Akudaya: The Story Of The One Who Did Not Die / Akudaya (2) (3) (4)

(1) (2) (Reply) (Go Down)

Akudaya by Nobody: 6:56pm On Jan 22, 2019
He couldn't understand why the woman suddenly fainted on seeing him. It was like she'd seen a ghost, and the most interesting part of it was that she actually did shout his name, followed by "Ch-i-i-zos!", before slumping in the banking hall. Though her face seemed familiar he couldn't at that moment recall where he'd met her before. One of the customers with some knowledge of CPR helped resuscitate her, but on seeing him again she passed out. It was at that point that he decided to simply walk away from that scene despite having not accomplished his aim of coming to the bank in the first place.

Hardly had he made it out of the bank's premises than he noticed that the woman and another man was following behind, and when he boarded the bus that will take him from the bank to his home, he noticed that the same woman, and the man were now tailing the bus he was in, with their car. When he was certain that they were indeed tailing him, he decided to alight from the bus, and confront them. They stopped their car and he approached the woman sitting beside the man who was driving. She didn't faint this time, but appealed to him to grant them an audience, and if possible they'd like to meet with his family. She said it was quite unfortunate that he couldn't remember her, but that she'd met him before, and he'd been kind enough to help her through a predicament, for which she would love to reward him handsomely, preferably before members of his family.

On a good day, he'd have simply ignored the woman at that point, warn her to steer clear of his business, and continue on his way home, but though he didn't trust the woman enough to believe what she said, he was also very interested in getting to the bottom of her story. Also, the fact that there are currently a number of friends and family at his home for his child's christening ceremony (for which he'd been at the bank to make some withdrawals), instilled confidence in him, as regards the woman and her escort doing anything crazy in the presence of so large a gathering, that are favourable towards him. He could also relish the possibility of good press, should the woman be true to her words as to her intentions. With all that in mind, he made for the back seat of the car, and directed the duo to his house.

He met a pensive atmosphere at home, with his wife and others saddled with the responsibility of organizing the days event, wondering what kept him for long, while his wife didn't remove her suspicious gaze on the lady that had accompanied her husband home. She remembered vividly that she was the same lady that attended her (now) sister-in-law's wedding in Anambra State, three years before she got married to him. Even though her husband had assured her that there was nothing between them anymore, and they remained friends regardless of the fact that they'd had something between them while they both served in Jigawa State twelve years ago, but her suspicions was again piqued when he appeared to have taken forever in seeing her off to Onitsha (from where she left for Port Harcourt) the day after the wedding ceremony, having spent all night (after the wedding) chatting with her, at least the much she was aware of before succumbing to sleep.

The manner in which his wife then went ahead to cordially but cautiously greet the strange woman, further aroused in him the desire to speedily sort whatever issues that had to do with the woman so he could get on with the pressing issue of the day. He couldn't fathom how he'd become that old just in his early forties to have memory challenges, enough to not remember who this woman was, even when his wife has shown clearly that she was quite familiar with her. He didn't even think his case of Lethologica could speedily have progressed to early onset Alzheimer's disease. It had become pertinent that everything would've to wait till he resolved the matter at hand, hence he refused to accede to pleas by those around to allow the ceremony to commence in earnest, after which he could sort whatever it is he had with the woman that tailed him from the bank out.

Once he'd managed to pacify his wife and organizers to make do with what they already have due to his inability to withdraw some money at the bank, , he craved the indulgence of guests who had already arrived to tarry a while longer before the commencement of the ceremony, while he asked just close family members, his wife and the woman and her male escort to come with him to his apartment upstairs. It was while there that the woman explained why she fainted twice in the banking hall on seeing him. His wife had already concurred with the strange woman that they were familiar with each other, but that they hadn't seen each other since after that wedding in Anambra State. The woman explained however, that she'd been seeing him after that period, till about two years ago, when he visited Port Harcourt to ask that they both start another family together, seeing as his wife hadn't been able to have children with him.

