberton Claimed that the drink cures everything including nervousness, depression, morphine addiction etc.

#3. Treadmill

A treadmill is a popular machine for workout exercise. Did you know that it was initially created to punish prisoners in the United Kingdom and United State?

During the 19th century, prisoners in Britain and US were made to climb the spokes of “Tread-Wheel” for hours.

The Tread Wheel was actually a large paddle wheel, it was used to either pump water or mill corn. This is why people started calling it a treadmill.

#4. High Heel

Did you know that High Heel was mainly for warriors in the battlefield? Before high heel became a symbol of feminity, high heel footwear was used by warriors in battle.

The Heel allowed Persian Horsemen to securely stand in their stirrups, thus giving them stability to use their bow and arrows.

#5. Sanitary Pad

Sanitary pad started as badges for soldiers during the first world war. It was actually the idea of Kimberly – Clark Corporation that led to the creation of Sanitary pad that is still being used today.

Cotton shortage during the war led Kimberly-Clark Corporation to develop Sanitary Pad as a cheaper and more absorbent alternative. This was how sanitary pad came into existence.

#6. Microwave Oven

Microwave ovens are products of radar. After the second world war, Percy Lebaron Spencer was working with Radar Technology when he noticed that a chocolate bar he had in his pocket melted due to Radiation.

#7. EyeLiner

Eyeliner is an old-timey form of sunglasses. The ancient Egyptians were among the first people to wear eyeliner. They didn’t do it to adorn themselves, rather reduce the sun’s glare.

It was also used for prevention against bacterial infection. However, eyeliner has become mainly for adornment in recent time.

#8. Chainsaws

Chainsaws were invented to help during childbirth. As weird as it may seem, Chainsaws weren’t meant for trees, rather for human bones.

In the 18th Century, two Scottish Doctors invented the first medical chainsaws and was used to saw through the pelvic bone during difficult childbirths.

#9. Bubble Wrap

Bubble Wrap was invented to be used as wallpaper. After its invention in the late ’50s, the inventors – Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes never thought it could be used as wrapping material.

However, IBM started using Bubble Wrap to wrap their expensive computer for safe transport. This was how bubble wrap became a popular wrapping material.
