The wife of the president Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has asked Nigerians as they go to the polls on Saturday, to decide whether the poor should become poorer and the rich richer or a society where the gap begins to be reduced.

She stated this on Thursday while presenting empowerment packs to 1,250 women and youths from the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.

In a statement by her media adviser Adebisi, Olumide Ajayi, quoted Mrs. Buhari, as saying that poverty is one of the indices that encourage people to embrace vices like terrorism, kidnapping, and begging.

Earlier, the Director-General, National Directorate of Employment (NDE) Dr. Nasir, Mohammed Argungu, disclosed since 2014, the revenue allocation to the agency had not changed.

However, the agency was able to train 861,234 women and youths from 2015 to date, compared to 4,832 trained in 2014/15

The programme was organised by NDE in collaboration with The Future Assured initiative of the wife of the president and Defence and Police officers Wives Association (DEPOWA)

The beneficiaries who were drawn from the six local government areas of Abuja went home with cosmetology-starter packs worth N40.000 cash.

TheCable understands that at least three million Nigerians have slipped into extreme poverty between November 2018 and February 2019.

According to the World Poverty Clock, created by Vienna-based World Data Lab, 91.16 million Nigerians were living below a dollar a day as of February 13, 2019.

In June 2018, the Brookings Institution projected that Nigeria had overtaken India, as the poverty capital of the world, with 86.9 million extremely poor people.

This was further confirmed by the British Prime Minister Theresa May, who said Nigeria had become home to the largest number of very poor people in the world, putting the figures at 87 million.

Today, India has 48.7 million people living in poverty, from 73 million in June 2018. By implication, India has pulled out a minimum of 24 million people from poverty in less than eight months
