Every time I come across talk of this 'research' carried out by 'scientists', some important details are always missing:

- The names of the scientists/geneticists who conducted the research.
- The year the research was conducted.
- The place it was conducted.
- The medical/scientific journal that published the findings of the 'research'.

Yeah. Personal experiences, stories, etc. They are not based on facts but what I see around me.

My dad married a super intelligent woman and gave birth to geniuses that are always top of our respective classes it's just Nigeria that is stopping us from reaching our full potential for change.

Some other people I see around that their mums are just average regardless of their dad's potential, usually struggle. My FIL always says, if your kids are dull, it's because you married a dull wife. That his family are noted for intelligence so no one should come and pollute their pool.

I like your honesty, your theories are more personal than scientific.
There are equally super-intelligent men married to women with average intelligence who ended up having super-intelligent kids. I guess you may have read about the Lawyer dad whose children are all lawyers, or the Pilot dad whose children are towing the same profession.

This article and others like it on the internet are also 'anecdotal' which is the point i was actually trying to make with my question. None of the writers is a geneticist, biologist, or scientist, and even if we are to assume they are, where did they conduct the research and which journal was it published.

It sounds really good to hear that we inherit intelligence from our mothers because naturally most people are more psychologically & emotionally attached to their mothers than fathers (this is the nurture theory).
This is why its so easy to just believe the hypothesis without bothering to verify the facts, which is exactly what the writers bank on to get people to accept it. Basic reverse psychology at play.

This is not breaking news na. It has been for a long time. Children get at least 50% of their intelligence from their mother not father. It constitutes the natural aspect of intelligence which is different from the nurture aspect (environmental factors).

The intelligent 'gene' is on the X chromosome which men don't give during copulation. Women have XX and men XY. We can even say that boys inherit their intelligence from their mothers not fathers. Then again, the mitochondria is inherited from the mother. Though mitochondrial genes might not seem to be genes “for” intelligence, however, brains are huge consumers consumers of metabolic energy (the brain consumes 25% of body glucose) - which is supplied by mitochondria. Better mitochondria are likely to translate to better brain function.

Additionally, if one says his mom wasn't intelligent but her children are, you have to consider the environment the mom grew in and her lineage. Her mom could have been very intelligent. Another factor is that some cases are exceptions not the norm.

That you do not believe the study or such studies doesn't mean there are false. If you disagree, you could conduct yours and publish it for peer review.

It’s a scientific study that has been out for a while. These people just copy and pasted it. Google is your friend. By the way, the career path a child chooses has no bearing on the mothers intelligence. As long as they are successful in their chosen careers.

For it to be a research, they have to first be able to isolate the gene which is responsible for intelligence (wish them good luck in that), then they have to show how it is transmitted ONLY from mother to child and what miraculously happens to the intelligent/stupid gene (he must have one or the other) present in the father.

yeah, read this too. Pretty much touched on most of the reservations I had while reading the PsychologySpot article.

The funny part is that on the comments section of that article most persons just accepted it, and then went on to start explaining how they are intelligent like their mothers. Same way people are acting on this thread.

None seemed to realise that the sources were mostly pro-nurture (like breastfeeding and post birth interaction). Even the ones that had 'gene' in the title didn't even prove that intelligence is inherited at all, much less from the mother.

The way people swallow opinions disguised as facts ehn...

I believe this but its scary cos the smart, intelligent wisdom in my family runs same way in my maternal home, but my dad's side is not that bright and now we the guys have inherited the smartness and super intelligence from our mum, but my fear is, I really pray and desire my children to inherit my intelligent, creative and entrepreneurial success gene cos I don't know how smart the lady I might end up marrying will be.
