In spite of the chronic power shortages in Akwa Ibom state, the $1.6bn QIPP power plant being built in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom is going be to supplying power exclusively to Kano.

The Kano State Governor, Ganduje has signed an agreement with the managing director of the transmission company of Nigeria that ensures that all of the power put on-grid by the power plant will be delivered equivalently to Kano.

Governor Udom Emmanuel has not commented on why Akwa Ibom state will not be receiving any of the power generated, in spite of announcing the initiative at the South South regional workshop and stakeholders forum on the ease of doing business in Nigeria held, in Uyo.

Akwa Ibom citizens are perturbed at the development, at a recent forum of engineers held in Abak, the discussion was heated, with many engineers insisting that the state government ensure that at least 100mw of the power generated be reserved for use by Akwa Ibomites.

The state government has not made any moves to fulfil the requests by the citizens and has not offered any comments so far on the matter.

Here's a novel solution just buy the power. Kano is recieving the power because they are buying it. They signed a power purchase agreement with the company. The company is the business of selling power so there's no need to cry.

Kano stepping in to buy bulk electricity actually helped the company stay in business. They needed money to finance debt since Nigeria bulk Electricity Trading company doesnt want to assume more risk. Akwa Ibom didnt care to step in financially in this project. This despite fact the plant means jobs and tax revenue.

NNPC told Reuters one of the reasons the Qua Iboe plant (QIPP), which is due to be built in the southern state of Akwa Ibom, had been delayed was because NBET appeared reluctant to commit to new projects to avoid increasing its liabilities.

"The continued delay relates to the current cashflow challenges at NBET, as highlighted by the Azura project," a spokesman for NNPC said in an emailed statement. "This concern is justified by the fact that NBET is yet to see an improvement in collections from DISCOs (distribution companies)."

Akwa Ibom also has it's own power plant they can just upgrade it. The recieved approval years ago to do that aswell. If they invested in that there might be any power shortage in the state.

It's a power purchase agreement. And by the way, that a power plant was constructed in your state doesn't mean you own the power plant.

They should blow it up right?

You are certainly not from Akwa Ibom for you to make that statement.

Just like the wise King Solomon deduced, requesting the child be killed implies you don't own it.

Go to the cave from whence you came.

You have no use in civilization.

The power plant is privately owned and kano has offered to bulk buy the power produced. Simple. Akwa Ibom can buy electricity from private investors but floating an airline, an ego trip, is the governor's priority, not providing electricity. The terrorist that is talking blowing up the power plant should know that if that should happen kano loses nothing, they will buy electricity elsewhere and Akwa Ibom is the loser in terms of jobs and taxes.

The law stipulates that any power generated from any GENCO be it private or state owned will be transferred first to the national grid from where it will be distributed to DISCOs.

This arrangement favours the north since other than hydropower they have no other means of generating power.

And if you factor that under this satanic tribalistic govt, tarrif rates are highest in the SS and SE than any other region with the NE and NW paying as low as 14 naira per KW against 27. Naira in the SS and SE you will know this is not about profit making for the GENCO but a deliberate act of subsidising the impoverished North with free electrucuty. I say free electricity because most of the north does not have prepaid meters and the estimated bills per month is virtually nothing when compared to what we in the better south pay for electricity.

Ask yourself why the FG has refused to allow independent power plants to operate in the SS and SE but allows state owned diesel plants to be set up in the north.

You're rambling like mad man. There's nothing illegal about this arrangement. If there is file a lawsuit. TCN is taking power to the national grid and suppyling it to Kano for a fee. Only you would be dumb enough to believe they will supply power for free. How will the company pay debts or mske profits if thats the case.

You're last question shows you're ignorant of basic facts. Ibom Power plant is an IPP. Azure power plant is an IPP. They both work an supply power to people. Lol the sokoto power plant is first IPP in the north not Nigeria.

QIPP has also assumed completion risk of a transmission line from Ikot-Abasi to Ikot-Ekpene in order to ensure supply of power to the national grid.

“The Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has given firm assurance that once power is delivered to Ikot Ekpene, TCN will be able to deliver an equivalent amount of power to Kano on a binding contractual basis for a fee. TCN will assume full liability for power delivered to the grid and not transmitted as contracted,” he said.

President Commissions First Independent Power Plant

Nigeria's first ever Independent Power Plant (IPP), capable of generating 480 mega watts of electricity, with possible expansion to 960 mega watts, has been commissioned by President Olusegun Obasanjo at Okpai in Delta State.

The commissioning of the plant represents a significant stride in reducing gas flaring - 75 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (scfd) currently being flared will feed the plant.

The $480million project by Agip Oil Company Limited (NOAC) was constructed by NNPC/Agip Joint Venture, and will be contributing 15% to the current generation by the National Electric Power Authority (NNPC).

The Agip Kwale/Okpai plant is a combined cycle plant and also the first of its king in Africa.

The IPP, which is to utilize 75million scfd of gas per day, is the first in a series of IPPs planned to be constructed in the country by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its joint partners to meet President Obasanjo's target of generating 10,000 mega watts of electricity for the nation by 2007.

A contract is a contract. Kano state signed a Power Purchase contract with the power generator so the power goes to them. Akwa Ibom should likewise enter into a similar arrangement with a similar company.