She then went further to explain to the small gathering, that she hadn't exactly agreed, but told him she'd think about it, seeing as there was someone interested in her at the time. Her intention was to agree, only if he jilted her, but he hadn't and they had gotten married with a child so far. It was while she was with her husband at the bank in Lagos, to procure foreign exchange to travel abroad for vacation, that she saw him and fainted, and on recovery begged her husband to help her get to the his abode, if possible see his family. He still looked bewildered as the woman narrated her story, and though none of it made sense, he still allowed her to continue, until she said that even if her would-be husband hadn't come through, the plan of having a second family with her couldn't have materialized for him, as just the same evening after he left her in Port Harcourt for Onitsha, the bus in which he was travelling in, along that stretch of road on Elele (after Madonna University as one made for the Aba-Owerri Road), was attacked by armed men who'd shot at the tyres with the intention of kidnapping the passengers, unfortunately one of the bullets hit him in the head, and he'd died along with the driver, while a few of the passengers sustained injuries. Sadly, that didn't stop the armed men from robbing the dead and injured who couldn't run into the nearby bushes of all their valuables, which was why she couldn't reach anyone, after she heard the news about the late night attack on the bus the next morning, and calling his number to no avail (which she described as quite uncharacteristic of him), and had gone to the mortuary close to the scene of the incident where, according to the news, the dead had been taken; only to find his body, unwashed still with the gaping hole in his temple and the exit wound, at which point she couldn't any longer continue with her story, but sobbed uncontrollably with accompanying intermittent shivers of her buxomness.

There and then, he began to feel some numbness in his feet. His wife had now joined the woman to cry, and in between sobs mentioned that she could remember that her husband travelled to his hometown in Anambra State, at about the same time the woman talked about, but that she wasn't aware he'd gone to Port Harcourt, though she noticed he hadn't returned with his clothes, nor anything he travelled with, which he simply attributed to a robbery incident at Òrè, in Ondo State while returning via night bus the morning following the night of the said incidence. Her joy at her husband's safe return belied any other concerns she might have had, at the time. For someone that made such trips at least four times a year, she noticed he hadn't travelled home to Anambra after that particular journey two years ago, though he'd been to other places in Nigeria for business, which interestingly had begun to record exponential growth, and after seven years of childlessness they now had a child, whom those present had come to witness his christening on the fateful day. All of a sudden, he noticed everyone looking at his feet, and he decided to follow suit, while wondering how to respond to something he hadn't the slightest inkling about, only to find that his feet weren't there anymore, and his knees were fading, then his thighs, groin, torso, chest, only then did he understand what was happening.

EPISODE 2

“you are finally back” said the man at the junction that led to the long deserted road

“And…who are you?” Mike asked looking suspiciously at the young man with dreadlocks, and his hands in the pockets of his faded jeans

“Oh! You still don’t know me?” the Unknown Man asked in bewilderment and disappointment. He looked up the sky and shouted at an invisible presence;

“Maybe you should consider giving me a fancier name than this…Mr Death…”
Mike stepped back in shock, he widened his eyes and was about to say something before young Mr Death interrupted

“Yea yea I know…I am too funky and young for this Job right? I thought so too…” He turned towards the deserted road and walked on, hoping that Mike would follow;

“Tried explaining that to the Boss…told him that I should be bathing in the sun and having Jasmine ran through my head by beautiful curvy Angelic girls…”

He stopped moving as he didn’t hear a corresponding footsteps, he turned and saw Mike trying to go back from the portal that brought him to the Junction;

“Ah..ah…ahhhh…you are not doing that again this time” Mr Death warned with a smirk on his face

“you see…the last time you landed here two years ago, you refused to follow me there to meet the Boss, you said you are too young to die and you needed to get a Son first before you will come back” Mike deemed his eyes like he didn’t remember any of the things this crazy guy was saying;

“You don’t remember? Something about being an only Son and needed a replacement before you come back?” Mr death tried to remind Mike who seemed to be more confused

“Hrrrmmm…Mortals can they ever remember anything?” Mr Death muttered in frustration

“Okay… I will show you if that will make you remember…”
With that he waved his fingers and a big screen appeared, with another wave of fingers a recorded scene came up, but instead of a flashback of Mike making speeches and promises, it was a recorded scenes of The young Mr Death frolicking with three naked girls;

“…No no nooooo… not that…” Mr Death shouted with uneasiness.

He looked at Mike he raised an eyebrow to him

“What? Can't a young stressed messenger of death get his groove on? I am not one of your heavenly Angels…” He said in defense before flipping to another clip

“Okaaayyy…here is your clip, Last two years…”

On the clip was Mike on his knee, begging the young Spirit for another chance to go back to the world to make amends, try one more time to get his wife pregnant and write his will, in exchange, he would come back a year later not only to embark on the journey of eternity with the young spirit, but will make sure he would come with a young mortal beauty for the young spirit..

