HOW TO BE SAFE IN YOUR HOTEL WHEN YOU FLY TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY

Seeing a new country for the first time is an exciting and emotionally fueled experience. With a plethora of local delicacies and the amazing experience of being immersed in a culture and its local people – the list of places and things to do when you fly to a foreign country are endless.

It’s also perfectly normal to feel a little bit scared walking around an unfamiliar landscape, especially if you find yourself in the situation of lost luggage or falling prey to thieves and pickpockets.

To minimize your risk of becoming a victim of criminals while you’re abroad, we gathered the essential safety tips that we strongly advise you to practice. Here’s a complete guide below.

SAFETY TIPS DURING CHECK-IN

Whether you choose to stay in a high-end hotel or budget-friendly accommodation, you should never leave your luggage unattended. Always have your bags with you when you go to the reception to settle payments or when dealing with other hotel reservation concerns.

You should also attach a unique or personalized identifier like a bag tag, ribbon or sticker so you can avoid accidentally swapping your bags with another hotel guest.

If the hotel management offers to transfer you to a new room located on a higher floor, consider taking this opportunity. Statistics suggest that ground floor hotel rooms are more susceptible to break-ins.

PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY AND CARD INFORMATION

Standard hotel check-in procedure requires guests to present their card for identity verification. When you present your card, make sure you never leave it unattended. Credit card thieves nowadays use high-tech equipment like RFID scanners. They can use stolen card information to apply for loans and purchase items.

Once the receptionist hands back your card, examine it carefully. Make sure that your card is not altered or replaced. Also, you must double check if the card is indeed yours.

STAYING SAFE IN THE HOTEL ROOM

After you secure a room for your stay, you will be escorted by one of the staff to your accommodation. If he/she carries your bag to the room, leave the door open until he/she leaves. Check the place to make sure that it’s free from uninvited guests.

Once you’re alone, walk around the room and examine the doors, entryways, and windows. They should be equipped with quality locks. If you spot damages or other issues, call the front desk about it. Politely ask for a room transfer if they can’t resolve the issue.

Aside from the locks, you must also check the mirrors, air vents, wall mounted lights and ceiling lights for hidden cameras.

Before leaving your room, there are a few things you have to do. First, you need to secure your valuables. Never leave your travel documents, gadgets and other important items laying on random places in the room. Keep them in the safe instead.

You can also leave your most essential belongings in the master safe of the hotel. Make sure to ask for a receipt and clarify any concerns regarding the coverage they will provide in case your valuables go missing

Westminster Security, a security company in London recommends practicing personal security tips and techniques such as:

1. Planning your travel route before you leave the hotel.
2. Avoiding dark alleys, wastelands, and other risky shortcuts.
3. Keeping your phone secured in your pocket when you walk around busy streets.
4. Staying completely alert and attentive to your surroundings.
5. If listening to music, audiobooks or guided tours via headphones, try to keep the volume to a minimum when you stroll around the city.
6. Never leave your phone unattended when you eat in a restaurant or spend time in a local cafe.
7. You should also carry the hotel’s business card when you roam around the city. Use it in case you need a hotel transfer.

If you’re visiting a country that speaks a different language, you should bring a phrasebook. You should at least know how to say yes, no, sorry, thank you and help in the local language.

To avoid disrespecting the locals, be sure to read about their culture. Make sure you know the proper attire to wear and the gestures and behavior that they consider offensive.

If you lose your key card or if it gets stolen, report the incident to the hotel reception right away. If possible, ask to be transferred to a new room.

Lastly, you must keep abreast of the country’s social and political climate. Avoid going near conflict zones, territorial boundaries or terrorist/extremist hotspots.

LAST IMPORTANT TIPS

Traveling to a new place need shouldn’t be overwhelming or scary. Instead, it should be a fun learning experience where you can discover unique cultures and traditions, make new friends, taste local cuisine and appreciate the world’s bounties.

No matter where you plan to go, it’s crucial to stay alert and attentive because danger lurks everywhere, even in travel destinations deemed safe and secured for foreign visitors. Being more mindful of your safety throughout the trip will allow you to enjoy a memorable and hassle-free vacation.
