I love Nigeria with all my heart, its the best place you can have fun and feel alive, i don't support her way of composing the post but her aim of it was being scared, and insecure. What is wrong with that?? what is wrong with giving her some sisterly and brotherly advice? In summer i'll be moving to another town in Norway, for my university right?? I'M bleeping SCARED!! That's just a human feeling. I'm a whole lot excited, but i'm still nervous to the change of enviroment, you can't help wondering what its going to look like. On more than a 1001 occassions, i've asked friends who live there, what is it like?? how is this, how is that?? thats just life!! This is in the same country just another town not to talk of a whole different country. Yes we know that Naija is the best, lovely and all that, but she doesn't, she had to build up thoughts on what people said ![]() There was this thread on why our youths all want to travel out of the country(Nigeria) some will do anything humanly possible to achieve that, so tell me why?? Lets not all hide behind i love my country story! Most of us are in europe, why the hell aren't we in Nigeria?? our dearly beloved country! Afterall there are schools in Nigeria, you can do business in Nigeria, so why aren't we?? Have we ever tried to fly bac to Nigeria and meet some air-port workers who said "no you can't travel back?? I hear some adults saying when i've made it money-wise i'll leave, some will say if not for the money, why will someone leave africa to come here and suffer?? well my dears if money wasn't all that important, why can't they just go back and live with whatever they see?? Please lets face facts here, we love our country so much, but there is still something however little it might be that we love to have been here ![]() |

nigeria is not perfect. we never said it was. but it beats me hollow when people front like they are petrified of kidnappings and blah blah. who would want to kidnap your sour ass? ![]() dont they see all the muggings, rapes, killings, suicides, pervs, pedophiles, necrophiliacs, armed gun men, drive bys that take place here? dont those worry them? they live here up to their eyelids in debt to finance school and just to survive and they have the guts to talk smack about the motherlan'? please! ![]() |

Many of us have various reasons for living outside the Nigeria we all proclaim to love. - to make for ourselves and children a far better future than can be guaranteed by the Nigerian state - just to be named among the "priviledged few" to have lived "abroad" - it is people in this class that quibble about insects, mosquitoes, starbucks and sushi. |

starbucks and sushi my crusty feet. all the homeless white people here never taste the starbucks sef! ![]() |

Re: I'm Scared Of Going To Nigeria by spoilt(f): 3:10am On Apr 29, 2007 |
dont mind them. whites are accepting international jobs in africa more and more everyday. they'll soon over take port harcourt with all the enjoyment! |
Re: I'm Scared Of Going To Nigeria by cuteass1(f): 3:10am On Apr 29, 2007 |
spoilt: So tell me dear, the ones that have been kidnapped and killed in the past, were their asses smooth?? Its just being at the wrong place at the wrong time ![]() It doesn't happen in Nigeria alone, but when you're moving to somewhere unfamiliar, life has a way of making it seem to you as if "that place" is the end of the world. Tell me something if it wasn't Nigeria she was talking about, would we have been here making all these arguements?? spoilt: Well thats just it, our fears sometimes blinds us to the realities of life, we tend to see things for what they're not. I remember talking to my cousin last year, and i was like i prefer living in England to living in the Us, because ever since the tower incident i've been scared to death about the place. And he was like, well what about the train incident that happened in London. I now said, well i'll stay put in Norway, and then he finally said, "what makes you think Norway is anything more secured". That was when i started thinking straight again!! FEARS OF LIFE!! D Truth: Just to prove that it goes both ways, what you're condemning someone else loves, and what you love, someone else doesn't necessarily have to love ![]() |

Hi choongtin darling, First of all, Is that you on your profile? just curious If yes you're pretty and look like a white girl. Nigeria is not as horrible as you think it is. . . .There are lovely places in nigeria, lots of them. When you get to naija I'll advice you to visit abuja. . .And you'll forget you're even in nigeria. Idon't blame you. . . I think if your parents have been allowing you to visit nigeria during the holls. . .You won't be Scared! About mosquitoes, insects and stuff, it's inevitable. . .start getting used to it! I have cousins like you, at the mention of bees, mosquitoes,or cockroach, They start crying. . And they told me that they will never go to Africa because they hate insects. Although they are still young. . .but I feel sorry for them. Believe me, there's no place like home. ALWAYS REPRESENTING! Green is ma home. |

busygirl: Long story! She's pretty because she looks like a white girl? Puleeeeeeeeese! ![]() Mosquitoes, bees and cockroaches? Of course if you are not hygeinice that is going to be an issue. What of the mosquitoes that spread westnile virus here in the US? Did Americans run to Germany? I dont like calling a spade a shovel. If you dont like Africa (by the way its a continent not a nation! Someone remind Ryan Seacrest!) please stay in your golden homes in the US or Europe. |