“And… here you are, after two years puffing like a smoke unannounced, I have waited for you for one year, the boss had asked me about you since that two years and I had lie to him… he knew I lied so he sent me down here to bring you or never go back to my roaming…”

“Please can I at least go back and say goodbye to my wife?” Mike spoke after a long time, he now remembered. He didn’t remember coming here before, it was as if his after death memories were wiped off immediately he went back to the world, but the young rascal wasn’t with dreadlocks two years ago

“What? You dear ask that after tricking me for more than a year? Mr man, it took me the effort of planting that woman in that bank today to send you back, do you know how tough it was to manipulate her stubborn heart? No no no…you are going with me to Eternity now…shall we?”

He stretched his hands towards Mike who took the hand when he saw how determined the young Mr Death was, both started their journey

“See the bright side of this Mike…your wife will not have to wake you up in the middle of the night to ask for explanation on why you went to Port Harcourt to ask another woman for a second family…” Said the spirit

“You knew?” Mike asked

“Sure, in this job, you got to know everything about your target, I hung around you all these years, your death was already sighed since four years ago, I was only waiting for the perfect opportunity to take you” Mr Death Answered

“What happened? Why didn’t you kill me before two years ago”

“Hush! That hurts me real bad, Kill is a hash word to use…I don’t kill, I take, so you should say… ‘why didn’t I take you’ anyways the answer is your wife, she was always making the Boss change his mind about you…all those long prayers, vigils…, you trying to trick her was what broke the edge around you and gave me the chance to strike”

They walked in silence, there were few people also making the journey but every man on his own.

“There is no Joy in this job…” the Young spirit mourned

“The whole place is dry, no life in it, no booze, no music no women…I hate this job” he said to himself

“Then why did you agree to do it” Mike asked

“My Old Man retired…the dreaded old death himself…the boss said I should take my father’s place”
They kept walking…

EPISODE 3

“Don’t tell me that! Ah ah…what do you mean Mike has been dead for two years, do you think I am a child?”

His wife, friends and some neighbors had hurried back to the village to alert the family of the mystery. Mike’s Mother was seated on the ground, her breast which was as flat as an Hausa Mat, was bare and lapped on her ribs as if they were stitched together.

“I said it…I said that this woman will kill my son one day and tell me stories, didn’t I see this coming? Now she has kidnapped my son and is here to tell me stories…”

“Woman wait! Close your mouth first let me understand what this people are saying…” Old Man Pius shunned his wife

He cleared his throat, he didn’t understand the story they brought to his house. He had seen mysteries and have seen strange things; like the baby that came to the world with two teeth and had refused to cry even when beating by the nurses, and Okwute’s wife who has been pregnant for twelve months, but nothing has prepared him for what he just heard

“John…” he turned to his younger brother

“You said you were there when this happened…”

“Brother, I saw it… I saw him disappear, his legs disappeared first, then the stomach …the Hands… I thought we were all dreaming…”

“It is a lie!” Mike’s Mother Jumped on John from where she was seated, threatening to tear the poor Man apart

“You connived with this woman to Kidnap my son and share his properties!” for the intervention of other women and Elders, Her loosed wrapper would have fallen on the floor, exposing her waist beads.

Titilayo, Mike’s wife sat in between the woman that followed Mike from the Bank and her Neighbor, clutching her son like and hand bag, tears and mucus competing which to enter her mouth first

Old Man Pius eyed his wife with anger, hissed and resumed his questions;

“Woman, you said he visited you before he died…”

“Yes, he visited me in Port Harcourt, I heard about the incident that led to his death, when I got to the scene, he was already dead…I swear I saw him”

“But why didn’t you contact anybody?” Asked Old Man Pius

“I couldn’t even if I wanted to, I don’t know his family, we were only friends and by the time I got to his dead body, even his wallet was gone”

“Hmm…this is strange, he came here last month as he normally does, I can get the cloths he bought for his mother and the kai-kai he gave to me…he even said he will be coming this Christmas with his son for the traditional Imala…”

Old man Pius folded his wrapper in-between his laps and shook his laps in a musical rhythm.

*
“Why is it taking this long to go see your Boss?”

They have been walking that road for long and he was beginning to feel like they were going to keep walking for eternity. To worsen his situation, the young Mr Death has been a charter box since they embarked on the journey.

“I should be asking you this question, why is it taking you too long to accept your death and allow me fly you to the boss in peace? You see, as long as your heart is still with your wife…you will still be on this road…”

“Then allow me to go back home, I don’t want to be here, my family needs me…”

“Too late, too late my good friend…as we are talking, the whole village has already know that you were a ghost who came to get a last time F**k…Ehem… I didn’t say that…”

Mr Death looked around to make sure no one heard his use the word f**ck, then he smiled

“The boss must be occupied with something else, he would have thundered my name from heaven if he heard me use the F word…” he laughed and slapped Mike on the shoulder

“Okay…okay…here is the deal, concentrate on this journey, forget your family and ‘bam’ we will be at the gate of your destination in seconds…”

“I can’t…”

“What in the beards of Moses are you saying? Please mortal, make my job eassssiiiii….shut the door of the world and concentrate on this journey, I hand you over to the demon or Angel depending on what your book says, I go my way to another important venture…and we are good, Okay?”

