BVN: A Data Reselling Website Requests For BVN From Its Users by joefit4gur(m): 9:05am On Feb 22, 2019
MobileNig.net has just recently issued a mandatory upgrade to all of its users who want to buy internet data from them. They are requesting for their user's BVN details. They claimed it would safe and they only wanted to use it to verify the bank account used to make transfers to their account and or for users who want them to transfer money to their account.

1. No data is safe anywhere, even top websites get hacked and personal user details get released
2. Not all of your users request that you send money to their bank accounts
3. MobileNig is not a fintech company

Isn't there a body in Nigeria that caters for data privacy and would sue bodies that request for BVN details illegally?

While not in support of the BVN request, its in the best interest of the platform and users that this is done. Data and Call Airtime remains the easiest and fastest way through which hacked bank account funds can be spent without trace as our mobile SIM card registration is not top notch and free from issues.

Requesting for BVN from users buying is only a way of ensuring stolen ATM cards and Bank account details are not used on the merchant's site so as to absolve them from any blame of being a conduit for fraudulent transactions undecided

Users have every right to reject such request and move on if the site's security is adjudge not safe enough to part with such sensitive data. If you find them safe to part with your ATM card details, BVN details shouldn't be an issue.

1. If a bank account is hacked, that would mean the hacker already has access to passwords / PINs and definitely the BVN already, so no deal here. The victim is f**ked either way.

2. A user's ATM card details is not entered directly on their platform, a PCI complaint company like PayStack or Flutterwave is integrated to their website, hence the card details are actually entered into Paystack's website, and they have a great deal of security than regular websites.

3. For one, I know MobileNig.net website is not safe. Once a potential hacker with the right skills know they acquire BVN details, it's only a matter of time before they find a vulnerability and make away with the data.

4. Even though they said funds can't be transferred with a user's BVN, they get access to private data about your financial life and that in it self is invasion of privacy.
