The sun produces an astonishing amount of energy. A single hour of it is enough to power the world for a year. In fact, the amount of solar energy striking the earth at any given moment, is more than 10,000 times the world’s total energy use. The use of clean, renewable energy is on the rise worldwide, so it’s no surprise that solar is an increasingly popular choice when it comes to heating and powering homes. In fact, recent reports suggest that based on the current growth, a quarter of energy use and supply globally may come from the solar power by 2050. And while our use of solar is growing steadily, we are still only using a fraction of the total energy potential from this incredibly powerful source. Here in Nigeria, we’re seeing a huge shift in the adoption of solar energy. Improvements in technology, coupled with greater awareness of the savings that can be achieved and environmental benefits, Nigerians would turn to solar to supplement, if not entirely replace their energy needs. What is solar power? Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics, indirectly using concentrated solar power, or a combination. Components of solar power system. The following are the major components that make up a solar power system; Solar panel Battery Inverter Charge controller Solar rack Battery rack Solar cable Solar panel: A solar panel is a device that converts light energy from the sun to electrical energy. Solar panels are of two types; monocrystalline (mono) and polycrystalline (poly) panels. Both monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels serve the same function in the overall solar pv system; they capture energy from the sun and turn it into electricity. The major differences between mono and poly panel are; Monocrystalline panels are black in color while polycrystalline panels are bluish in color. Monocrystalline panels are more expensive than polycrystalline panels. Monocrystalline panels is more efficient than polycrystalline panels because mono panels require moderate sun intensity while polycrystalline panels requires high sun intensity to work well, hence it is recommended in northern part of Nigeria. Solar panels is also used to charge the battery bank. Solar panels are of various capacity rated in wattage. There are 10w, 20w,50w………… 100w, 150w, 200w, 250w, 300w and even higher. Batteries: solar batteries are charged with energy from solar panels. Batteries are rated in ampere – hour. There are various capacity of batteries such as 18amp/6v or 18amp/12v, 40amp/6v or 40amp/12v, 100amp/12v, 120amp/12v, 150amp/12v, 200amp/12v, 220amp/12v. NOTE: the batteries here are deep cycle batteries and the current produced by batteries are direct current (DC) |
