The Ikeja High Court Yesterday 8th March 2019 sentenced to death by hanging Lekan Shonde (52), a dock worker who killed his wife Ronke(36) a banker at their residence in Egbeda, Lagos, three years ago.
Justice Josephine Oyefeso while presenting the Judgement found him guilty of a one count charge brought against him by the Lagos State Government.

The case has been in court since 2016 and finally came to rest yesterday with the verdict of Justice Oyefeso which was captured thus, "the act was intentionally done. I find the defendant guilty". She further proclaimed from her legal high throne "In line with section 223 of Criminal law of Lagos 2015, this is the sentence of the court upon you, Olelekan Shonde, that you are to hang by the neck until you are dead. May the Lord have Mercy on you".

THE GENESIS
Mr and Mrs. Olelekan lived on Tiemo close, off Awori Street, in Egbeda Idimu area and their marriage of Eight years was blessed with a Boy(6) and a girl(4). They were a perfect happy contented couple, so was the picture that even Neighbors and Church members saw perfection in their union.
However, the Shonde's perfect bubble got busted on May 6th,2016 when their Nanny Sola Adamo lekan who normally came around to prepare their kids for school showed up at her normal time of 6am and pounded severally on the front door of the upstair flat of the couple and got no response. In an interview she claimed this was was strange because Madam normally opened the door for her with only a slight knock from her each time she came and she knew Oga was not around because he leaves by 5am every morning for his Dock work. On this fateful however she went downstairs to ask their neighbor about the Family as no one was responding to her loud knock, it was while she was speaking with the neighbor that the Oldest Child of the family called out to her and told her that his Mother refused to wake up.

THE REVELATION
The door was forced open by the Police who were contacted by the neighbors when it became obvious that all the mad pounding was not waking Ronke up, on entrance she was discovered face up and lifeless on the ground of their Living room.
Mr. Olelekan Shonde who later handed himself over to the police three days after the discovery of his wife's corpse confessed that he had only slapped Ronke from behind a day before her corpse was found, his confession went thus, "On May 5th,2016, I heard my wife speaking to someone on the telephone saying, 'Kayode you are sweet; what did you use in sleeping with me', I got furious and slapped her from behind, she fell as a result of the slap then later stood up and apologized to me before going into the bathroom to take her bath". Mr. Olelekan went on to say that he saw her on the couch with her phone beside her the next morning and just dropped her Transport money for her as usual then locked the door with his own key without suspecting anything was wrong.
In subsequent interviews, Olelekan revealed that he ran away upon hearing the news of his wife demise because his father had advised him to stay away for fear that people might attack him.

THE JUDGEMENT
Justice Josephine Oyefeso in sentencing Shonde to death took Judicial cognizance of the analysis of the Pathologist Dr. Shokunle Shoyemi, that examination revealed old and fresh injuries on Ronke. Justice Oyefeso affirmed that the bruises on the deceased cheeks, blood collection in her brain, swollen brain and other multiple injuries could not have been self inflicted injuries. In view of this, she stated that the defendant was very economical with the truth when he said that he only slapped her when he overheard her phone conversation with a lover, his claim does not match the degree of autopsy report.

It was in view of the above findings that Justice Oyefeso held that Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 prescribed that the person who commit murder shall be sentenced to Death.

What more can we say... We only wish that the good lord have Mercy on Olelekan Shonde and give the two kids of these tragic couple the stamina to confront society and the muscle to survive without the love and comfort of their parents...
