The national leader of APC, Chief Bola Tinubu (Jagaban), has lambasted Alhaji Atiku for daring to contest against President Buhari in 2019. Tinubu wondered why Atiku should attempt to return to power when he spent 8 years looting Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. Angry Tinubu said, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar does not deserve another shot at power because he blew his opportunity during his eight years reign under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In his attack, Punch Newspaper quoted Tinubu as saying alhaji Atiku was blinded by greed thereby looting of billions of dollars pumped into the power sector during his reign as VP whilst overseeing the privatisation programme of President Obasanjo.
Whistle Times investigation shows that a section of Nigerians were alarmed at Tinubu’s remark considering the fact that Tinubu himself has been accused of high powered corruption from his time as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007 when Atiku was a Vice President. A Whistle Times insider said, Nigerian politicians know themselves in and out, they know who owns what and they also know the secret of their rivals. Hence, Tinubu might be speaking as an insider.
Between 2014 and early 2015, a high powered documentary of Tinubu’s asserts and corruption was exposed in the run up to the 2015 presidential elections. It was showed that Tinubu himself might not be any different from Alhaji Atiku. The video portrayed Tinubu as the biggest landlord of Lagos State, he was accused of acquiring some of the most juicy land and other properties of the state. Today, Tinubu is one of the richest politicians of our time as he owns several companies running into billions of Naira. Could Tinubu’s statement be described as the proverbial pot calling the kettle black?
A political analyst who spoke to Whistle Times pointed out that it would have been better if the accusation of corruption was coming from another politician, someone who does not have as much corruption allegations like the former Lagos State governor.
Nevertheless, Tinubu’s remark about Alhaji Atiku’s corruption cannot be ignored as the PDP candidate is the single most accused Nigerian politician of high powered corruption, this reputation has stayed with the PDP candidate for many years despite the fact that he has not been charged for corruption anywhere in the world in his life time.
In his remark, Tinubu said the upcoming presidential election as a contest between two opposing visions – “one seeking to better the lot of generality of Nigerians and one which has no regard for the public but seeks to return the country to the days of official malpractices and corruption.” The respected Tinubu was speaking after president Buhari appointed him as the chief APC presidential campaign manager.
Tinubu described his appointment by Buhari as a great honour, pledging that he and other members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, including the council’s Director General, Rotimi Amaechi, would not let the President down, as doing so would amount to letting the nation down.