The young Death was on his knee with his hands clapped together in a praying mode;

“Okay…I will try…”

“Yo o o , my man, you understand when a Gee needs some cooperation from his fellow Gee…” Mr Death jumped up

“I am not your Gee..”

“Of course you are…you have no choice, you are my kind of guy you know…handsome…with lots of muscles…look at those hairs on your chest…guy…you must have made some women masturbate in their dreams when you were alive…”

Mike looked at his, arching his eyebrows in awe;

“How did you Boss settled to have you do this Job, you are a clown, a misfit…” Mike asked

“Ehem…what is a clown?...hold that thought first, I have to say hello to that demon hottie over there”

He combed his dreadlocks with his fingers waved his fingers and a mirror appeared, he checked himself out twisted and turned his face in admiration;

“Hello Cuteness!” he hailed himself, making seductive dance steps

“Okay…now you have to stay put here, wait for me, I will be right back” he said to Mike and disappeared

Mike threw his arms in the air in frustration, he looked around him, catching a glimpse of a short tree at the centre of the road, with exotic fruits, and he walked towards it

“A beautiful tree with fruits in the middle of nowhere…” he stretched his hands to pluck one of the fruits;

Puff’ Young Mr Death poked his head from where ever he went to and held Mike’s hand, his shirt was gone and Mike could see soft hands running on his body and female voices giggling;

“No no no…don’t touch that…what don’t you understand when I say stay put? Guy wait over there…step backward…two more steps…okay I will be right back before you know it…Ladies!!! Shall we begin?” he disappeared again

EPISODE 4

“you are new?”

He heard a voice behind him and turned sharply. His mouth hung open and he blinked severally to be sure who he was looking at

“Oga Barnabas! You!” he shouted

“Yes, me” the man said awkwardly as he didn’t know whether to shake Mike or not. He watched as mike replaced the surprise look on his face with anger and he took some steps backward. But it was already late as Mike held him by the neck and shook him violently

“You owed me a lot of money and you ran away without any trace” Mike bellowed

“I didn’t mean to…I couldn’t get myself to pay you back…” Barnabas Whimpered

“You ruined me! You ended my career!” Mike shouted

“That was three years ago!”

“Yes it was, and you didn’t bother to pay me! You disappeared with my money…”

“I died!” Barnabas blunted out

“What?” Mike gradually eased his hold from Barnabas’ neck

“I died three years ago…” Barnabas straightened his shirt and continued “It was…it was poison” he put his face down in shame

“who would poison a never do well like you? What did the person want from you?” Mike said with spite

Barnabas gave him a glance and looked away “Your money…it was cursed”

Mike pushed his roughly “How dare you…you took my money and you are telling me that my money was cursed, why did you come to me to ask for it in the first place?”

“But it is! it was what brought me here in the first place…I died the same night I took the money from you”

He walked towards a fallen tree to seat down, Mike followed. They said nothing to each other for some time, an insect crawled up Mike’s bare foot, he slapped the insect and it fall on it’s back rolled over, shook itself and flew away. Mike was surprised

“They don’t die” Barnabas said casually

“What?”

“Those insects, they don’t die here, one has to learn how to leave with them”

They were both silence again for a while “So who poisoned you?” Mike asked

“Trisha”

“Who?”

Barnabas looked at Mike and looked away uncomfortably “Ehnm…the woman that owns ‘Oku Enu’ guest house…”

“You spent my money on prostitutes?” Mike cut in

“It is not what you think Mike, see…I couldn’t go home by the time I left your house, it was already late and you know how lonely and dangerous my street could be…so…so…I decided to sleep over the guest house” he said

“and why did this Trisha poison you?”

“She saw the money…she became greedy”

“Oga Barnabas! How did Trisha get to know about the money?”

“I…I invited her inside the room to…ehm rub my back”

Mike shook his head “So you lost my money to a Prostitute? How could you even sleep with a woman who is not your wife?”

“As if we don’t already know that you died two years ago on your way back from another babe house…” Barnabas grumbled to Mike’s amazement.

