Fullest Option - A Conundrum by chidi2pus(m): 6:06pm On Jan 17, 2019 |
Many a time I go through Auto Ads on NL, the word full option or fullest option is usually used, ignorantly. For example, there was a case of a 2014 Mercedes Benz ML350 being marketed as fullest option. The said car was evidently seen to lack Bi Xenon headlights, Premium Harman Kardon speakers, Sun roof, 20 inch rims not to mention other safety, comfort, performance or technology options. Yet, the seller marketed the car as "FULLEST OPTION" To clarify, Options are features that don't come as standard/preloaded equipment with the vehicle. These items can range from upgraded premium sound system, Bi-xenon/Matrix LED headlights, 360 cameras, massage seats, larger rims to a larger engine. Most options are installed at the factory. Others are port-installed options i.e They are added to a vehicle before it heads out to the dealership on a delivery truck. Other options might be installed at the dealership itself. When buying a car at a dealership, You can opt to configure your car by adding list of options/packages. Now, depending on the car manufacturer, costs of options can run up to millions of naira especially with German brands like MERCEDES, BMW or AUDI. For example, I was asked to pay an equivalent of 680k just for the burmester premium audio system for a Mercedes Benz Eclass. Packages are groups of options that have been bundled together with a common theme. For example, a technology package might include such options as Bluetooth, navigation, xenon-gas headlights and adaptive cruise control. A cold weather package might have heated seats, headlight washers and all-weather floor mats. Some automakers may give their packages a less than descriptive name, such as Equipment Group 102A (Ford) or Premium Group (Dodge) or AMG package (Mercedes Benz) or M package (BMW) or S line Package ( AUDI) Trim levels further identify a vehicle by a particular set of special features. Higher trim levels means the car is usually preloaded with a lot of features that you would have had to purchase additional when buying a base/entry level trim of a car. Trim levels are where you'll come across terms such as EX, LTZ, Touring and Grand Touring, among countless others. Keep in mind that configuring your own car may take up to 8 weeks for delivery. If you're not careful, options and packages can turn a reasonably priced car into an overly optioned beast that's well outside your price range. Further, don't count on those options to bring in extra cash when you're selling in your vehicle a few years down the road. Highly optioned vehicles often see higher depreciation. That's because used-car customers are less interested in all the bells and whistles. But if you're a car buyer, you may want to educate yourself on the specified options/packages of a prospective car. This can help you in Bargaining for it. A typical case was a friend of mine buying a used 2014 Mercedes Benz ML350 with very very few options/packages for the price of a well equiped similar Model simply because the seller marketed the car as "FULLEST OPTION" As an old saying goes; if you think education is expensive...Try ignorance. 2 Likes |

A very educative post, and like the recent discussions in car talk section concerning auto scam, anyone INTENTIONALY or wrongly advertising a car as full/fullest option when it is not, indulges in auto scam. |
