Govs Lead Buhari’s Campaign Onslaught As State Coordinators by dre11(m): 6:09am On Dec 13, 2018
By Felix Nwaneri

Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been pencilled down to lead President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign for the 2019 general elections in their respective states even as the party has concluded arrangements to flag-off its presidential campaign.
The governors are to serve as State Campaign Coordinators (SCCs) for Buhari’s re-election.

The ruling party, unlike the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is yet to kick-start its presidential campaign, but New Telegraph exclusively gathered yesterday that a list of members of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) to be headed by the President would be released possibly this week or next.

Other members of the council, it was further gathered, are Vice President Yemi Osibanjo; the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who is to serve as deputy chairman; the party’s National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and the Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Chibuike Amaechi.

This is as the newspaper also learnt that Buhari told APC faithful and his supporters, who are worried that he is yet to flag-off his campaign to calm down, as he understands the game more than them.

A source in the know, who disclosed this to our correspondent, said the governors will lead the President’s campaign in their respective states, but in states where the APC doesn’t have governors, the party’s governorship candidates for the 2019 elections will take charge, working with members of the party executives.

The ruling party is in control of 21 out of the country’s 36 states. In the South-West, the party controls the six states of the zone, but governorship elections will hold only in three – Lagos, Oyo and Ogun and the party’s candidates are all contesting for their first term.

Two out of the three outgoing governors in the zone, Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) would be contesting for senatorial seats and are expected to have time for the presidential campaign. Their Lagos State counterpart, Akinwunmi Ambode, who has lost out in his re-election bid, is also expected to give the presidential campaign the attention it needed.

In the South-South, the ruling party controls only one state – Edo – and there will not be governorship election in the state. So, Governor Godwin Obsaeki is also expected to have enough time for the presidential campaign.

The same applies in Kogi and Nasarawa states (North-Central), where Governors Yahaya Bello and Tanko Al-Makura are expected to lead the presidential campaign. Governorship election will not hold in Kogi, so Bello is free, while Al-Makura is contesting for a senatorial seat.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, who is APC’s only governor in the South-East is equally expected to be free since he is not seeking for re-election. Though the governor, who is contesting for a senatorial seat, has issues with the national leadership of the party, he assured that he would remain in APC to work for Buhari.

It is the same expectation in Yobe and Borno states (North-East) as well as Zamfara State (North-West). Governors Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe), Kashim Shettima (Borno) and Abdulaziz Yari are not seeking re-election and are expected to be free to lead the presidential campaign.
The source, who said he is sure that the composition of the PCC would soon be announced, also confirmed that the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Tinubu, will deputise Buhari at the PCC.

Tinubu was reported to have opted out of the President’s campaign, but the source confirmed that he is an integral member of the PCC.

His words: “The APC Presidential Campaign Council is likely to be announced this week or next. President Buhari is the one to lead the council, while Tinubu will serve as deputy. The organogram has President Buhari as chairman, while Tinubu is the deputy.

“The Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, who is the Director General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation is the number three in the hierarchy, while APC governors will serve as State Campaign Coordinators (SCCs).

“In states where the party is not in control, the governorship candidates for the forthcoming general elections will head the SCCs, working with the states party executives.”
He added that the governors will assign roles to ministers from their respective states and other political appointees.

The source also gave clarifications on states where the APC’s national leadership has issues with their governors over the fallout of the primaries.

“In states where the party doesn’t seem to trust the sitting governors, like Zamfara, Ogun and Imo, the party has no choice than to work with them,” he said.

The source also confirmed that the Director of Media of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), will head the Strategic Communication Unit of the PCC, while an adviser to the President, who is a member of the unit, will also run a separate communication unit.

Another presidential source, who confirmed that the party has no option than to work with the aggrieved governors, said: “The aggrieved governors are still members of the party, so they are going to play roles during the campaigns. They should be thinking about life after office, so they may not like to enter the black book of the party.”
He, however, said that he couldn’t confirm the date for the flag-off of the campaign, as that is the prerogative of the President.

“On the flag-off of the presidential campaign, the party is waiting for President Buhari, though he has told us that he is more experienced than all of us, having been in this game since 2003. You know that as young people, our blood is hot and we are eager to go, but he keeps telling us to calm down,” he said.

Meanwhile, Keyamo, who spoke with our correspondent, yesterday, said he could not give a date for the flag-off of the APC presidential campaign.

He also said that the party is not worried that the PDP has held three zonal rallies so far.
His words: “I can’t give a date when the APC presidential campaign will commence. All I can tell you for now is that we are working hard as a party and I will assure you that President Buhari will win the election.”

Asked whether the President’s camp is not threatened by the crowd witnessed at the PDP’s zonal presidential rallies in Sokoto, Ibadan and Ilorin, Keyamo said: “We are not worried that the PDP has started its campaign.

“If any party should be worried, it is the PDP that should be worried as you can see from what happened in the recent by-election in Kwara State. The North-West has over 18 million voters, so why should we be worried over less than 10,000 people that were at the PDP rally in Sokoto?”

Lmfao!!! grin This funny bag of bones called Buhari have a cunning way of deceiving his cows. He can smell his defeat already but his cows are worried about his delay to kick start his campaign. Buhari knows that Atiku is going to win but it will be difficult for him to convince his cows who are anticipating for his campaign.

Now we can clearly see the reasons why the bag of bones is delaying to sign the electoral bill.