Barnabas saw the shock in Mike’s eyes and continued “it’s easy to know anything about anyone here, the Angels gossip a lot by the way, they discuss people’s death files…” when Mike said nothing, Barnabas added “I am so sorry Man…I would have paid you…but…well”

“what are you doing here by the way? I thought you would be in hell?” Mike asked to Barnabas’ amusement

“Why do you think I will be in hell?” he asked still laughing

“Isn’t it obvious? You were fornicator…”

“So were you”

“And…and a debtor!”

Barnabas laughed once more “Okay Mike, stop talking like a child, things don’t work that way here…” he adjusted his buttocks “soon you will realize that we were lied to about life after death” he spat on the dusty ground “So what are you doing here?” he asked Mike

“I don’t know…” Mike bent to scratch his leg “I met this weird looking young man who said he is the messenger of death…”

“With dreadlocks?” Barnabas asked

“Yes!” Mike looked at him sharply “You know him?”

“Who doesn’t know the young rascal? He was useless in hell…I even heard he was once a gateman in heaven before the Big Man up there got tired of him and sent him to hell as an assistant wine carrier to the devil” Barnabas coughed “He didn’t last a night and hell was let loose, Man Devo threatened to resign if he wasn’t recalled” He snapped his finger “Even his father is ashamed of him” Barnabas rose and dusted his buttocks “Good luck with your escort to wherever” he pats Mike on the shoulder

“what now? I mean…what happens next after one dies?” Mike asked as he rose with him

“I don’t know, I have been here only three years according to the time of men” he shook his head “That feels like eternity to me though” he muttered to himself “Anyways, I have been wondering from place to place since I arrived, and it is really boring I must tell you” he saw the confusion on Mike’s face and smiled sadly “Don’t worry, I heard there are realms that are filled with activities and fun, I have not been there yet though”

Mike brought his face closer to Barnabas’ and reduced his voice to a whisper “Have you seen the Boss… I mean…God?”

“If I have I won’t be here speaking with you” Barnabas retorted “And I have not met anyone who has by the way” He added “I really have to go now man; I have to find a place to settle down”

“Since three years?” Mike said in shock. Barnabas looked at him and walked on in silence. He didn’t want to tell him how he was refused entrance to three realms “You are not qualified yet to be here” was the answer given to him. “There is this place in-between Apsulasu and the Maluuzila, known as the realm of emptiness, there you will find lost and forgotten souls…you may find a place to settle there” one of the guardians of the realm was kind enough to tell him.

So he had set out to find this forgotten home for forgotten souls, but he would not tell Mike that, Mike has always been the perfect guy who had everything going on well for him; a good job immediately after graduation, a wife and a good life, even a chance to go back to earth after his death. He had always felt that Mike mocked him behind his back because of his failures, the only thing that he had which Mike didn’t have was children and he grabbed every moment to rub it on Mike’s face.

He stumbled on what he thought to be a rock and fall on his stomach, he jumped on his feet and dusted himself

“Look where you are going!” the stone slowly moved and Barnabas realized it was a tortoise “Looser” the tortoise muttered angrily, leaving Barnabas standing in shock and frustration.

*

“So what did I miss?”

The young Death grinned with satisfaction as he puffed back beside Mike

“Thank you for keeping me waiting while you catch your groove” Mike cut in Angrily

“Wow wait man” Mr Death held his hand in a halt position “You were not alone, you got yourself a companion” he said

“How…How did you know that?”

The Young Mr death magically brought out a gadget that was like nothing Mike has seen before “Your chip is connected to this”

“Chip? You use technology down here?”

Mr Death looked at him with bemusement “What do you think of us? This whole place is wires with the highest technology that your little earth can never discover centuries to come” he was satisfied that he was able to petrify Mike “You people are dumber that you give yourselves credits” he muttered

“Hei…don’t insult me” Mike said in defense to the amusement of the young Mr Death

“Come on, let’s get going” Mr Death chuckled

“You've got a name?” Mike asked after they have walked for sometime

“What do you think?” A child walked hand in hand with his mother pass them, the child looked at them, said something to his mother and pointed at him. the young Mr Death bare his teeth, rolled his eyes inside the socket and made a face to scare the child, the child screamed and clung to his mother who gave the young Death a warning look.

“I will never get these spirits to be scared of me”

“Why will they be scared of death? They are already dead after all” Mike replied

“Yet they feared my father”

“Maybe ‘Fear’ wasn’t the word, they respect him”

The young Death looked at him with interest “I think I am beginning to like you…the name is Maku by the way”

Mike laughed hard “You actually have a name!” he laughed harder until he couldn’t walk and the young Mr Death joined him
