Tasleem(Greetings): How To Correctly Give And Respond by Lukgaf(m): 2:26pm On Feb 05, 2019
Without doubt, Muslims are known for their unique mode of greetings i.e. Tasleem (Salamo/greetings). Even some non-muslims imitate these ways among themselves and has become a notable culture in some part of the world (Nigeria inclusive). For full history and etiquette of greeting, see, https://ouwbmmsa./2015/06/23/surah-an-nisa-ayah-86/.

However, it is good to note that since there are rewards associated with giving/responding Tasleem, hence, the etiquette should be carefully followed so as to ensure the full reward is earned.

To give Tasleem(greeting or Salamo), it is recommended to say Asalam Alaykum (May peace of God be unto you), Asalam Alaykum WaramotuLah (May Peace and mercy of God be unto you), Asalam Alaykum WaramotuLah Wabarakatuhu ( May Peace, mercy and blessings of God be unto you) [/b]as the case may be. Meanwhile, the way people use to greet now especially on social media such as Asalam, Salam, Aslm, slm, As, Asww e.t.c has no evidence and meaning in Islam. So, kindly let us kindly refrain from using any of the above marked red.

Similarly, to respond Tasleem properly, simply say [b]Wa alekum Salam (May peace of God be unto you too), Wa alekum Salam WaramotuLah (May peace and mercy of God be unto you too), Wa alekum Salam WaramotuLah Wabarakatuh (May peace, mercy and blessings of God be unto you too)
as the case may be and not the following marked red Ami alekum Salam, Wls, Wsww, Ws e.t.c as it is well known in our society.

Good, now that we know the correct way of giving and responding. It is imperative to note also that Allah says in the only Quran that:

And when you are greeted with a salutation, greet with one better than it, or return the same. Surely, Allah is the reckoner over everything. (Suratul Nisa Verse 86)

Scholars of Islam infer from the above verse that, if someone gives Tasleem, it is good to return with what is better than it or return the same (the return what is better is more rewardable).

That is, If for example,

Mr X says Asalam Alaekum WaramotuLah, the etiquette is to return with either Wa alekum Salam WaramotuLah or Wa alekum Salam WaramotuLah Wabarakatuh (the latter is more rewardable in this case as you can see from their meanings). Hence it is not good and Sunnah to reply with Wa alekum Salam if someone says Asalam Alaekum WaramotuLah Wabarakatuh.

N.B: This is applicable to all our dealings including social media usage too.

I hope we now choose to earn reward and pray for ourselves while greeting instead of using greetings that has no meaning.

And Allah know the best and we pray He grant us beneficial understanding. Wasalam Alaykum WaramotuLah Wabarakatuh!

Amin wa alaikumus salam warahamatullahi wabarakatuhu

Allah has fulfilled our religion, everything has been explained in details.
[5. Al-Maeda, Verse 3]
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
