There isn't adequate evidence to label this as an assassination. Unfortunately, they saw the armed robbers and switched on their headlamp, this is the only cogent reason why they shot him, they would have kidnapped him alive.
This same scenario led to the killing of my uncle along Benin-Asaba road.The driver switched on the headlight to full view to blind the thieves so he can take off when he ran into them, they opened fire and the rest is history.

But it bothers me why he had no security details on him, or even escorts. Why a top shot like that driving a Toyota Tundra car (unarmoured) and even sitting on the passenger seat.

He should have known he is a wanted man, and ought to protect himself, it's either his security details was removed from him, or he was just plain stupid driving unprotected perhaps he didn't expect anyone to know his movements and kill him.

Or maybe he hid some money in that his farm and doesn't want prying eyes (security) to snitch on him. I will suggest EFCC go dig everywhere in that farm, I can guarantee some of our money is stashed somewhere there.

Ever experienced highway robbery? I have many times both in Lagos and on my way to PH sometimes. It does not make any sense to admit you parked and robbers were within your line of sight (i.e you were within their line of sight too) but you and other potential victims were left alone and the robbers decided to wait for any "daring" commuter Even if the thieves mounted a road block, they'd spread far and no one in their line of sight is safe.
