Two female graduates of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have reportedly broken the 21-yr-old jinx of no first class graduate at the institution’s English Department.

The graduates, Kehinde Lawal and Roheemah Arogundade finished with 4.56 CGPA.

According to Premium Times, Akinmade Akande, who is now a professor of English, is the last person to graduate from the department with a first class degree in 1997.

I remember sometime in 2000, when his class was about to start at Ajose lecture theater, One Albino student was about a minute late along with a group of about 15 other students.

The others were able to merge into the crowd at the back when Akande was not looking up and the Albino also tried to do the same.

Mr Akande noticed from tbe shuffling of feet and climbed the stairs to the back of the class and went to the guy and said " so if everyone is hiding, you too believe that you can hide"

Those guys were failing people just for fun back then.

Abi Ooo, even Oxford and Cambridge university are chunning out First Class from these department. One school in Nigeria will now be claiming standard that does not stand anywhere not to talk of international
I think those lecturers are returning to their normal senses when they see how private universites are producing first-class and the way employer's readily accept them.

It was obvious that those students were extremely good. Others could have made it but the department wouldn't let them because of some useless policies. They should thank their stars because some persons must have sacrificed to make sure they get it on merit. Some universities wouldn't let it happen. They reduce scores of students right from year one to final year

You may be right. Many lecturers in public universities especially English department feels that a linguist in English can not be better than the speaker or the originator of the language. That is the main reason they keep slashing student's scores especially those that merited high grade.
