Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o is an award-winning, world-renown Kenyan writer and academic who writes primarily in Gikuyu. His work includes novels, plays, short stories, and essays, ranging from literary and social criticism to children's literature. He is the founder and editor of the Gikuyu-language journal Mũtĩiri. While Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and critic. His first novel Things Fall Apart, often considered his best, is the most widely read book in modern African literature. Achebe was a pathfinder, a trailblazer, a trendsetter...for this reason he was proclaimed, though he denounced the title, the father of African literature. His influence went beyond story writing, often critical of pseudo-intellectual ideologies demeaning Africa, he rebelled, revolted the abasement of African cosmology, mythology, religion, and literature and in the process, not only did he reshape western consciousness of Africa, he established a collection of works that is today regarded as classic. His guiding mantra had been for the hunted to tell his tale for "unless the lion tells his side of the story, the story of the hunt will always glorify the hunter."
