WARNING AGAINST THE DISEASES OF ENVY, JEALOUSY AND HATRED AMONG MUSLIMS
In the Name of Allah Most Gracious Most Merciful
All praises are due to Allah for His endless favours and His unique kindness. He gives His favours to everyone: those who obey and those who disobey Him. He directed His Prophet and of course all of us, to seek refuge from the evil of the witchcraft when they blow in the knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies. To Him belongs the Dominion and He Alone is to be relied on. We bear witness that none deserve to be worshipped but Him, to Him are attributed the most beneficial sayings. He commanded us to be just at all circumstances, which implies we must not envy one another, we must not hate one another and we must not interact with others in a dishonourable way. We also bear witness that our leader Muhammad (SAW) is His servant as well as Messenger and he is the truthful who always said the truth. He said in one of his traditions that:
‘I warn you against (the disease of) envy for it eats up the good deeds (of the envier) the way fire eats up dry wood.’
May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon the Prophet, his family members, his companions and those who follow their example of maintaining a clean heart and good etiquette.
O you Muslims! The diseases of envy and jealousy is indeed one of the highest diseases, and for one to be affected by it, is one of the highest and most difficult tests in life. This is because envy makes the envier to go astray, takes him farther away from Taqwa (The fear of Allah), it makes him rude and arrogant and makes him to follow his heart desire no matter how evil. The envier makes his heart to be very uncomfortable with the achievements of his fellow brother or sister and because there is nothing he/she can do to remove such blessings, it makes him sick whenever he sees the other person. His soul and life are a clear symbol of misery for it will seem to him/her, that Allah is partial in the provision of things. This makes the goodness in him/her to be so little or even nil, while his evil would be at its highest and he is always short of foresight.
The envier never sees any good in somebody and never speaks goods of anybody and his preoccupation is to plan negatively against others. Your beautiful clothes never go down well with him, even your healthy body makes him unhappy and so he opposes you openly and secretly. If you are educated, he says you are ignorant. If you are a petty trader or a common person, he never sees any dignity in you. If you are a businessperson, he considers you as one who cheats and eats out of the sweat of others. If you are a government official, he consider you to be the embodiment of corruption. If he sees you enjoying the same or similar privilege with him, or even when you have what he has not gotten, his heart becomes dark and gloomy.
All he wants is to be on top while others remain under his mercy or that nobody should have what he is not having. Unfortunately, you find a number of Muslims showing open enmity and hatred towards another brother because of envy founded and nurtured upon selfish motives.
For all these, such a person earns the anger of Allah and is causing himself to be withdrawn from the blessings of Allah for wishing such blessings to be withdrawn from others. The negative effects of envy is what makes Shaytan to be what he is, for he was jealous of the position of Prophet Adam (AS) above him and for envying the knowledge which Adam had got and not him. We all know that Shaytan used to be a righteous servant of Allah, residing in Paradise. He is what he is today, with bad image, surrounded by evils of whatever nature and certainty of being the leader of the occupants of Hell, because he envied Prophet Adam (AS). Adam (AS) was created from clay and was given more knowledge than him while he was created out of fire and he is supposed to be more superior. So, he felt too big to bow down to Adam even after he was commanded to do so by Allah. And as it happened to Shaytan it can happen to any other person; the end of those who envy others is total humiliation in this life and the next except if they repent.
The son of Prophet Adam (AS), Qaabil did not kill his brother Haabil except for his unhappiness that Allah accepted the offering of his brother and rejected his own: both of them offered sacrifice to Allah, and the person whose sacrifice was accepted was going to marry one of their sisters for the purpose of procreation. Allah accepted that of Haabil because his mind was more pious and purer than that of Qaabil. Allah says in the Glorious Qur’an:
فَطَوَّعَتْ لَهُ نَفْسُهُ قَتْلَ أَخِيهِ فَقَتَلَهُ فَأَصْبَحَ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
“So his soul (i.e. Qaabil) encouraged him and made it seem fair to him, to murder his brother; he murdered him and became one of the losers.”
For killing his brother because he did not want his brother to marry a woman he himself wanted to marry, Allah said he became a loser. Therefore, whoever envies his brother for what Allah gives him of blessings and favours shall end up a loser through ways he do not expect.
The people of Mecca refused to embrace Islam when it was revealed to them initially not because they actually disbelieved in it. It was out of envy that the religion was not brought by the rich and the powerful people of Arabia, but through an ordinary man: Muhammad the son of Abdullah, who was before then, an employee in the business of a woman. So they say:
وَقَالُوا لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ هَذَا الْقُرْآَنُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظِيمٍ
“Why is not this Qur’an sent down to some great men of the two towns (i.e. Mecca and Medina).”
