https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M70yoV2ZizY “All objects (both earthly or celestial) persists in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless it its compelled to act otherwise by an external force impressed on it” –Isaac Newton, 1686. Automotive and vehicular design have over the years, through innovation attempted to make the automobile safe particularly when involved in a collision. This have led to huge development in ‘Active safety’ ( involving suspension design, anti-lock braking systems(ABS), Vehicle stability Control/Assist, Traction control systems and any other system that can make a driver avoid an accident) and ‘Passive safety’( involving structural integrity of the vehicle chassis via the development of crumple zones that deflect and absorb energy away from the occupant cabin, seatbelts, airbags and any other system that can protect the occupants of the vehicle if the crash is doomed (or na deemed) to happen). As all bodies are bound to obey the laws of physics, it is only normal for any person (or object for that matter ) to keep moving when a car is rapidly decelerated from 50mph(80kph){the usual crash test speed used in vehicle testing) , like this video to 0 mph. The issue here is the time it takes to achieve that , which is usually in the domain of less than a 0.2 seconds. How bad can this be? One may ask. Let say James weighs 90 kg(in mass), and his weight is 90*9.81= 883.9 N this is me experiencing 1g, g being acceleration due to gravity. Now if James is involved in an accident , and for some reason forgot to wear his seatbelt, and was travelling at 50 kph (was not tempted that day to drive fast) the force he would experience would be= ((90*(50-0)*1000/3600)/0. 2=6250 N. this means he will experience a force equal to over 7 times his weight! This explains why the test dummies (in the attached video) were easily thrown out of the front windscreen. And this only gets worse at higher speeds. Airbags help, but there are only effective when the occupant have been properly restrained by the seat belts (+pretensioners). In fact airbags can kill if they deploy too close to the occupant, as they are released with an explosive force, and within a very , very short time. So guys, what you see in this video can indeed happen. Always wear your seat belts, no matter how short the trip may be! Motorguru Cc.
