“It all happened on a sunny afternoon; I was in the school library reading for
the upcoming exams when David came into the library. We exchanged
pleasantries as he sat beside me to read. Suddenly, I had an attack being
asthmatic. I took my bag and frantically searched for my inhaler only to
discover that I left it on my table back in the hostel. Quickly, he brought out
an inhaler from his pocket and gave it to me after which he took me out of
the library.
After some minutes, I gained my consciousness. "Thank you" I told him.
"Shall we go back to the library?" I asked him. “You need to rest” he replied
me. He accompanied me to my hostel and it was then he told me that he
was also asthmatic and I got to know that we were in the same
department. After that day, we became best of friends. One thing led to the
other and we started dating despite the fact that I was in my first year at
the University while he was in his second year.
Hmmm, David! A tall, elegant, handsome, smart, charismatic, intelligent,
“naira loaded” and delightful young man. He was so charming and easy
going that virtually all the girls in the department wanted him for
themselves. Ever since David came into my life, my financial life changed
for better and every lady in my department wanted to be me. He spent so
much for me that I nearly cursed my parent for been poor.
Back at home, we could hardly afford three square meals daily. My parents
were poor illiterates but they valued education. My father was in form 3
when he lost his parents to a ghastly motor accident while my mother never
stepped school in her life time yet they made all efforts to get me educated
being their only child. I remembered my mother sold some of her valuables
and my father borrowed money to pay my school fees and other basic
recurrent expenditures when I got admission to the university.
David rented a well furnished 2 bedroom flat off-campus. Therefore, in my
first semester, 200level, I moved out of the hostel and began to cohabitate
with him. My parents were very concerned about my survival without
requesting money from them unlike in my first semester, 100level. I lied to
my parents that a philanthropic male lecturer was taking care of me and
some other students who were financially handicapped.
David was so caring and I loved him so much. He had seen and tasted “all
my private and public limited enterprises”. I mean we did things together
and we had sex almost every day. David showered me with a lot of gifts,
care and attention. He helped me during tests and exams being a senior
colleague. Believe me; life was very sweet with David that I forgot the child
of whom I was. Almost everyone on campus knew us as lovers.
During holidays, I would go to David's family house instead of going to see
my parent. Everyone in his family referred to me as "Iyawo wa" (our wife). I
would help his mother to wash her clothes, go to the market and do other
house chores. Everyone in his family including his maternal grandparent
loved me so much that they never failed to shower me with gifts anytime I
visited them.
We won the best couple award in the University several times. My friends
always prayed for a guy like David. David got me a car on my 21st birth
anniversary. Lest I forget, I had numerous abortions during our relationship.
David was not ready to be a father neither was I ready to be a baby mama.
If I wouldn't exaggerate, I had more than eight abortions for David. The
doctor told me after the ninth abortion that my two fallopian tubes had been
ruptured and a surgery had to be carried out on me. David was sober, he
cried all night promising to marry me and we both agreed on adopting
babies. I counted on David: I believed David. David got me deflowered; he
never caught me cheating on him with any other guy. Honestly, I thought he
was an angel not knowing he was a devil incarnate.
If not time that told me, I never knew David was a womanizer, although I
knew him to be a drunkard. One thing I admired about him was that he was
a cheerful giver. We went to different motherless babies homes every
weekend and one of his aims in life was to have a motherless baby home.
However, my father warned me several times never to get married to David
for a reason best known to him but I heeded not to his counsel. David
waited for me to complete the compulsory one year National Youth Service
Corps (NYSC) and we got married. Our wedding ceremony was the talk of
the country; the whole world attended the wedding ceremony. My mother
was happy at least to have brought me up to that level and she was happy
to become a grandmother as soon as possible not knowing that her
daughter is an empty vessel. After some months, David opened a big
supermarket for me where I spent most of my time. Money was always
coming in for David but I never knew the source. His choicest hobby was
travelling. He spent days and weeks outside home in the name of business
summits. I believed him to be a general merchant as he had claimed.
Besides, we both studied business administration in the university.
Eight months after our wedding party, it was around 2:00am, I was seriously
pressed, hence, I left the bedroom for toilet leaving my husband, David alone
in the room. Suddenly, I heard a heavy sound on our door as some people
broke the door to our bedroom. I wanted to rush out but I cautioned myself,
walked on my toes peeping from the door. I staggered, alas! I saw three (3)
hefty, masked and fully armed robbers. One of them hit David heavily and
ruthlessly on his cheek. The other one punched his mouth and blood
splashed from David’s mouth immediately. I became a living dead where I
was. The third one, I guess their boss said “David, have you seen what you
caused for yourself? You know our rule and whoever betrays shall die.”.
David painfully replied “Lord Jaguar Sir, I said I’m not interested in the
robbery business again. We’ve been sold to this ungodly and illegal business
since our early days in the university. We’ve had enough money and
properties that can sustain our lives even that of our children. With due
respect Boss; I’m out of the cult”. I was shocked to hear such satanic
dialogue from my husband. I silently asked myself, is David a robber?.
Jaguar chucked and said “David, I’ve known you for a very long time to be a
stubborn fellow. You know the covenant we made at the shrine. Whoever
leaves this cult will forfeit everything he has. Anyways, here is the good
news for you. We’ve killed your parents and everyone we met in their house.
And now, you will not only exit this cult but also exit this world”. Jaguar had
not finished his last statement before the other two guys fired David to
death. They left, having looked around if there is anyone else to kill but I
thank God they didn’t see me though; I almost entered the WC in the toilet.
Hmmm! I quickly rushed to the bedroom, alas! I found my David, lying
lifelessly in the pool of his own blood.
Few days after the brief investigation conducted by the Police, the remains
of David, his parents and other members of the family that were killed with
him were buried. Amazingly, while giving the last respect to David and his
family at the burial ground, two women showed up as David’s legally
married wives with evidences. The first woman brought a two year old
handsome baby boy that looked exactly like David while the other woman
carried a five months foetus for David according to her.
Surprisingly, David had a will to favour all his three wives and family. 35% of
his total assets goes to the wife with a baby boy, 27% to the wife with a
foetus, 23% for his siblings, 10% for me and the remaining 5% to a
Motherless Babies Home. Thank God that the supermarket was opened in
my name, I would have forfeited it.
Hmmm! There is nothing sweet in my life again. My life became shattered; I
regret falling into the wrong hands. I became an old shadow of myself. I
abused my body. I ruined my life because of the pleasures of the world. My
womb is gone; my integrity is not there any longer. If I had known; I wouldn't
have ventured into a relationship outside the will of God. My life is a mess
and I hate myself every time I look into the mirror to see my reflection.
Truly, “she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth (1Timothy 5:6).”
The old woman told us her story at her 50th birth anniversary.
"Today, I am fifty years of age and I have decided to tell you my story so
that you will never make the same mistake I made because I see a bright
future ahead of you” said the old woman.
{We left her with ocean of tears dripping from our eyes. Wehad to pen down
her story so that we can all learn from it}.
“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that
committeth fornication sinneth against his own body” (1Corinthians 6:18)
“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with
them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (2Timothy 2:22)
