Test for ammonium salts When dry ammonium salt is heated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, NH3 gas is evolved. NH4Cl + NaOH gives NaCl + H2O + NH3 NH3 gas evolved in the above reaction has a characteristic odour and changes moist red litmus paper to blue.