And we all know that the hatred of Jews and their allies for Islam and Muslims was because of their envy. Allah says concerning them:
وَدَّ كَثِيرٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ لَوْ يَرُدُّونَكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ إِيمَانِكُمْ كُفَّارًا حَسَدًا مِنْ عِنْدِ أَنْفُسِهِمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الْحَقُّ
“Many of the people of the Scripture wishes they could turn you to disbelievers after you have believed, (and that) out of their envy of you, even after the truth has become manifest unto them.”
O you Muslims! Know it, that Islam totally prohibits envy. Allah ordered His Messenger to seek refuge against the evils of the envious people, because envy is just like a flaming fire in the heart of the envier, which he set to burn himself. An envious person wishes that the favours bestowed upon other people would no longer exist, and that such favours would become his only. Such a person is like an epidemic against whose ill effect the society should be warned. Islam is therefore calling Muslims to avoid, and to go farther away from envy and jealousy for what Allah have blessed others with, above them.
Envy when it occurs, usually takes place among counterparts, relations or people of similar characteristics. But as Muslims, we must learn to live with the fact that for us to establish a good and happy society is for us to be free from envy and hatred of one another, and that people of diverse and similar characteristic are created for the purpose of living together. Even though naturally, no one would like another person to be superior to him in any way, but this human weakness should not be a basis on which hatred and disunity would be nurtured. Moreover, for us to achieve this, we must have confidence in Allah and be contented with His Decrees.
May Allah include us among the occupants of the Paradise. May He forgive and overlook our shortcomings and forgive the sins of all Muslim men and women.

PART II
Glory be to Allah Who is very strict in His commands and wise in enforcing His wills. He commanded that He should be thanked and glorified just as He commanded that He be worshipped sincerely. May His peace and blessing be upon our leader Muhammad (SAW) who says:
‘I warn you of envy because envy eats up good deeds the way fire eats up wood.’
Despite this warning, today, you will see a Muslim hating another Muslim simply because of the progress the other person is making in life. This no doubt is a madness caused by severe illness of the heart. The Prophet (SAW) has told us already:
‘Behold, in the body there is a flesh, if it is good, the whole body is good, and if it is bad the whole body is bad. And that flesh is the heart.’
Muslims are seriously warned to move away from Shaytan, because he is to them an open enemy. He is a business person and he sells his commodities to whoever presents himself as a buyer. He sells hatred and envy to those who have knowledge and those who have attained a certain degree of achievement in life. He sells injustice and maltreatment to leaders who take charge of peoples’ affairs and their close advisers. He sells deception to women and those whose heart are either weak or dead. And he sells cheating in its entire ramification to businessmen and women. The worst trade is that of Shaytan, the worst commodity are the things he sells and the worst person is the one who falls for the advert of Shaytan and buys out of his commodities.
We all know that Muslims were not divided into sects and groups; their might was not greatly reduced until when they allow hatred and envy to form part of their character and competition towards gaining more than one another in worldly things is evidently seen to be promoted among them. We cannot run away from the fact that, there will never be unity and progress in a society where one brother is unhappy with his other brother simply because the other brother have gotten more wealth, knowledge or charisma, or because one is having a higher position than another. Allah Himself did not create people to be the same in all spheres of life; some must be higher than others. He says to the envious people:
أَهُمْ يَقْسِمُونَ رَحْمَةَ رَبِّكَ نَحْنُ قَسَمْنَا بَيْنَهُمْ مَعِيشَتَهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَرَفَعْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ دَرَجَاتٍ لِيَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا سُخْرِيًّا
“Is it they who would portion out the mercy of your Lord? It is We Who portion out between them their livelihood in this world, and we raised some of them above others in ranks, so that some may employ others in their work.”
People will still be good so long as they do not envy each other, but once they cannot control their heart, they will corrupt the relationships between each other and will be doomed to loss because envy erases all traces of goodness in the heart of the envier. The Prophet (SAW) says:
‘Envy spoils Eeman (faith) the way time spoils or changes the taste of honey.’
For this and many, more reasons O Muslims! Do not hate, envy or be jealous of one another. Do not create unnecessary hatred among yourselves and do not interact with, or treat one another unjustly. You are therefore supposed to be competing in doing good deeds and not to envy the good in others.
May Allah protect our hearts from the wound of envy and from the evil of the envier when he envies. May He also save us from the evils of those who commit evil; men and women, the ones we know and the ones we don’t know, from among the humans and the Jinns.
