Truth is the new hate speech. People only agree to what they want to hear.

I have lawyer friends, lots of them diversified, got relevant certifications and experience. Before that diversification, better suffer knack them. There is no course that isn't overrated in Nigeria sef, but for a professional course like Law, its own overrated deserves Headies Award.
My sister, make we leave them. Years down the line, they will locate this thread and say "you were right"!

To the OP, there is no silver bullet and pretty much every view expressed on here is valid.

In my own experience, I believe God just wanted to elevate me. Most people will call it luck. You need to work hard as a student and even more so as a lawyer

Try and graduate with 2.1. Work hard on your diction and writing. If you are in Lagos, start looking for internships in big law firms before you get to law school.

Get a mentor who has made it. The person does not necessarily need to be a much older person. There are young lawyers making waves in corporate practice in top law firms in Lagos.

If you have the means, after 2-3 years of practice, try and get an LLM from the US, Canada or the UK.

Above all keep improving yourself as a person and who knows what will happen.

All the best. The profession is not for the fainthearted.
Having said all that, I know mates who left law and have become hugely successful in business.

May God guide you.

You didn't make it doesn't mean others won't too. You entered the profession with a wrong mindset that's why you're saying things like this.

Someone in the profession cannot look up to people like you as a motivator or role model. Besides, who says law is a profession where you enter and start to reap the benefits as soon as you get a job? The only problem right now is the pay and it's not a fault of anyone really because that's just how messed up the country really is.

But I have never seen anyone who has put in work in the profession for 10 years plus and didn't start reaping the benefits. Maybe it's not your passion after all.
Sadly, a friend of mine is 14 years at the bar and has been a source of discouragement anytime I meet with him because of the state of things. He is really a dogged lawyer.

Making wealth is by chance. You only increase your chances through hardwork which is still on probability

Queenfav was absolutely right in her previous thread. Law practice is always there for you as a lawyer. If you have opportunity to venture into any legitimate money making scheme, please do. You can go back to law practice anytime and build up. There is nothing like passion when the intestines are rioting

u have said it all... If i knew i won't be practicing law, I wouldn't have bothered.
You can still practise it in future when you have made a lot of money and established yourself. Unless you don't want to.
Another good thing about legal profession is that there is no age limit to get a job, you don't have retiring age, unless you want to retire. Former police IG, M D Abubakar, after his retirement from police force at 65, he went ahead to establish his chamber. Having studied criminal law while in police force.

By the way, now that you have a business and money, why can't you go for postgraduate program? You can lecture after completion of master degree, at least, it means you are practising what you studied in school.

Hmm, this is a very dangerous thought, going to school doesn't guarantee you will make money.
Life outside school is another ball game.
Be ready to learn and unlearn.

I will say it depends on the branch of law practise you want to specialize in, and the kind of law firm you find yourself in. If you happen to work in the ivy-league corporate firms on Lagos Island e.g Templars, Aelex, Banwo and Ighodalo etc., you will love the profession. But you must have distinguished yourself in academics for you to be considered e.g a first class in Uni or Law School.
But the litigation firms will task you. And many of them without corporate appeal pay peanuts. But litigation is a time- rewarding venture, as you hone your skills in advocacy, clients will pursue you. Many insist ADR is the real thing but I believe Nigerians are not conciliatory by nature. It still get tied up in court litigation.

P.S. I am a Lawyer, completed NYSC this year, and I am yet to get a law firm in which to practice. Please help my life, I believe my helper is here. I want to work in 2019. God bless you as you help me

You stayed put at ibadan and stuck to local practise with lowly rated firms. Your experience is not a reliable yardstick. We will be here someday when you'd report back how the economy has stultified your business or how government policy has killed your business forays. To think you used to speak highly of the legal profession. I advise people, first make it a passion and money will walk through.

lol.. With all due respect i wasn't involved in local practice. My salary was good enough compared to what other firms pay. I worked with Olalekan Ojo and co. Google their clientele so you can verify it's nothing near "local". A firm that handles cases for TB Joshua, Farouk Lawan, Al Mustapha, Obat oil to name a few?I used to speak highly of the legal profession because i never knew the rot beneath the pomp and pageantry the world sees it to be. And, oh.. If my business can thrive in Buhari economy, then i wonder what other economy or government policy can kill my business. Its a business i didn't dabble into. I have been doing it since my undergraduate days, as far back as 2012. So trust me, my business is good!

The legal profession is good enough for bragging rights, but don't deny the fact that lawyers are roasting! Many cannot boast of a million naira this December. Some female lawyers came to my hair showroom from the customary court of appeal. They asked about price for a particular hair,my staff told her N67, 500. The ladies shouted, that that's their three months salary..How can a professional be expected to live on N25000?I couldn't help but wonder, if it's worth the stress finally.

Whatever floats your boat. Truth is, if some lawyers are having it rough, it doesn't mean the profession is not worth its weight in gold. Accountants, engineers, etc are all embroiled in this same persistent lack of jobs or low income saga until individuals carve a niche for themselves and grow to their desired height. It is not about the profession, it's about the person and the economy.

Sure.. So let's try to be realistic while dealing with young ones, so they are mentally prepared for what's ahead. Nobody rolls out a red carpet for you, because you are a lawyer. There are too many lawyers and not enough briefs. I have friends working in firms without pay! How can they meet their needs?
.
A classmate whose wife gave birth through CS didn't have N250,000 as savings to pay for the surgical operation. A married man that's 4 years at the bar, also working with a firm. My husband had to ask me how he intends to take care of the baby and wife afterwards? We had to contribute money on our University Alumni whatsapp group to assist him.
.
I don't wish a life of financial dependence and uncertainty on anyone. Life is short, i can't spend my youthful days suffering in the name of "passion"!If a profession isn't paying, you leave it to find something more lucrative. At least i am not Dangote, but i can comfortably travel to anywhere in the world, eat what i want and still have money dropping in my account on a daily basis, even in my sleep! So, no regrets whatsoever dumping my wig and gown!

I don't wish financial dependence for anyone. If a profession isn't paying, you leave it to find something more lucrative. It's this "law is prestigious, i must die in active law practice" that makes many lawyers wallow in poverty! May God help them anyways.

Lawyers are not trained to only practice the profession as advocates. Lawyers can and often do well as solicitors. This is where the real money is, in the short term. You have to build up advocacy skills and clientele and this happens over time. The people I help everyday with their personal and family financial issues are not lawyers, they belong to a wide spectrum of professions including traders like you. My point is, singling out the legal profession as if it is responsible for some people's financial challenges is myopic. Beyond the financial returns, knowing the law and carrying that toga gives you some headroom above contemporaries if you know how to deploy your skills. In the final analysis, it still boils down to the person and the economy, not the profession.

The problem with the legal profession right now, just like in any other industry is lack of mentorship. The senior lawyers are slave drivers looking for whose blood to suck dry. If you find yourself in an organisation that doesn't enable your growth, it's better to quit. You should have a short and long-term plan of what you want to achieve. Look for a problem to solve innovatively. Think outside the box. The world needs lawyers. Know your responsibility.

Before lawyers do sustain themselves with company registrations with CAC and all, but now people do it themselves online.

The bottom line is, look for other opportunities in other fields.
