Common items likes tooth pick, pencil etc we cannot produce. Let's start with common items found in every nigerian home before talking of luxury goods.

Small time now, u ll hear" Nigeria want to start the production of jets".

Reduce import duties

Create an enabling environment thro the improvement on infrastructures.

Encourage and assiat our local manugacturers

....then the petronage for locally produced goods will come provided the quality and price is competitive.

When was the last one saw a made in nigeria vehicle in mass production? How many Nigerians are driving cars that are made in Nigeria? How many Nigerians can afford cars that are manufactured by inosson and other local manufacturers? I find it hard to believe that these union men do not have an understanding of what free trade means and it's benefits to the masses,if import rates are reduced to ten percent alot of nigerians will be afford cars and this will also improve business for car dealers and clearing agents.

It is a tough one. To be honest, which local manufacturer is here? Let us face it. They import all raw materials and just assemble here. Is that manufacturing? Until Ajaokuta steel starts working, my view is we cannot manufacture.

Well, if govt wants to help them, let them make it mandatory for govt departments to patronize them.

Reduce the damn levy even to 5% and custom duty to 5% making it a total of 10% for 5 years used cars and new cars. Increase 6 years to 10 years to 20%, and make older ones cost more. No need to ban. Let us see how smugglers and thieves will operate. And this will help our roads too. Newer cars everywhere. Ozone layer will be protected too from smokes from older vehicles. More jobs - automobile experts and repairers will get more jobs. Polythecnics and universities graduates will move more into diagnostics and more technical areas. Training firms will come out too. Just let there be more sophisticated and better cars here.

Just imagine we pay 70% more for every new cars we buy from abroad to custom. Custom funny ooo. They do not want their own cut down but the other levy. Lol. Shipping cost is there ooo. And tips too. Meaning we pay 2 times for every new car we buy in Naija from abroad. So why will there be good cars in Nigeria? Why will the few who can afford it not oppress the common men. Why will the commen men not worship the few that are priviledged. Why will artists not show off common Toyoto SUV. Lol. Naija!

Honestly, wrong people in govt in this country. Even local manufacturers that cannot compete sef want to talk. Instead of them to always work hand in hand with these custom people too. Custom that bribery and corruption have killed. Local manufacturers better find ways to quickly negotiate before they are crushed finally. Na Buhari send you people? Na Jonathan you people can do shakara ooooo. Not Buhari. That one sabi good economic principles? A dey laugh in Swahili. grin

Can someone in simple sentence tell me the impact of the 25% import duty on local production of cars? The Government should reduce it with immediate alacrity so we can get newer models of cars from USA.

The cost of cars is too expensive and only a few groups of people are benefiting from it especially since USD went up.
so ignorant..Nawa for u..so how will local manufacturing be encouraged??..

Take it to 5%.

This 25% made cars too expensive for a salary earner.

When electricity is fixed, you reverse the %. The local manufacturers are not that serious. Even the local one is expensive. How many can even afford Innoson car.

3 gbosa for you! 10 (or 15% max) total duty is very ok. 70% is madness and one of the major killer policies of the GEJ government. Which global manufacturer will come and invest billions of dollars to build automobile plants in a country where you barely have 3hours steady power supply per day. Without fixing power and infrastructure, global automobile manufacturers will continue to avoid Nigeria. Please they should reduce it immediately so people can start driving the latest 2019 BMW 760i without needing to steal 1000 pants in a female hostel grin

They should slash the duty to 5%. Those local assemblers cannot even satisfy 2% of local demand but they insist on holding the entire population to ransom. Only in Nigeria where we have incompetent, corrupt and selfish leaders making policies to impoverish the citizenry

Those traders opposing the tarrif adjustment are mostly foreigners (Asians) who pay local labour slave wages and utilise a hundred different ways to evade tax and repatriate all their profits abroad. Evil bastards.

So because u prefer Japanese cars out manufacturing industries shud shut down bah? Even in the us they had to do smtn to protect their local industries. Japan will not come
To ur rescue if ur economy goes south. Do u think Japan buys foreign or American cars

They protected their developing industries when they were growing and now they are one of the best. Continue destroying ur own industries because of the Japanese instead of developing it. That’s why always be a useless 3rd world consumer country.

Ure here emotionally shouting wicked without thinking. It’s not even a ban bt higher taxes. Sm countries will even ban foreign cars totally.

They are not on the road because the govt allows u to buy Japanese and German cars. If they ban it outrightly u will see them on the streets like pure water. Ask China, Japan and sm Asian countries how they did it. We are too soft for our own good smtmes.

The only issue is the govt shud also support these industries with right environment, and technologies to improve their local cars to world class standards Bt they aren’t doing this so the industries are struggling.