@cuteass speaking abt skools being in nigeria, there are nt as many schools in nigeria as there is in the u.s nd uk moreover not all the born americans nd those from the uk want to go to skool,so if people want to study abroad and utilize the skools for them its nt becos something is biting them in nigeria.it cud be for adventure/exploring or as davidlan has jst stated above. [s]who has time to go nd look for one lil spoilt little girl to kidnapp.[/s] |

a good turn deserves another. they say. so a good question deserves a good answer, @busy girl, mosquitoes, bees, and all that. to recall, my first visit to the US was something else. i was in Lake Charles for 48 hrs and i cant count the numbers of mosquitoe (bigger than used too) bite and to worsen the case, got a hive of bees on the ship which wasn't a very good experience either, got stinged by one. may be i was not so lucky or if i had stayed in 9ja it would not have happened. |

Talking of being rude, I really agree with your parents taking you back home. . .Here they teach education and forget about respect. . Imagine, my 6years old cousin was going to school one morning, when they were leaving, the door was opened, so her mum told her to go and shut the door and she replied, Sorry, I can't. . . I was irritated. That was rude. . . I believe you will learn more about respect and manners in Nigeria. |

dude you will have fun in nigeria the people are nice (this is coming from a naija american, been there once at 2 years old and another time at 16) dont listen to the negative things some ppl r saying here about there own country and the kidnappers will not kidnap you they only that to oil workers mostly white people for stealing the money and damaging the environment especially around warri but im from ahoda and everybody from that area is nice in my opinion try going to benin city, calabar, and omoku and eat at mr. biggs hope you have fun cha cha |

chiegemba: Still reading my mind ![]() If i can remember the girl's post correctly, she wrote down her fears, asked for help, advice and guidance and then asked if someone else have been in her shoes. What does she get?? Mouth-slaughter ![]() What's wrong in saying, what you heard about your country and mine isn't all true, give her a reason to look forward to her experience there. No matter how lovely weknow it is, she hasn't been there. If living abroad has made her rude and non-challant, then so be it. Isn't that why she's being taken doen to Nigeria to learn some?? Her parents already told her that, so why can't we tell her something she doesn't know already?? I have been in her shoes, i was dragged down to naija at the age of 5, and even so young as i was it wasn't easy at all ![]() ![]() But then i had to go, see and conquer to find that out. Lets give her a chance to do the same. It's never been a crime to be scared or is it?? 1 Like |
Re: I'm Scared Of Going To Nigeria by finemocha(f): 4:11pm On Apr 29, 2007 |
apparently cuteass is the only one here to still stick with the topic. and no, going to starbucks is not a sign of opulence, its a sign of choice. something that is scarce in nigeria, i like choice but u dont get it, whenever something new opens in abuja every body rushes there. u get sick of seeing the same old people thats all, whether in nicon or the chinese restaurants or the boutiques it just gets old. so we all wait for the next new thing to hit. look i know nigeria still has a long way to go. im not saying that its a bad place but there are luxuries i have here that are hard to come by in nigeria. if the place was soo great people would go home and stay there. not graduate with degrees and be made to feel less than human because they cant get jobs, regardless of how intelligent they are. and u guys know that is a fact. of course everyone knows Uk and US are not heaven. But we are here, and are willing to deal with the negatives as well as the positives. rather than stay in naija nad deal wiht their negatives as well as their positives. OH and for all of us who "bad- mouth nigeria" if u have a problem wiht that i would advice u to hit ur head against the wall. Th is is how we feel aint gonna stop. And the white men in port-harcourt, there is something going on that is bigger than we see. nigeria is a gold mine for oil. if not do u think they would be there. no beautiful beaches to attract them, or ridiciulous diamond stores, no snorkeling or deep see diving, heck no rain forest. puuuhlease choogntin when u go home just have fun ok. and no offense but going to nigeria at this age is not giong to change ur attitude. your rudeness. u have passed the impressionable age. and once u go back to america u will be surrounded with the same old rude freinds anyway. To be polite has to be taught at home, not when the child is a teenageer u send them to boarding school so that it can be some other person's problem. I have a lot of friends who went ot nigeria for boarding school. heck they are still freaking rude, only now they know how to smoke garri. |

finemocha: That was funny (now i understand why my parents dragged me there at the age of 5 ![]() ![]() ![]() In as much as i believe in the saying "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he'll not depart from it" and i have some friends too that have gone and come back the same lets not forget the few that have changed some deal, even though i'm disciplined, respectful and all that (things i apparently learnt in naija) I came back to Norway at the age of 15+ but there are still some attitudes from naija that i've switched with some here What i'm trying to say is that it might not be too late, atimes its all about choices, we can chosse to drop the bad attitudes and go for the better ones though we aren't used to them. Her parents might have been a bit late, but better late than never, right?? ![]() |

I cant believe how rude some people are being to this girl ![]() is it because of her skin colour tht u feel that she may think shes better than u? so no1 can critise nigeria nemore? This girl is scared coz she hasnt been to naija in long time. Im sure most of u guys who came abroad when u was older was scared. Probably thinking if people will feel racist towards u? or will ur accent make u at a disadvantage? @choongtin dont mind them I aint gonna lie, yes there is kidnapping. And dont worry girl, i hate insects aswell. But, theres kidnapping everywhere. and you get used to the insects. You going there is probably gonna change ur life, ur outlook on things will be soo different, and ull definately enjoy it. I never went to skool in naija, but i love going back home. ppl like spoilt and davidylan, u guys need to relax. She never meant to offend ne1. She came on here asking for what nigeria is really like, and people like you give her insults. Na Wa, is that supposed to make her feel better about going to nigeria. If you aint got nothing nice to say, dont say nethin at all. ![]() @Cute-ass i agree with everything ur saying, why cant most ppl be like u ![]() ![]() ![]() 1 Like |

Only thing I can hope for you is that you dont go to boarding school. That's pretty much it. The horrors know no bounds. as for everything else, you'll get over it and adapt. Although AGAIN I dont know what took your parents so long. The whole "sending away to become a better person" usually works for younger children. Nigeria and the way of life is changing rapidly so i wouldnt be surprised if you came back worse. |

blue-sky: sweetie read my posts again. i dont care about her skin color. was just trying to let her know that there isnt enough crime in nigeria to compare with what occurs in america and europe! i'm not kidding. i live in california and i feel safer in nigeria when i visit. she shouldnt believe everything she hears. she wasnt just asking, she already sounded like she actually believed all the bull. |
Re: I'm Scared Of Going To Nigeria by TheOne2(m): 10:45pm On Apr 29, 2007 |
@choongtin don't worry, you'll be fine in Nigeria. Just leave all your prejudices behind in the UK and try to think with some empathy and you'll have a great time. Don't go with the mind of comparing evryhting in Nigeria to those in the UK unless your parents are very wealthy and as such you can afford anyhting you want. Truth is, there's nothing in the UK you can't have in Nigeria, it might just cost some more. It's best though to adapt to the country and the people. To the likes of finemocha: I really don't know where to start with you. Look, I've tasted both sides and now know the differences. Before I came into the UK for my M.Sc last October, I used to think the place was all that. Right now, my eye don clear. I can't wait for September to run back to Nigeria. The place no just make am at all. Where did you hear that intelligent people don't get jobs? You've been listening to too many stories my dear. I'm tired of trying to make this clarification on nairaland. For me, for standard of living, the money I have in my pocket at the end of the month, the investments I can make with my money, the nice houses I can buy outright in 5 years and not 25 years etc makes Nigeria the place of choice. I think a lot of you guys abroad still look at Nigeria with 1990's eyes. My dear, I have a lot of friends who were average in the university who are very gainfully employed. And let me say they didn't have any connections before you start spitting that. In fact, I have a hard time trying to think of ONE out of my numerous friends in the university who is not doing very well. The guys that you visit their sites regularly (Deolu Akinyemi, Dipo Tepede, Emma Oluwatosin etc) were and are still my good friends and and these were intelligent guys you can't say they are not doing well for themselves. And you said no beaches!! What about Lekki, Alpha, Eleko, Bar beach, Badagry beach and a lot of smaller private beaches? Where are the good beaches in this UK sef? Seems it's a long time since you've been in Lagos for you to say that there's no variety in shopping. Dear, naija people are moving forward faster than you think. It's just a pity that the govt is not moving as fast as the people. Pls don't come for NYSC o, with your attitude you'll only be miserable and make others around you miserable too. There are enough people who can do it in Nigeria ok? Last word: I think it will be better for you if you let go of your prejudices about Nigeria because no matter what you say, it's obvious from your postings that you're prejudiced. |

Lol I know you are all trying to defend Nigeria to a FELLOW Nigerian, as you see it doesnt make sense but please enough with the lies jare The people that are supposedl;y gainfully employed, most of them are NOT working where they should be. so many engineers working in banks. Ridiculous. |
Re: I'm Scared Of Going To Nigeria by Nobody: 10:48pm On Apr 29, 2007 |
blue-sky: Maybe we too need to be bundled back to Nigeria to learn some courtesy eh? ![]() blue-sky: Skin color has nothing to do with this. I didnt even know if she was pink or purple until much much later. I doesnt cross my mind that she may think she's better than me, i know she isnt! When you criticise Nigeria, dont mention things like insects, sushi, mosquitoes and crime as reasons for disliking Nigeria! I still saw a black ant in my pad last night and last ii checked even some Americans dont like sushi! blue-sky: I'm not sitting on pins and needles so i guess i'm pretty well relaxed. There is a difference between being blunt and "giving insults". blue-sky: Because if we all wrote long emotional epistles like dear old mummy, nairaland would be the most boring place on earth. |

@red_lips Lol I know you are all trying to defend Nigeria to a FELLOW Nigerian, as you see it doesnt make sense but please enough with the lies jare That was an ignorant post. If you think what I wrote are lies, then I'll leave you to your ignorance. I know some of you just can't imagine what I wrote is possible and think you're in heaven wherever you are but my dear, there are a lot of ordinary folks who live better lives than you here in Nigeria. I'm not trying to sell Nigeria to anyone, I only believe it is important to correct ignorant folks like you. The people that are supposedl;y gainfully employed, most of them are NOT working where they should be. so many engineers working in banks. RidiculousWhere is it stated that one must do work related to what one studied in school? How many people are actually well informed about what they'll enjoy doing before they get into school? So they shld sacrifice their satisfaction for wanting to ensure they do work related to what they studied? Let me tell you, I studied engineering in school and I know that not up to 10 of my coursemates work in banks. On the other hand, more than 20 work in oil companies. So you see, your postulation is wrong. If you weren't good enough to measure up to others in Nigeria, don't think everybody is like that. |
Re: I'm Scared Of Going To Nigeria by RedLips3(f): 11:19pm On Apr 29, 2007 |
Did I say I was living in heaven? In case I did please show me. Better don't place your assumptions on me. I'm not fine_mocha so you better know what you are talking about. My uncle, read Chemical Engineering in Ife, since Ife being the useless stupid school that it is known for it';s constant strikes, he was there for 7 and a half years, he now works in a bank. who studies all that for so much time to work in a damn bank? and the people who read garbage take all these jobs from those who actually read something good. You have people who studied Communication working in Oil Companies while those who spent more than 5 years slavcng away are in lower positions, it's not fair Not saying it happens to everyone but it happens and I'm not going to be an idiot and deny that all in the name of trying to make us look good. I love Nigeria and unless I tell a person they never really know that i've spent 16 years in The States and only 7 in Nigeria but Nigeria will always be the country I mention but like i said, i don't ignore the problems. Btw How does a chemist end up being president? Wouldnt surprise me if the dude never took a poli sci class in his life. ![]() Well at least we made progress from farmer to someone who actually has a degree even if it's not in what it should be, . . |

I'll be nutts to point an accusing finger on her when i know i've been in her shoes and can confess life wasn't anything to write home about at the beginning . . but its all good sha!! Its always an adventure to be told, mine eneded well. @red_lips I thought I was having an exchange with someone who is worth my time but based on that last post, I'm sorry to say, I doubt it. It's so sad that even after having left Nigeria, you can still be so ignorant to make that post. If you don't know, you exposed yourself with it and a lot of people will now know what you actually carry upstairs. |
